Day in the life of a system administrator

An average day in the life of a system administrator typically involves balancing a number of routine maintenance tasks with diagnosing problems reported by network users. The system administrator performs such tasks as updating systems, applications, and maintaining databases on a regular basis. At the same time, the system administrator will respond to

emails or calls from network users who are experiencing problems such as accessing the Internet or the database. The system administrator will often visit the network user’s workstation to diagnose the problem and determine if the cause is an issue with the database, an application or the network. When new hires join the organization, the system administrator is responsible for assigning network and database privileges to them and setting up their login information. During a typical day, systems administrators might also purchase new hardware or software for the organization and spend some time conferring with the vendors if they encounter any problems during installation. If any problems occur with the backups, the system administrator will often find out about it the next day through incoming calls from network users who are unable to access the database.
