Curious about what we're working on this year? THE BLOCK is a mixed media film inspired by the work of Langston Hughes and Romare Bearden but told through the voices and brush strokes of women. It follows the story of one long-term resident who is fed up with the foolishness on her block.
Beautifully illustrated by @lonoguer. Music score by @gavin_templeton. Special thanks to all the folks who are sharing their stories and time with us. We appreciate your rhymes @zeinegamal and your lady's grace. #femalefilmmakerfriday #womenfilmmaker #animation #documentary

Take a peek at the upcoming Still I Rise film by grantee @jessobert. LOUVRI POU MWEN, which means "Open for Me" in Haitian Creole, is a short documentary that explores the intimate stories of two young women and their work to build peace within their at-conflict Port-au-Prince communities.
Over the past year that @jessobert has worked on this story, Haiti has gone through several upsets: the assassination of its president, an earthquake, and a rise in gang warfare that has resulted in thousands displaced in the capital, including one of the two young women filmed in this short. Their stories -- their lived traumas and their healing -- transformed as new setbacks cropped up.

In honor of World Poetry Day and Dr. Maya Angelou whose work and legacy are the inspiration behind our film series, we offer you the following words:
"You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.”

Hello! I'm Elizabeth Truong, a 17-year old Digital Media student at the Oakland School for the Arts. I love spicy foods and am always up to trying new dishes worldwide. What we have in the works this year: THE BLOCK is a mixed media film beautifully illustrated by one of our long-term Still I Rise Films grant recipients @lonoguer, with music composed by @gavin_templeton.
A Black homeowner in one of the most liberal cities in America describes the parody and strife on her block to a journalist in search of a good story.
"They used to call us 'undesirables.' Many of us live in the flats because of redlining. Today, the same little bungalows on the block are selling for more than a million."
We're thrilled to announce that THE MIRROR, an animated film by Still I Rise Films that features the work of artist @lonoguer and music composer @gavin_templeton and interviews by @yogirldelores, is a selection of the academy-award qualifying Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival.
