Like any skill set, VFX compositing is perishable. So, I decided to dust the cobwebs out of my brain over the weekend working on this shot. The stock video footage is from Pixabay; I motion-tracked it in Blender to get a 3D camera solve (thus enabling me to have the 3D model and its associated effects stay locked in a given spot in XYZ space). The energy VFX and music are from Triune Digital's Infinity and Cinematic Action Scores packs, respectively; the background SFX is from Mixkit. I composited it all together in HitFilm.

I made this still image last August, a composite shot with a lot of different effects at play. I've decided to take another crack at the scene, making an animated version a few seconds long (which means setting my computer to render out the ocean overnight, at a very minimum, since modeling the ocean waves takes about a minute for each frame).

It was a dark and stormy sea....

I am at heart a storyteller, and I like to make my renders tell stories. Who are these two figures in the foreground, what are the vine-covered stone ruins they're standing in? What happened to the vast hulk of a crashed starship a couple miles out to sea on an alien world? Who, or what, left a light on in the shipwreck? Is it a hopeful circumstance ("someone survived!") or an ominous one ("something's alive out there!")? In this case, I leave the answers to the viewer.

Last stream, I took a break from working on my usual scifi projects to try making a fantasy interior environment, nominally the private chambers of High Sorcerer Baradun from Viva La Dirt League's EpicNPCMan series. It's still a work in progress, but I'm pleased with how much I was able to accomplish in only about three hours. It would be a dream-come-true to work with Viva on VFX or digital set extension, but if I want to do that I need to be able to work in the context of the fantasy genre. Regardless of whether that ever ends up happening, it's good practice and an excuse to broaden by skill base.

Liara exploring Ilos. I'm particularly proud of this one, because other than the models for Liara herself and her omnitool, the rest was made from scratch based on reference images from Mass Effect 1. Rendered with cycles in Blender 3.0, composited in HitFilm.

I've been working on building a more claustrophobic spaceship corridor, more in line with modern naval vessels and real-world space stations. Remember, it's expensive to get materials into space, so the engineers designing spacecraft tend to try and waste as little volume as possible.
