"With eight months to go before the 2024 United States Presidential Election, global markets are on tenterhooks, closely observing the unfolding political landscape. As an anchor of the global economy, the United States (US) wields considerable influence over international economic trends, trade policies, and investment flows. This election is, therefore, not only a domestic affair but a global event with far-reaching implications for economic stability, trade dynamics, and geopolitics."

"If microfinance ‘works’, then it could be the magic bullet for ethically-conscious firms who want to maximise their social impact whilst making sustainable profits. But, any promises of such proportion must be fully scrutinised with reference to the existing evidence. In this paper, we elaborate on the central case for microfinance and consider what the unfolding evidence reveals about its successes and failures. Ultimately, we suggest that microfinance is an excellent local solution to credit access. However, it works best under selective conditions."

2023 has been a poor year for observers of the Chinese economy. After the long-awaited end to Dynamic Zero Covid, China watchers expected the country to return to its trend-high growth rate. Instead, despite comprehensive opening up, Chinese growth has been sluggish. Instead of accounts of recovering industries and economic triumphs, we have seen reports of slow consumption growth, a flagging construction sector, and the bankruptcy of major construction firms like the China Evergrande Group. This poor performance has led many observers to suggest that China may be entering its first “Balance Sheet Recession”. In this paper, we will outline the mechanisms underpinning a Balance Sheet Recession and consider whether China is entering into one. Ultimately we find that China exhibits several early warning signs of a Balance Sheet Recession, but is unlikely to have passed the threshold into full-fledged crisis. Moreover, should such a recession materialise, Chinese fiscal policy will likely be well-equipped to mitigate its more severe consequences.

Oman is a country locked between Saudi Arabia on the North, Yemen on the west, and the Persian and Indian Gulf on the eastern, maritime side. Its location is strategically interesting as it is at the intersection of maritime trade routes connecting India, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, historically utilized by the Portuguese Empire, and later the British.

Marko Kolanovic, chief strategist at JPMorgan, was interviewed in early October on CNBC, where he explained that he had been bearish on the stock market since the beginning of the year. He remains bearish and expects a pullback in the S&P500 of 20% soon. Given economic factors such as the stock rally within the last few months and improving employment statistics in the US, perhaps a more uncertain view is appropriate for the average investor.

The contentious practice of “no-fault evictions” through Section 21 notices, long a concern for tenants, is becoming more common, with evictions up 38% between July and September 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. Unfortunately, by delaying the repeal of Section 21, the Government has prioritised the interests of landlords over those of vulnerable renters.

Over the years, the threat of climate change and environmental degradation has caused organizations to mitigate and reverse these trends worldwide. Governments, corporations, NGOs, researchers, and citizens are increasingly trying to collaborate to find common grounds to improve the overall situation without compromising the global economy or their personal satisfaction. Among others, finance has been one of the solutions proposed. Despite criticism of significant banking institutions and the finance industry, a new way of ‘green’ investing has emerged. As the 18th edition of the G20 is about to begin, political decisions are becoming crucial to determine the fate of humanity. Hence, the next few years will be critical to ensure the financial system is fit for purpose to deliver the financing needed to achieve environmental and other SDGs.

Digital currencies are increasingly being prepared for in financial services, as they will revolutionise legacy structures and relations.

Digital currencies are typically considered as popularised cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ether. However, their technology is being increasingly considered in relation to financial services from the release of Central Bank Digital Coins (CBDCs) and Onyx by JP Morgan, which are more reliable and have the ability to restructure the financial world. The substantial impacts of these digital assets are particularly as they will allow for the proper uptake of blockchain technology, as well as a democratisation of financial opportunities.

Digital currencies have growing importance as they are being trialled or slowly implemented by central banks in most countries as central bank digital coins (CBDCs), allowing financial institutions to begin preparing for their eventual uptake tangibly. CBDCs are a digital fiat currency released by domestic central banks and can reshape financial transactions by allowing for real-time payments between corporations. This is as CBDCs operate on the blockchain, allowing for increasingly faster, more secure, real-time transactions. The impact of real-time payments from secure digital currencies is the opportunity for better cash management as payments will be instantly cleared, which is a factor that can largely impact the viability of companies. This can democratize financial opportunities for small and medium-sized companies that work on a smaller scale due to out-goings, such as paying employee wages, causing smaller margins for liquidity, as they must be paid in a timely manner to minimise reputational issues. This potential advantage will increase small and medium sized companies’ market competitiveness against larger firms.

The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic minority inhabiting Rakhine State in western Myanmar (Burma). They are currently regarded as one of the world’s most oppressed minority groups. The violations of their human rights originate from long-standing ethnic, religious, and political conflicts. Although the Rohingya have historical ties to the area that stretch back centuries, the Burmese government has consistently viewed them as foreigners and undocumented immigrants. They have faced persistent discrimination, violation of their fundamental rights, and rampant violence. The tension of these serious conflicts between the Rohingya and the Myanmar government became manifest in 2012 when communal violence erupted unchecked between the Rohingya and Rakhine Buddhists, killing and displacing thousands of Rohingya.

Turkish markets have gone through a very challenging period in the last few years. Since August 2018, high private sector debt, persistent current account deficits, high inflation, and high unemployment have increased macro-financial instability. Following the recent presidential elections, the situation appears unlikely to change anytime soon.

Argentina’s current president Alberto Fernández briefly met with the United States president Joe Biden at the end of March. He was seeking help, once again to renegotiate the significant amount of debt contracted with the IMF during 2018.

Although the IMF has helped Argentina several times during the past years, the debt negotiated in 2018 is of special relevance. It amounts to 45 billion US dollars, and it comes from an original arrangement for 57 billion of US dollars. Economists agreed this is the biggest loan in the IMF history. As expected, the agreement jointly came with a series of economic policy compromises aimed at achieving a fiscal deficit of 2.4% and 1.9% of GPD in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

In a world increasingly governed by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, the role of private equity in sustainable development has become a topic of growing interest. Private equity firms, historically focused on maximizing returns, are now presented with an opportunity to lead the charge in sustainable economic development within emerging markets. The potential of private equity to drive positive change by financing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) committed to long-term sustainability and broader societal impact is immense. By examining the challenges and opportunities of ESG integration in private equity, highlighting the importance of combining innovative philanthropy with profit-driven initiatives, and discussing the significance of stable legal and political governance in emerging markets, private equity is uniquely positioned to contribute meaningfully to the global pursuit of sustainable development.
