It’s ok, not to be ok”
A simple statement that has SO much impact.

Mental health is just as important as physical health and sometimes we need to remind ourselves of that!

On the latest episode, Bill Benedict speaks about the importance of opening up if you feel like you are struggling. Him and his wife Anne are spreading this message to resume the battle their son, Matthew Benedict sadly went though❤️

The latest episode of the CTE TALK Podcast was a tough one.
When people think of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's/Dementia, the association is normally to those over the age of 60+. However, with CTE this is just NOT the case.

Bill Benedict, joined us to talk about how his son, Matthew Benedict ended his life at just 26 years old. From the outside, Matthew looked like he had it all; Thriving in his sporting endeavors, in the midst of his law degree, a loving family, and a new relationship.. but sadly the effects of his concussions led him to an extremely vulnerable position. Sadly, this is not uncommon for those suffering from post-concussive syndrome or suspected CTE. We need to realise how VITAL it is to protect our brains from a young age. It is through incredible individuals like Bill, and his wife, Anne sharing his son's legacy that we get to raise awareness and educate others on the realities of CTE.

Episode 13 is now live!!

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS REFERENCES TO SU***DE. IF YOU FIND THIS TRIGGERING, PLEASE REFER TO ANOTHER EPISODE TO LISTEN TO. LINKS CAN BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE WWW.CTETALK.COM IF YOU NEED TO REACH OUT FOR SUPPORT.

Today we are joined by Bill Benedict who shares the story of his 26-year-old son Matthew. On July 1, 2019, Matthew died by su***de at age 26. His parents Anne and Bill share his story today to raise awareness of the seriousness of the symptoms of concussion, erase the stigma surrounding those who suffer from mental health issues, and help other student-athletes struggling with Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) so they understand they are not alone.

We hope you enjoy the episode!

Here’s the research our host Georgia has undertaken for her PhD project✍🏼

The first two studies have concluded the experiences CTE caregivers go through during and after their roles. This has included looking at spouses and those with differing relationships to the care recipient (parents, siblings, and children). From this Georgia has determined the KEY factors associated with caregiver burden.

Her third study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a supporting caregiver resource, in the hope to eliminate the elements of burden determined in the first two studies. If you would like to be a part of this, please each out on [email protected] 👍🏼

As always, thank you for all the incredible individuals who have taken part in these studies. I couldn’t do them without you all!

Let me know if you would like me to make a video with the study outcomes📑

I hope all CTE caregivers, including previous, current, and future will benefit from this work in some way.

The family of Irv Cross is announcing his stage 4 (of 4) diagnosis today, exactly two years after he passed away. The former star went on to become a sportscasting pioneer. He was the first Black person to work full-time as a sports analyst on national television and in 2009, the first Black person to win the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Award.

Irv’s wife Liz says the disease triggered depression, mood swings, paranoia & severe memory loss. For the last few years of his life, he did not want to be around people and struggled with his balance and had delusions.

Irv was an advocate for our cause, pledging to donate his brain to CLF in 2018, and promoting our flag football under 14 program.

Today we remember Irv’s amazing life and thank his family for sharing his diagnosis publicly to help others.

Hi Everyone,

Today we are joined by Mindi Blanchard who shares the story of her husband, and former NFL player Carey Blancard. Carey was a kicker who played eight years for five teams: the New York Jets for his first two years, the Indianapolis Colts after taking 1994 off, the Washington Redskins in 1998, the New York Giants in 1999, and the Arizona Cardinals in his final season.

Mindi talks about how CTE made him into a man, she and their three children didn't recognize.

Family members and caregivers need to remember to take time for themselves too.

Looking after someone with CTE can be one of the hardest roles, so it’s vital that you prioritize yourself too❤️

I know that can be easier said than done, but start small and build it up. Whether that’s doing a face mask before bed, going out to your favourite restaurant, or meeting a friend for a coffee… you NEED an outlet!

Looking after yourself will help to take care of your loved one🥰
