"Then there becomes a tension in, for example, theater, when you have a more diverse array of storytellers but the people covering them are still mostly white and the people reviewing their work are still mostly white. The head critic of the New York Times, for example, is a white man and the head critics of most of the major New York outlets are also white, that means that they have the power to determine whether or not a show does well…

And so when you have white critics who have their own personal taste, biases, they will have things that they will not be able to understand, but they will chalk it up to the fault of the writer rather than realizing 'oh, there’s cultural references here that I don’t see because its outside of my realm of experience'"

"It was a dream come true for me to be living in a place like New York City...but over time, it also came with its challenges.

I felt the complexity of holding all of these many cultures and identities within me. I felt caught between worlds. The one I grew up in...was slowly blurring, and I felt like I was holding onto it so tight—afraid to lose it. And at the same time, I had this new world that was inviting me to grow into it."

"I realized, I had created this artistic psychodrama to take my stabbing more seriously....I came to realize and accept that I was the victim of a hate crime. Why did it take me so long to accept that?

I think whether it's micro-aggressions, or getting stabbing in the neck, or someone whispering about you under their breath, or bumping into us in the street—I think we have a tendency to want to minimize it. Or at least I did."

— Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang. ✨ EP 1 available now on all platforms ✨
