For Startups, Timing is Everything 🔥

General Magic Was an American Company. Back in 1995, they built the smartphone📱 . Yeah, I know! No one had ever seen anything like it before.

But unfortunately, its touch screen was inadequate, and its battery life was poor. 😭

Also, at the time, most people were not yet addicted to email📧.

When Apple launched the iPhone twelve years later, the timing couldn't have been more perfect.

Similarly, Google was not the first search engine, and Facebook was not the first social media platform - they were both recycled ideas that had finally found their moment.

Software Engineer vs Software Developer, is there a difference?

Not really.

I see people trying to draw lines in the sand.

At the end of the day these are just job titles. Some companies even call us Software Development Engineers.

At the end of the day we build software that makes the world go round.

Humans are natural storytellers. Yet one of the typical things designers ask me to help them do is tell better stories.

In portfolio presentations, interviews, and project updates to stakeholders, telling a compelling and robust story is what often enables us to make headway. Here's what I recommend designers do to uncover the stories they are trying to tell.

First, find a good friend or partner/spouse willing to give you an hour of their time. Ask them if you can talk about one of your projects and record the conversation. Schedule the time and meet them, then speak as you would with any other friend about the project. Let the other person interject with questions as you go.

The goal is to have a conversation with a friend in a casual way. Talk about the project however you want, but make it an honest conversation about the work and not a presentation where you try to remember every step or apply the story to a pre-fixed notion of what a project account should entail. Just talk.

After the conversation, stop the recording and thank the other person. Then listen back to the story and use it as your template for your presentation.

What you'll find is when talking with someone close, you naturally hone in on the details that make it so intriguing. You'll probably talk about the parts that excite you most or that were most challenging. You'll be able to talk about that one partner who frustrated you and how you worked through issues with them. Or you'll find yourself talking about a specific problem in the project that was crucial in shaping how you solved the problem.

In many cases, that story about you and your experience is what people want to hear—not the artificial story that follows a step-by-step outline of what you did that you *think* others want to hear.

A very delicious biology project. When you are biology major and plans to become Michelin chef. Younger generations became really creative in their handling of science topics.

The best companies I know are customer-obsessed.

Who are your customers *really*?
What do they want?
What do they like?
What do they do?
Where else are they shopping?
What other products are they buying and using on the regular?

Never stop asking these questions. Never stop speaking directly with your customers.

Times change (as we definitely saw since the start of the pandemic), and with shifts in culture come shifts in core interests. Staying relevant means continuing to have regular conversations with your customers.

Never stop having these conversations.

At the age of 23 she founded Tinder but after 2 years she was forced to leave the company because she was a victim of sexual harassment. At 25 she rises and founds Bumble, a company valued at 14 billion.

was born in 1989.

At 22, she met Sean Rad and started working with him and 3 other guys on Tinder.

It is Whitney who chose the name Tinder, which means "dry, flammable material". The name refers to the burst of a spark.

Tinder soon becomes a global hit.
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Meanwhile, Whitney is dating Justin Mateen, one of the Co-Founders.

When they break up, he begins to threaten her, control her, insult her: Whitney is forced to leave.

In 2014 she sued the company for sexual harassment and began receiving death and r**e threats on social media that caused her severe panic attacks, blocking her in the house.

Her reaction: sketching out a new business idea.

At the age of 25 she founded Bumble, a dating app where women make the first move.

In 2019 Bumble is the second most popular dating app in the USA.

A few weeks ago Bumble listed on the stock exchange: its valuation reached 14 billion.

Today Whitney is known as the youngest self-made woman in history to become a billionaire. Bumble

Prepare, prepare, prepare and then let go.
My one sentence advice for interviewing.
But prepare how?
📌 Research the company. What's their mission?
📌 Read the job description thoroughly. What are they looking for?
📌Find interview questions online and practice.
You can't control the outcome. You can do your best to finish the process being proud of yourself.

Excellent lecture at GDC on designing Escape Rooms and how it is a valuable teaching tools for aspiring designers of any kind. A lot can be learned from making one such as scaling task difficulty, user testing, onboarding users, thematic and mechanical system cohesion. A great benefit is also that because it is made physically, anyone can design one at whatever scale they want, even if its something as small as designing an experience for a few friends in your living room. https://lnkd.in/dYDHVwjb

In this 2021 Educators Summit session, Northeastern University’s Samuel Liberty shares how designing escape rooms can help students master essential game des...
