When our nervous system is regulated, we gain access to more creativity, clarity, and long-term thinking. These are all conditions that we desperately need at this time on the planet.
Unfortunately many leaders operate from a state of chronic stress and anxiety. They make reactive, fear-based decisions and create a state of urgency that is felt across the whole team. The executive function of our brain shuts down in this state... how can we function as executives without access to the part of our brain that makes us a reliable, strategic leader?
This is one reason I believe that self-healing and self-regulating our nervous systems as leaders is STRATEGIC. Even more than that, I see it as a self-responsibly required of us to be able to care for our people and steer the ship safely through ambiguity and uncertainty.
When someone's nervous system is dysregualted, they can't be trusted in the same way that someone with a regulated nervous system can be. Their behavior may even trigger unhealthy coping mechanisms (like addictions) within themselves and their employees. There is a connection between toxic work culture and unhealthy coping mechanisms that I don't think we're talking enough about.
As a leader, I am committed to creating a healthy culture that promotes well-being, and reduces the negative health outcomes caused by undue stress. And I'm committed to helping my clients do the same.
I do this because it's the right thing to do. AND there are insanely valuable benefits from leading in this way:
👉 Better information flow occurs with trust as a conduit
👉 Improved retention of talent
👉 Less healthcare costs
👉 Better customer service, because it's delivered by healthy, vibrant people
👉 Less resources wasted on reactive decisions
👉 Less distractions (work drama and trauma) and more unified clarity
👉 Greater ability to take take smart risks and learn effectively from "failure"
I could go on! And I do... in episode 4 of the (K)new Self podcast, where we explore cultivating an "inner culture" of trust and dignity.
