Black designers we want to see for the 2024 MET gala

With the excitement of who will properly execute the 2024 Met gala theme Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, I decided to tap into the conversation of black designers garments I will hope to see on the red carpet in wearable art. Black designers are usually left out of the dialogue of accessing rare historical garments to wow the audience; however, there is another perfect time for a celebrity to wear an Anne Lowe original dress, highlighting an unfamiliar part of American fashion and Lowe’s exquisite eye for detail through her hand-seen floral appliqués.

Here are my top five designers and collections that should make a presence at this year’s fashion Olympics!

Imane Ayissi 2024
Anne Lowe 1950s
Kevan hall spring 2022
Christopher John Rogers, Floral tulip evening gown
Chuks Collins 2024

Highlights from the In the Legacy of Ann Lowe Contemporary American Fashion symposium curated by Elizabeth Way exhibition at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.

I received a scholarship to mingle and gather with many like-minded professionals in original fashion history conversation and view the original works of American black designer Ann Lowe. The knowledge and understanding of the skill set of her craftsmanship is still mindblowing and difficult to comprehend.
Here are some key points and take aways I jotted down.

She was married at the age of 12.

Ann would wear a maid outfit to her client's client's wedding ceremony due to racial politics and discrimination against black people.

The 1950s was the most stable time of her career.

Ann did not start to position herself as a designer until the 1960s.

Most of her network was through family connections by making gowns for multiple family members for one event.

Claude Payne- specialist of dressy separates

Throughout my journey of learning about Black designers, I have been blessed to meet fashion professionals and historians with direct experiences with purchasing and working with influential designers who n black culture, who stories are often overlooked or worst unappreciated in history. I see this a docu-series to my life and career as an inspiring fashion historian. During my recent travel to Delaware, I connected with someone who archived original Claude Payne garments that she purchased from a Harlem black-owned back in the 1980s and was unaware if anyone was familiar with his presence in fashion prior to his death.

Claude Payne received a bachelors degree from Wayne State university in Detroit, design speciality was dressy separates. He was also a recipient of the Harvey Bristol Cream Tribute to the black designers in 1981. “ Our first customer was Bloomingdale’s. Some firms wait years to get in there”, says Claude during with is 1975 interview with fashion writer Marji Kunz. Claude received a window display with Henry Benedel and sold merchandise through Macy’s, Franklin Simon, and Bergdorf Goodman.

“upscale urban” - publicist Monae Farr on Jajuan Micheal

The Detroit native brand, Jajuan Michael, was describe as refreshing and distinctive than other urban designers in the 2000s. According the Prweb, each of the garments had a special touch that stood out from other companies at that time with couture fitting and superior styling. His ladies collection that was stock listed in the US, London, and Japan to appeal to women that was attracted to a sexy and classy style. Signature elements from there design style, included patchwork, denim, couture like dresses with the matching bag and shoes. There ads could be found various publications like Honey,XXL, and Rolling Out magazine to promote the clothing line in the saturated market of “urban” designers. The brand was very rare to be seen on the general public, but many of there clients was Detroit rappers like Eminem and Ob trice to name a few that increased brand awareness.

The most recent update the brand, was a scheduled release of a upscale handbag collection in 2004. We look forward to find more information of this brand and history!

“ The prince of pieces” -Fashion Institute of Technology on XULY.Bët

The conscious designer, Xuly Bet, intergrade signature elements that reinforces his commitment to satiability, the color red, and used of recycled goods. In our archive, we preserved a pair of beautiful made heels , that showcase three identifiable elements from the brand.

1)Styrofoam soles made out of recycled items

2)Detailed hardware for satiability.

3)Maroon red which Xuly also included red to his designs to represent transformation

Recycling and the use of second-hand clothes are common practices across African countries. Either it is clothing imported from North America and Europe or bottles, tires and computers, etc., those “wastes” are used as raw materials to create something new. As Kouyate said “ “it’s an African, third world nations’ philosophy. To use things up. You don’t waste anything but create new from old”.(quoted: www.futurelearn.com)

I got an opportunity to view Patrick Kelly iconic designs and memorabilia collections at the museum. I was overwhelmed by Patrick way of reinforcing how we should turn negative to positives, and to see the joy in life regardless of circumstances through his satirical designs inspired by black face. This exhibit was truly “ Mississippi in Paris” and I enjoyed every moment of it!
Thank you to my friends at the Peabody for the invite💕
