Police Scotland Ayrshire

A 27-year-old woman who died following a fatal crash in Ayrshire has been named as Alana Muir from Darvel.

The incident happened around 11.05am on Thursday, 17 October, on the A71 between Newmilns and Darvel. The crash involved a red Ford Focus Zetec and a silver Mercedes Vito.

Emergency services attended and Alana, who was driving the Ford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 24-year-old man, a passenger in the Ford, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 52-year-old man, was taken to Crosshouse University Hospital in Kilmarnock with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sergeant Martin Cunningham said: “Our thoughts remain with Alana's family and friends at this very difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we are asking anyone who saw what happened to please get in touch.

“In particular, if you were driving in the area at the time please check your dash-cam to see if you have anything that could help with our investigation.”

Anyone who can assist is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1148 of Thursday, 17 October, 2024.

BREAKING: Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has died aged 69

Alex was a prominent figure in the Scottish independence movement while leading the SNP between 1990 & 2000 then again between 2004 & 2014 during this time Alex headed the “Yes campaign” during the Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014.

Alex resigned as First minister back in 2014 following the results of the Scottish Independence referendum before returning to politics as leader of the Alba Party.
