A couple who killed a woman and dumped her dismembered body in a park have been jailed for life.

Steven Sansom and his partner Gemma Watts, 49, previously pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to the murder of Sarah Mayhew, 38, and perverting the course of justice.

Mrs Justice Cutts sentenced Samson to life imprisonment for murder with a whole life order, which means he will never be released from prison, and five years for perverting the course of justice to run concurrently. It is the second life sentence for Sansom, 45, who was jailed for robbing and murdering a taxi driver in 1999 and released from prison on licence in 2019.

Watts held back tears as she was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years, along with five years for perverting the course of justice.

If she is ever released, she will spend the rest of her life on licence.

The couple are said to have known Ms Mayhew, who was found dead in Rowdown Fields, New Addington in south London, after police were alerted to the discovery of human remains on 2 April last year. The judge said that Sansom "had murder in mind" and that Watts, who was obsessed with him, took part in the murder.

Ms Mayhew was never seen again after she joined Sansom, whom she had met years before on a dating site, at his ground floor flat in Sutton at about 11pm on March 8 2024.The judge said: "Her fear and suffering must have been acute as she realised why she was there and what was happening.

"She was an innocent woman lured to that flat to die in order for you could both act out your bloodthirsty and wicked fantasy."Sansom is believed to have used the name Red Rum, which is murder spelt backwards, on his profile on Facebook.

On 10 March, a post appeared on the account saying: "Best friends are those who don't say anything when you show up at their door with a dead body. They just grab a shovel and follow you."

The pair sat quietly in the dock as details of their "kinky" s*xual relationship - including a stream of messages between them about be******ty, humiliation and causing hurt - were outlined at their sentencing hearing.

They indulged in "depraved conversation about s*xual activity" and the graphic messages between them soon evolved into becoming more than fantasy.

The judge said there was a "clear and proper inference in my view that this murder involved s*xual and sadistic conduct."

Sansom, from Sutton, southwest London, robbed and slashed the neck of 59-year-old married father-of-two Terence Boyle on Christmas Eve 1998.

He ordered a cab to take him home from East Croydon before attacking driver Mr Boyle, who was described as "a quiet, gentle, unassuming family man".

Prison officer is left with horrific scars across his face after being attacked with a disposable razor inside Britain's notorious 'Monster Mansion' jail

A prison officer was horrifically slashed across the face by a notoriously violent prisoner serving life for murder with an improvised weapon made from a disposable razor.

The experienced officer, in his 40s, faces being scarred for life after he was viciously cut twice across the face by an inmate at Wakefield Prison, West Yorkshire as this disturbing image shows.

The bleeding officer, who MailOnline is not naming, had to be rushed to Pinderfields Hospital in the town where he required more than 30 stitches to the two injuries which stretched from side of his right eye to the corner of his mouth and from his cheek to his lip.Martin Bates, 35, a con serving life for murder who has a history of violence inside prison.

Bates was moved to Wakefield - which has been dubbed 'Monster Mansion' because of the large number of dangerous prisoners it holds - only six months ago after previously assaulting a prison guard at HMP Manchester.

Yet within two days of moving to Wakefield, Bates slashed and tried to strangle notorious baby killer Stephen Boden and was moved to 'Rule 45' to be segregated from other prisoners in solitary confinement.

It is believed the attacker may have used the blade from a disposable safety razor to make a covert weapon.

Safety razors are in the process of being replaced by electric razors at 31 of the most violent prisons in England, including Wakefield, following a campaign by the Prisoner Officers' Association.

Exclusive: Sara Sharif's dad moved to 'hell' prison where lag's head was 'melted' in horrific attack
Ricky Killeen spent five years inside HMP Frankland where Sara Sharif's wicked father was recently transferred to - and he believes the killer will be targeted

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/sara-sharifs-dad-moved-hell-34572135

A former inmate who stayed in the same prison as Sara Sharif’s evil dad revealed the deadly attacks he witnessed.

Urfan Sharif was transferred to HMP Frankland after being slashed with a “jagged tuna lid” inside HMP Belmarsh. He is serving a life sentence for torturing and murdering his daughter.

But former criminal Ricky Killeen – who arrived at HMP Frankland aged 21 – said the child killer will struggle to find peace inside his new County Durham home.Speaking to The Mirror about his time there, he said: “My first impression of Frankland Prison was ‘WELCOME TO HELL’ inscribed inside the holding cell in reception.

“The other lads I was transferred with were s**ting themselves because of the rumours they had heard about how bad it is.”Ricky, who claimed to be calmer because it was his local prison and he knew people there, added: “Wakefield is the original ‘Monster Mansion’ but Frankland has become known that in the local press because it holds the worst prisoners in the country like Levi Bellfield, Ian Huntley and Wayne CouzensAnd as for what it will be like for Sharif, he added: “He can expect to be housed with some of the worst and most dangerous paedos in the country.

He will be a massive target for what he’s in for and he will be looking over his shoulder.”Ricky – who has his own YouTube channel Behind the Bars TV – was on the main wing but said the most severe violence took place on the VP wing holding paedophiles and notorious killers.

A source told The Sun meanwhile that Sharif was led into Frankland while other inmates were locked up and that he has been “terrified” and was “cowering in his cell”.

They added that he had been placed on the same wing as Bellfield after previously being attacked in Belmarsh just weeks after getting a life-term for murdering his ten-year-old girl.

Many of the 800 inmates at Frankland Prison will never be released and other notorious names include Lee Rigy's killer Michael Adebolajo and Rhys Jones' killer Sean Mercer.

28/01/2025

A man who claimed his daughter died in a "freak accident" during a play-fight with a knife has been found guilty of her murder.

Scarlett Vickers, 14, bled to death at her home in Darlington in July after suffering a 4in-deep (11cm) stab wound to her chest.

Simon Vickers claimed he caused the fatal injury while they were "mucking about", but a pathologist told Teesside Crown Court it was "practically impossible" for the wound to have been caused by a knife which had been thrown in the manner the defendant claimed.

The jury rejected the 50-year-old's explanation. He will be sentenced in February. The trial had heard Scarlett died at her home in Geneva Road after being stabbed in the kitchen on 5 July.

Her parents were the only other people present.

Mr Vickers had told the court he and Scarlett's mother, Sarah Hall, "would never harm" their daughter, adding: "She was our life, our purpose."

Her parents had said they were all "mucking about", throwing grapes at each other in the kitchen.

Ms Hall had told police and paramedics she had got the knife out to cut garlic bread and placed them next to some tongs.

Mr Vickers told the court he swiped a pair of tongs towards Scarlett which must have caught a knife, which he had not seen.

Scarlett's mother backed up Mr Vickers' version of events, telling jurors she believed it was an accident and her partner of 27 years would never harm their daughter. The prosecution's case relied on the pathologist's conclusion Scarlett's fatal injury must have been inflicted by a blade being firmly held in Vickers' hand.

Forensic pathologist Jennifer Bolton told the court kitchen knives were not designed to be thrown and the blade would have had to strike at a 90-degree angle to pass through Scarlett's pyjama top into her chest, otherwise it would have rebounded off.

Vickers said Scarlett was a "normal" and "cheeky" teenager and "fantastic daughter" who was "good at most things she did".

He said he had drunk about four glasses of wine on the evening of 5 July while watching the football and all three were happy and in a good mood.

His lawyers said Vickers was already serving a "life sentence" after Scarlett's death.Jurors spent more than 13 hours deliberating their verdict before reaching a majority agreement, with 10 finding Vickers guilty of murder.

He was remanded in custody to be sentenced on 10 February.

Senior Crown Prosecutor with CPS North East Anna Barker said Mr Vickers' account had been "wholly inconsistent with the forensic evidence" in the case.

Det Supt Craig Rudd of Durham Police said Scarlett had had "her whole life ahead of her" but it was "cruelly cut short by a man who was meant to protect her".

He added: "We may never know why or what caused Simon Vickers to do what he did that night.

"Sadly, today's verdict will not bring Scarlett back, but he will now face the consequences of his actions."

Mentioned in this paper aswel today.

Ex-con Ricky Killeen, with his own Category A past, didn't mince words speaking to MailOnline: "Every prisoner will want to target him because he killed children. Even small-time prisoners will try to attack him as that will mean they will get more drugs as rewards from other inmates.

"He detailed gruesome forms of assault including "prison na**lm", scalding concoctions used to inflict excruciating burns, and improvised stabbings with pointed household objects aimed potentially at claiming the killer's life. While he currently remains in Belmarsh, authorities are deliberating whether to shuffle him to another location.

A voice note that is doing the rounds on social media claiming that child killer Axel Rudakubana was attacked in his cell at HMP Belmarsh has been dismissed as "completely untrue" by the Ministry of Justice

EXCLUSIVE: Southport child killer Axel Rudakubana will be 'No1 target' behind bars as former prisoner warns 18-year-old could face being scalded with 'prison na**lm'Southport murderer Axel Rudakubana will be targeted all his life behind bars, like infamous child-killer Ian Huntley, a former prisoner has warned.

Rudakubana, 18, began a 52-year sentence last week at one of Britain’s most notorious prisons, Belmarsh in south-east London, where he was placed in isolation for his own safety. He was convicted of murdering three girls and ten counts of attempted murder.

He is now the ‘No 1 target’ for other inmates, who will try to kill him or seriously injure him because of what he did.

Ricky Killeen, 39, a former Category A prisoner, said: ‘Every prisoner will want to target him because he killed children.

‘Even small-time prisoners will try to attack him as that will mean they will get more drugs as rewards from other inmates.’Killeen, who was given a five-year jail term for a violent machete attack, said Rudakubana will be kept in the isolation unit in Belmarsh and assessed mentally. Then the Prison Service will determine whether to keep him there or move him to another prison.

He said Rudakubana – whose murder of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, at a dance club in Southport, Merseyside, horrified the nation – may have hot water mixed with sugar thrown at him. It is called ‘prison na**lm’ and causes horrific burns.Prisoners also sharpen plastic handles of toilet brushes to use as improvised knifes, said Killeen, adding that Rudakubana will face attacks all his life in prison.

Huntley, a former school caretaker who murdered Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, both ten, in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in 2002, is still a target of inmates.

The Soham murderer was nearly killed after having his throat cut by a fellow inmate in 2010 at HMP Frankland in County Durham.

Killeen, who now runs YouTube channel Behind The Bars TV, said Rudakubana could eventually be moved to Frankland.

Ian Acheson, a former prison governor, said: ‘The threat Rudakubana poses to others is probably unquantifiable. The threat he is subject to will be extremely high. Child killers are at the bottom of the prison hierarchy.’

Mr Acheson, an expert on prison radicalisation, added: ‘Given the facts of his attack, the targets and the intent to make biological weapons [ricin] and reference an Al Qaeda manual, the obvious berth for him would be with Islamist extremists.’

Last night, Steve Gillan, the General Secretary of the Prison Officers Association, said: ‘Of course this individual is going to be a high risk, but the Prison Service have dealt with many like him in the past.’

Southport killer Axel Rudakubana begins life sentence in Britain's toughest jail Belmarsh - home to some of nation's most infamous inmates and where prisoners will be queuing up to attack him.

Murderer Axel Rudakubana has begun a sentence stretching more than half a century inside one of Britain's toughest prisons, where he will rub shoulders with the nation's most infamous inmates - and, say insiders, he will never stop being a target for others wanting to attack him for his heinous crimes.

The teenage killer, who was handed a 52-year term for the Southport stabbings, is currently residing in Belmarsh in south-east London - a top security prison that houses many of Britain's most dangerous killers, s*x offenders and terrorists.

An inmate has been convicted of carrying out a string of attacks with homemade plastic weapons on prison officers.

Aklakar Rahman, 38, repeatedly attacked staff at HMS Swaleside in Kent and high-security Belmarsh jail, south London, in September and October 2022, the Old Bailey heard.

He was already serving a life sentence for earlier prison attacks after being jailed for Class A drugs offences in 2015.

Prosecutor Alistair Richardson said Rahman was a "highly dangerous man".

During his latest trial, he went on to admit five charges of attempted wounding.

The jury found him guilty of four more serious alternative charges of attempted murder.

He also admitted six attempted assaults on emergency workers and three charges of possessing sharpened pieces of plastic in prison.

He had repeatedly expressed a desire to kill prison officers, whom he regarded as "kuffar", a derogatory term for non-Muslims, the court heard.

Mrs Justice McGowan adjourned sentencing to 28 March.

Southport murderer Axel Rudakubana has been jailed for a minimum of 52 years - with the judge saying it's likely he will never be released.

Warning: This article contains details of violence that some readers might find distressing.

The 18-year-old pleaded guilty to murdering Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. He also admitted trying to murder eight other children, along with instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes, at the Hart Space in the Merseyside town on 29 July last year.

The judge, Mr Justice Goose, jailed him for life and said if Rudakubana had been 18 at the time of the attack he would have received a whole-life term - meaning no possibility of release.

He said the killings had caused "shock and revulsion" and that Rudakubana would have killed all 26 children if he'd been able.

Alice, Bebe and Elsie were stabbed multiple times in a ferocious attack that lasted 15 minutes.

The 18-year-old said in custody he was "glad" the children were dead and he was pleased with what he had done.Rudakubana's attack on "innocent, happy young girls" was clearly premeditated and he had showed no remorse, the judge added.

The triple-killer was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court, but was not present for the judge's remarks after telling his lawyer he would be "disruptive" during proceedings.

During sentencing earlier in the day he was twice ordered out of the dock after shouting that he "felt ill".

Rudakubana told his lawyer he had chest pains, was too ill to continue and wanted to see a paramedic, but the judge said two paramedics had deemed him fit to continue.Rudakubana was 17 when he walked into the dance studio before silently, indiscriminately stabbing his victims with a kitchen knife - a 20cm blade he had earlier bought on Amazon using encrypted software to hide his identity.

He stabbed some of his victims in the back as they tried to escape, pulling one girl back inside to attack her.

Police arrested him inside the building as he stood over a body, still holding the knife he bought on Amazon

Officers later found a plastic kitchen box containing ricin under his bed in the village of Banks, Lancashire, along with other weapons including a machete and arrows.

An analysis of his devices revealed an obsession with violence, war and genocide, with documents discovered including an academic study of an al Qaeda training manual.

Police believe he used techniques he learned from the PDF file, which contained instructions on how to commit knife and ricin attacks, to carry out the mass stabbing.

Rudakubana has pleaded guilty to charges of producing ricin and possession of information useful for the purposes of terrorism. But Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said there was no evidence he ascribed to any political or religious ideology and was not fighting for a cause, so the "cowardly and vicious attack" was not treated as terrorism.

"This is a young man with an unhealthy obsession with violence," she said.

"His only purpose was to kill the youngest and most vulnerable and spread the greatest level of fear and outrage, which he succeeded in doing."

The government announced an inquiry into how the state failed to recognise the risk posed by Rudakubana and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said he will consider changing the definition of terrorism if necessary.

The teenager was referred three times by schools to the government's anti-extremism programme between 2019 and 2021 over concerns about his interest in school shootings, Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, and the London Bridge attacks.

He also had repeated contact with police, the courts, the justice system and the mental health services in the years before he carried out the attack, including over using school computers to research acts of violence.Rudakubana was expelled from school for saying he was carrying a knife in October 2019, but returned to attack another pupil with a hockey stick, while carrying a knife in his backpack.

He pleaded guilty to assault, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of a knife over the incident and received a youth justice referral order focused on knife crime.

His parents called police four times about his behaviour, including on one occasion in May 2022 after they restricted his access to a computer.

On another occasion in March of the same year, a bus driver called the police because he had not paid the fare, and he told officers he had a knife, but they took him home to talk to his mother about securing knives at home.

No disciplinary proceedings have been brought against anyone involved in dealing with his case
