Newly elected Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Dusty Springfield died of breast cancer on March 2, 1999 at her Henley-on-Thames home, just west of London. She was due to accept an honor from the queen of England on the day she passed away. Dusty was fifty-nine. Born Mary O'Brien in London, the blue-eyed soul singer started out as a member of the folk trio, The Springfields. "I Only Want To Be With You" ( #12) was her first solo hit on Philips early in 1964. She had a wonderful career....it's sad that it was cut short. ♥😢

Re-upped & tweaked, Dusty's first hit from 1963, with my remastering of the stereo mix and special video tribute. I hope you enjoy it! also, "Dusty Day" in...

Roger Daltrey was born in London on March 1, 1944. Not only was he the lead singer of "The Who", he also appeared in several motion pictures...the most notable being "Tommy." It was a bit of a stretch having Ann-Margret play the role of his mother, as she is only THREE years older than Daltrey in real life!

HAPPY "21st" BIRTHDAY to Gretchen Christopher of The Fleetwoods! Our friend was born on "leap day" February 29, 1940 so she "officially" only gets to celebrate once every four years! Marty Natchez and I had the opportunity to interview Gretchen on my WFNT radio show "Song Encyclopedia" in 2008, just before she celebrated her 17th. We talked about how she formed the group with Barbara Ellis while the two were still seniors at Olympia High School in Washington. They soon added Gary Troxel to the mix and they were on their way. "Come Softly To Me" was #1 for four weeks in the spring of 1959; "Mr. Blue" also went to #1 later that year and numerous hits followed. We also wish a belated Happy Birthday to Barbara who was born on February 20, 1940. -bill pearson

Brian Jones, original second guitarist for The Rolling Stones, was born on February 28, 1942. He organized the band in 1962 and played on all of their hits through 1969 when he left due to poor health. The clip which follows says that he was actually fired. Brian Jones died in his swimming pool twenty-six days after leaving the group. 🤔😮😢

Brian Jones formed The Rolling Stones but his career in the band would be cut short along with his life.

Frankie Lymon was only 13 years old when he skyrocketed to fame. Along with his group, The Teenagers, Frankie established the "Kiddie" lead sound that was copied by hundreds of artists of the era. Known for classics like "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" and "I Want You To Be My Girl," Lymon and company were the first American rock 'n' roll group to have a #1 hit in England. They were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Lymon died of a drug overdose at his grandmother's house on February 28, 1968. He was only twenty-five.

Columbia Records President Clive Davis signed Janis Joplin to an exclusive recording contract on February 26, 1968. She became one of the most successful and widely known rock performers of her era, she was noted for her powerful mezzo-soprano vocals, as well as her "electric" stage presence. Sadly, her star burned out way too soon as Janis Joplin died of a he**in overdose in 1970, at the age of 27, after releasing three albums (two with Big Brother and the Holding Company and one solo album). A second solo album, Pearl, was released in January 1971, just over three months after her death.

George Harrison, (born February 25, 1943, Liverpool, England—died November 29, 2001, Los Angeles, California), British musician, singer, and songwriter, who gained fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles, one of the most important and influential bands in the history of rock music. A good deal of confusion as to his real birthday was solved when a family birth record noted him as being born shortly before midnight around 11:50 P.M. on February 24th, 1943. He had believed his birthday was February 25th for his entire life...most rock historians are sticking with the 25th, and so will we:

Rupert Holmes was born as David Goldstein on February 24, 1947, in England, but was raised in Manhattan. He wrote the Broadway musical "Drood" and created the cable TV show "Remember WENN"...and, of course, gave us the million-seller, "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" late in the fall of 1979. His follow-up song "Him" was a #6 charter as well. Here's a 77th birthday toast to Rupert Holmes...CHEERS!🍾🥂🎂🥳😁😉

Decca Records felt that they had the answer to The Everly Brothers when the Kalin Twins roared out of the gates in the summer of 1958 with a Paul Evans penned tune called "When". It reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, but subsequent singles (with the exception of their follow-up "Forget Me Not" at #12) failed to make it into the coveted top 40. Songwriter Gerry Goffin was born on February 11, 1939. Writing initially with his then wife Carole King, he co-wrote many international pop hits of the early and mid-1960s, including the No.1 hits "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "Take Good Care of My Baby", "The Loco-Motion", and "Go Away Little Girl". It was later said of Goffin that his gift was "to find words that expressed what many young people were feeling but were unable to articulate." The Goffin/King relationship with the late Bobby Vee paid off big time as Vee cranked out hit after hit, including the double-sided hit "Run To Him" ( #2) b/w "Walkin' With My Angel" ( #53) late in 1961. During his career Goffin penned over 114 Billboard Hot 100 hits, including eight chart-toppers. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, with Carole King. Sadly, Bobby Vee died in October of 2016 without achieving his deserved RRHOF status. Gerry Goffin died in the summer of 2014 at the age of 75.

After composing the song "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" on February 10, 1973, Bobby Russell offered the tune to Cher, who turned it down. Russell then gave it to his then wife, Vicki Lawrence, who had the #1 hit and sold well over a million copies! The song was a hit all over again when covered on the country charts by Reba McEntire in 1992.

To dismiss Barry Mann as a "One-Hit-Wonder" with "Who Put The Bomp" ( #7) in the summer of '61 on ABC-Paramount would be a terrible injustice to one of pop music's most prolific songwriters. In a partnership with Cynthia Weil, they wrote "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "(You're My) Soul & Inspiration," "Kicks," "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place," "Hungry" and MANY others. Born Barry Iberman on February 9, 1939 in Brooklyn, he was part of "The Brill Building Sound" that produced so much of the great music that we grew up with!
