From Murder Metal Mayhem

Morta Skuld – “Creation Undone” Album Review

This new album from the veteran death metal maniacs from Milwaukee, is like a runaway freight train going off the tracks! I don’t mean that in a negative way, these guys bring it and then some with their brand-new “Creation Undone” album. Morta Skuld have been in the trenches since 1990, sharing the stage with legends like Slayer, Death (Official), Obituary and more. They’re now on Peaceville Records from the UK with their 7th slab-of-sickness, packed full with ten songs.

This is one of the heaviest albums I’ve heard in a while. I love the production, as it captures the rawness of metal, but keeps the focus tight, yet allows the individual instruments to breathe and provide lots of texture in the sound. There’s a lot to unpack when you hear this release and I had it cranked in my car stereo. I’ve listened to it front to back at least 4-5 times at the time of this review.

The guitar tone between original guitarist, Dave Gregor, and Scott Willecke is just vicious! It’s an impenetrable wall of crunch that is unwavering. Well-placed solos add to the audio assault and are fitting for the genre. Dave Gregor also provides the vocals in the band with a killer low growl that is the icing on this death metal delicacy. The bass playing from John Hill is tight and hangs well with the riffage going on, while the drumming from Eric House really delivers in these songs. Eric is also with a band I’m familiar with in Human Artifacts and formerly with one we all know – Jungle Rot. His playing is unbelievable from start to finish on this release, with some impressive double bass work and well-timed blast beats.

I really loved the entire album, I would have to say my standouts would have to be the opening track, “We Rise We Fall”, as well as “Soul Piercing Sorrow” and “Self-Destructive Emotions”. But the whole thing just slays!

If you like your death metal punishing from beginning to end, then I suggest you get yourself a copy of “Creation Undone” or this runaway freight train may just hop off the tracks and run your worthless ass down! Horns high from me on this one!

From the Murder Metal Mayhem podcast

Surgical Strike “24/7 Hate” Review

I got my hands on an advance copy of this album from Germany’s Surgical Strike for review. I have liked this band for a few years now and interviewed their bassist, Florian, in 2021. I was anxious to check out their new album “24/7 Hate” that will be released on March 1, 2024.

I had it cranking while driving my car, my favorite place to hear new music. It was slamming and I’m surprised I didn’t wreck with how hard these guys bring it on this crushing release! It’s everything a fan of thrash metal would want – plenty of riffage to induce one hell of a savage mosh pit. I was very impressed with the production of the 11-song offering. Their songwriting has advanced from the last release as they continue to grow. Their playing got tighter. It’s a major step up from their great 2020 album, “Part Of A Sick World”. These guys have honed their sound to a razor-sharp blade, slicing the necks of all who don’t agree this band kills it! Posers be damned!

The drumming from Joshua Jo is what jumps out at first. His drum kit sounds amazing, and he destroys it one song after another. His double bass work is impressive. Florian Seybecke really pops in the mix with a great bass tone that delivers and provides the mortar to build the foundation on which this band stands upon. The guitar duo of Marcelo Vasquez Rocha and Frank Ruhnke is one of the most improved things I hear on this release. Their bludgeoning crunch is a righteous offering to the thrash metal gods, while the melodies and lead solo work from Frank scorches with a frenzied, yet controlled ex*****on. It rounds out the instrumental side of the band and creates a crushing wall of sound!

The vocals by Jens “Stopsel” Albert are another area of the band that has matured and improved beyond the 2020 album to put these guys on another level. I love his style, and it reminds me of some of the US thrash metal I grew up on. These guys haven’t forgotten their German roots, because I hear glimpses of the mighty , Destruction, and a touch of S***m. I love the fact you can hear his German accent, which reminds me of the mighty Angelripper, UDO, or Mille Petrozza. The band throws in plenty of great group vocals that makes the listener want to scream out with them.

I really loved the entire album, but I would say my standout tracks are “Fear Monger” and “Discover the Evil”. Get yourself a copy of “24/7 Hate” if you like your thrash metal loud, in your face, and smashing your skull into 666 pieces! Horns up from me on this one!
