Breaking News! From 1859! The longest manned flight to that time launched from downtown St. Louis and crash-landed in New York state. The passengers nearly died. Their flight distance record survived until 1900, but the coming of the Civil War overshadowed their accomplishment and it largely has been lost in the history books. About us

Mississippi Valley Motor Company Magazine, motorcomag.com, covers an array of transportation modes, hobbies, political issues and industry across the region known as the Mississippi Valley, especially southern Illinois and much of Missouri. We report on subjects, past and present, that touch our lives on air, water, roads and rails.

Why the name? We needed a title that reflected regionalism, so "St. Louis" or the over-used "Gateway" would not be sufficient. A solution appeared while researching the early automobile industry -- advertisements for the "Mississippi Valley Motor Co.," formed in 1916 as the St. Louis-based regional distributor of Oakland cars. A previous firm, "Mississippi Valley Automobile Company," operated for few years after opening in St. Louis in 1902.
