Sailing Life Warriors Doing life differently, while sailing the world

We had the opportunity to hike with several boats in our anchorage up to a waterfall. We didn’t realize we would be able to swim in the water so we didn’t wear our suits. That didn’t stop this crew. We jumped right in and took advantage of the refreshing, cool water of this secluded, hidden gem. We saw fresh water eels and shrimp swimming also. Then we continued the hike up to Manfred, the chocolate maker’s, house. He let us sample his chocolate and then select from about 12 varietals to purchase. 😋 Then he encouraged us to pick from the fruit in his yard. We loaded up on star fruit, passion fruit, lime, and pamplemousse. What a treat!!! We continued to forage from the trees along the path as we made our way back down to the boats. We learned so many tips and tricks from the kids from other boats since it has become such a way of life for them over the years.

It was time to leave one anchorage and head to the next. Same island…different view. Each place is unique in its own way. We look forward to heading out tomorrow to explore all that this hidden little gem has to offer (we hear there may be a chocolate maker here!).

First there was one... and than another... and by the end of the day, there were 32 children (1.5% of the islands 2100 people) from the island of Ua Pou, Marquesas. It's days like this we've dreamed about when thinking about sailing. Interacting with the local community and sharing the love. It was such a great day seeing them have so much impromptu fun on the boat. They were such sweet, polite kids, just having fun the way kids should. Watch until the end! And thanks to Sailing Paradise Falls and SVChinook (Carl D'Amato and 8Minutes2Live) for taking part in the fun!

Although today, May 18th, will always be bittersweet for us, we do not choose to wallow in sadness. Life is beautiful and we have so much for which to be grateful. Like most events in life, it’s hard to believe it’s been 2 years since the boat fire AND it feels like yesterday all at the same time. While we are still crushed today not to have the girls on the boat with us, we will always be grateful for everyone who rallied around us in person and from afar (physically, financially, etc). We couldn’t have done it without our collective tribe. Our hearts were touched and our lives changed by the graciousness of others. We celebrate our blessings today and the lives of our sweet girls who had just turned 7 years old 5 days before the fire. We are thankful for the amazing years we were fortunate enough to love them.

Sunsets continue to surprise us. The color of the sunset the other night over Hiva Oa was incredible. Purples and violets like we've never seen before all because of a clear upper atmosphere and the light reflecting off the lower layer of clouds. Homeschool science class is now over, 😆.

Grocery shopping looks a little different each place that we visit. This trip included several firsts. It started with us bumming a ride with a neighbor boat since our dinghy is out of commission at the moment. It was a 15 minute ride to a bay where there was a small market, church, food truck, and a couple other small cafes. You can’t just walk the aisles (all 4 of them) of the market hoping to find everything on your list. You must order some things (eggs, tomatoes) and come back 4 hours later to pick up. While we waited, we grabbed breakfast sandwiches and instant coffee at the food truck. We also met some local residents who sold us fruit from their yard (mangos, bananas, and pamplamousse). While we ate our breakfast, the nice couple went home to gather the fruit and then they drove it to the dock so we didn’t have to schlepp it through town. I didn’t realize they would bring the bananas on the vine with leaves and all. It was such a unique experience and it’s the adventure we look forward to at each stop.

Happy Mothers Day from Sailing Life Warrior! Beth is absolutely the life jacket to our insanity here on Warrior. Thank you to our moms and all the moms out there either living the adventure or letting their kids lead lives of adventure even though it's hard to let them go! GALAPAGOS TO MARQUESAS
DAY 21 (Friday, May 3, 2024) - 9pm
9°51.800’S 138°20.700’W
60nm to go (double digits!)
We had to drop the sail pretty early this morning as we had zero wind and it was causing the sail to flop around like crazy. We were going a whopping 3 knots. Mind numbing!!! We hated to do it on our last day but it wasn’t helping us make progress anyway. We’ve been motoring all day which has helped fill the batteries as well as keep us moving forward.
Fun fact: The Marquesas Archipelago is one of the most remote island groups in the world. These distant volcanic islands are located farther away from a continental landmass than any other island in existence. They are so isolated they even have their own time zone.
Animals spotted - Started the day off with a pair of birds flying by right as I looked out the kitchen window. Not sure what they were but they were beautiful! Spotted several others periodically throughout the day. I’m trying to have an appreciation for the bird life…when all I really want to see is a whale!!!!! I wanted to capture spectacular pictures and videos to share with all of you so you could appreciate it also. Doesn’t look like it’s happening this time but I’ll be diligently waiting and watching. I’m not giving up!! They’re out here somewhere!!!
General mood/outlook on board - We are almost giddy with excitement (D says he’s not giddy 🤣). We missed a daylight arrival tonight by a few hours so this forced slower pace will allow us to make a daybreak entrance tomorrow. We’ll need to be diligent on night watches since there will be more traffic (and land) than we’ve seen the entire trip. Everyone keeps saying we’ll smell the island before we see it. Supposedly it smells like dirt and trees. All we can smell is salt air and ocean. Not sure we even remember what land smells like. 😆

GALAPAGOS TO MARQUESAS
DAY 18 (Tuesday, April 30, 2024) - 9pm
8°53.546’S 131°25.200’W
458 nm to go
We had a lot of goals upon embarking on this journey. Although we’re each chipping away at them, we haven’t made nearly the progress we originally thought. You’d think with all this “down time” we could each read a book a day, workout 2 hours/day, create culinary masterpieces daily, learn a language or two, teach ourselves a new instrument, etc. but somehow the hours amazingly fill up with boat related projects or tasks.
Animals spotted - 1 bird
General mood/outlook on board - The crew is still enjoying the rhythm of the days at sea. We thought for sure by now we’d be going stir crazy but it’s been a pleasant surprise how well we’ve adapted. We can’t believe we’ll be on land in

GALAPAGOS TO MARQUESAS
DAY 17 (Monday, April 29, 2024)- 10pm
8°31.430’S 128°47.400’W
616nm to go
Today was a spring cleaning day. This is the smallest space we’ve ever lived in but it gets dustier/dirtier faster than any other place we’ve occupied. I don’t know what it is?!?! It was time to tackle the windows, cabinets, drawers, and floors. Also we needed to check the rigging which requires walking around the entire boat and eyeballing it for rust, wear, and breaking or missing parts. Basically trying to catch the point of failure before it fails.
Animals spotted - We have a small gecko on board! We have no clue how or where he boarded the boat. In Galapagos, we weren’t allowed to utilize our dinghy so we had to call water taxis. They would only pull up to the boat long enough for us to quickly hop on/off. The last time we were at a dock was Panama. That means he’s likely been on board about 6 weeks. He came out briefly during the storm yesterday but quickly ran away and hid. Poor lil guy. He has rain water to drink but I’m not sure what he’s eating.
General mood/outlook on board - We were commenting today that this has gone surprisingly faster than we anticipated. We’ve all enjoyed our time on this passage. The moon has been so bright that it has drowned out the stars but tonight the sky was magnificent.

GALAPAGOS TO MARQUESAS
DAY 11 (Tuesday, April 23, 2024) - 10pm
06°50.040’S 112°23.175’W
1605nm to go
We are past the squalls as of 6ish hours ago. The seas were all confused (yes that’s what they call it) today. The waves were coming from different directions and the timing was inconsistent which made for a rough ride. It can be hard on the sails sometimes because they don’t stay continuously filled with air. They make a lot of noise as they luff (flop around) as we go down the back side of the waves. We end up putting the sails up and down a lot.
Fun Fact(s)- (1) We are closer to the humans on the International Space Station than anyone else on the planet right now (with the exception of a few boats that are within a couple hundred miles of us). (2) We changed our clocks back an hour today. By the time we arrive in the Marquesas, we will have changed time zones 3 times and will be a total of 3.5 hours behind our starting time (MST).
Animals spotted - a few birds in the distance was it today. Our b***y hitchhiker didn’t come back tonight. We are (at least one of us is) actually sad. It was nice having him around.
General mood/outlook onboard - this crew is ecstatic since tomorrow we be the half way point of this journey!!

GALAPAGOS TO MARQUESAS
DAY 4 (Tuesday, April 16, 2024) - 10pm
5°6.655’S 96°28.380’W
2568nm to go
2:30am - had to lower sails due to inconsistent wind and choppy waves; no real wind all day; attempted to sail multiple times but had to turn on motor shortly after each attempt. 9pm - finally decided to turn off engines and stop chasing the wind. We’ll catch it eventually.
Animals spotted (slow day) - we found 3 squid and 1 flying fish on deck this morning (RIP)
General mood/outlook onboard - frustrated with lack of wind but hopeful for better results soon. Tomorrow is a new day!!!

For those interested in following our Pacific travels in real-time, click below. Wondering why we're heading south instead of directly west? Because we need wind. We don't have enough fuel to make it to the Marquesas, so we're using it to find wind.

Check out Warrior's tracking page.
