There is rarely a linear trajectory between point A and B.

So many people see the curated end point but don’t see the ups, downs and pivots that happen along the way.

The ability to bounce and rebound is key to be resilient.

It’s great to run fast or climb high but if you fall you better be able to land softly and be armed with your next move.

💪🏻 I’ve definitely had my share of stumbles....maybe a couple of ditches to climb out of...but that is all part of the journey.

👉🏻 being armed with strategies to recover, repair and come back stronger is a big factor to a holistic lifestyle

👉🏻 sit down and breath while you enjoy it

There are a few cliches that I really love but this is one of them.

‘The way you do one thing is the way you do everything’

It’s like another coaching mantra that I like...’slow is smooth, smooth is fast’.

When you take time to nail the fundamentals you can then do more complex tasks.

⁉️ if you can’t master a basic running stride would jump ahead to a complex movement?
⁉️ If cooking isn’t your strong suit you wouldn’t jump to a complex dish with multiple types of preparation until you mastered basic knife skills
⁉️ if you didn’t have an understanding of your own personal health you wouldn’t make a diagnosis without a full history and research.

Too often we try to go fast before we can move slowly with ease and repeatability.

If the way we do one thing translates into how we do everything then doesn’t it make sense that we tackle the fundamentals daily?

👉🏻 daily water intake
👉🏻 follow your prescribed nutrition plan
👉🏻 daily exercise
👉🏻 lifestyle adjustments

When you can repeat the fundamentals day after day you will build confidence and success.

Then you can learn to run, jump and move faster.
But always be prepared to slow down to master new skills so you can speed back up!

But you have the choice for how you show up!
👉🏻 how you react
👉🏻 how you take your emotion and direct it at other people
👉🏻 how you self sabotage, or not
👉🏻 how you hold your head
👉🏻 how quickly you can snap the band and go to the next issue and handle it with professionalism

⁉️ Many of us can do that in our professional lives.
But when it comes to personal issues we let them build and fester until they blow!

This is why exercise, nutrition and lifestyle matters!

❌ if we are always craving sugar when things get tough we look for more sugar
❌ when we are stressed of going for a walk or doing some breath work we vegetate on the couch and drink booze
❌ ...the list of self sabotage goes on and on

So, let me ask you. How are you going to show up today?

⁉️who doesn’t love a chicken 🍍 taco with fresh cut salsa and guacamole 🥑??

⁉️who else agrees that making multiple meals for the family is the most frustrating thing?

My three favourite self curated adventures are:
🏔 running/riding in the mountains
🧑‍🍳cooking...especially a black box where you don’t have a specific plan or know what your ingredients will be to start
👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 getting outside with the family and going for a ride, shooting hoops or going to the beach!

All of these adventures bring me joy and ground me in my core beliefs and values.

👉🏻They don’t have to be structured. 👉🏻They don’t have to be long.
👉🏻 But to get the most out of them you do need to be present. Minimize distractions.

Besides some fitness gains, these types of adventures bring about some other important physiological benefits...happiness reduces stress, shifts our nervous system, engages different parts of our brain and helps connect us to our family and community.

These benefits are so long lasting!

⁉️what are your running from or what are you running to?

💪🏻🏔🌊🧘‍♂️🏄‍♂️ 🏄‍♂️🧘‍♂️🌊🏔💪🏻
One of the biggest things I have realized over the last year plus now is that I love training and SELF CURATED ADVENTURES have provided me with the variety, intensity and mental outlet.

🏊‍♂️Don’t get me wrong, I still love racing but I no longer need to chase finish lines.
🚴‍♂️ I love the long solo sessions, or maybe with one or two training partners, where you get time to think, reduce the noise and spend time looking within
🏃‍♂️ when you get out in nature, climb mountains or ride your bike you get to see places that cars can’t access.

Eventually you can only run into the sun for so long without looking back and seeing the shadow lurking behind you.

Understanding your why and what is truly behind your reason for all those training hours, early mornings, late nights and clean eating becomes way clearer.

Is it easy, NO! Can it be simple, YES!

When you bet on yourself and invest in your health, wellbeing and future you can never lose!

⁉️ Who else is ready to invest in themselves?

9 years ago I jumped on a plane for San Diego for 2.5 day mentorship.

I had two young sons at home, a wife, responsibilities and wasn’t quite sure the next step or direction in my career or life.

I went to the mentorship with an open mind and open heart looking to learn from some of the very best and brightest in the industry.
I came away from the mentorship with more than I could ever hope for.

Experiences, friendships, business ideas, and a better idea of who I was and what I wanted.

When you are in balance the pendulum steadily moves from side to side...
👉🏻nothing is dominant.
👉🏻 nothing is powerful.
👉🏻 nothing changes.

⁉️ are you tired of nothing changing?

I’m just like you. We all wear lots of hats in life - and many times we are trying to make sure no balls hit the ground. I get it!

But when it comes to your health, prepping for a race or transforming your habits and your body there can’t be balance.

Balance won’t get you anywhere. You need to be attentive to your needs, adhere to your protocol, stick to your nutrition plan, supplements, sleep, screen time and who you are surrounding yourself with.

⁉️ does this sound overwhelming?

I can be. But doesn’t need to be. This is where coaching comes in.

When I work with a coach (yes I still work with coaches) is where I move the needle the most.

Out of balance isn’t chaos. It is strategic and purposeful...just like many of the decisions we all make in business!

Recovery is how you get stronger! 👉🏻sleeping well
👉🏻eating whole foods
👉🏻surrounding yourself with friends/family/colleagues who lift you up

Do these areas confuse you more than simplify things?

I was there too. I would just train and run through a mediocre diet, sleep would come and go but I rarely felt refreshed in the morning and the people around me didn’t necessarily pick me up.

My weight increased, my performance decreased and my productivity stagnated.

🙌 I made some specific shifts in life.
🙌 my food
🙌 my sleep routine
🙌 my training philosophy
🙌 the people I associated and learnt from.

These weren’t complex shifts but they were purposeful!

I learnt from mentors. I worked with a coach and I trusted in the process.

I learnt how to recover so I could make that next sprint!

⁉️What would your ideal morning routine looks and feel like?

I don’t do fasted cardio just because I love it...because if I could I would love to take my time in the morning.

My ideal start of the day would be the following:
1) morning elixir
2) preset/reset body prep
3) run..the the rest of the day can function more optimally.

I do love getting up early and chasing sunrises. It is amazing how good you feel when those first few beams of sunshine hit your face!

The other great part of a morning run...post run smoothie loaded with some anti-oxidant rich foods like this homemade almond milk blueberry smoothie!

It is never too late to make changes!

I once heard a client say to me ‘well I can’t lose weight, I won’t won’t look like me anymore’

How absurd a statement, but the reality is their perception, inner self monologue and self-belief needed to be addressed.

It isn’t just about supplement, or exercise or stress.

👉🏻 all the above is important and plays a role

But we don’t want to spend every moment of the day ‘swarming for yourself’

🙌 if you can relate with these statements:
- all you need to do is take 30 minutes of quiet time to meditate and reflect on all the gratitude you have in life!
- did you sit down and write this morning as you enjoyed your homemade elixir?

Don’t get me wrong...I love my quiet time, writing and elixirs. In fact those are all components of what I recommend to clients.

But the problem comes when you are told to do all that in addition to trying to grab your workout in the morning, getting yourself ready for work, getting the kids up and ready for school and fed...

👉🏻 of the recommendations don’t meet you where you are then compliance will be low.
👉🏻 lifestyle and nutrition recommendations should also help take away barriers before just piling on new stuff
👉🏻 moderation is often how many of us got to where we are today. For many, moderation doesn’t work but it gives us an excuse to not adhere.
👉🏻 most of us are motivated most of the time. I don’t hear from clients ‘I really wish I didn’t do XYZ better’. But we all know that motivation has ups and downs. That is the reality and learning how to not beat ourselves up when we have a down is a big part of most protocols.

⁉️ you see we are all unique with unique biochemistries and needs.
✅ unique protocols
✅ unique application of lifestyle interventions
✅ unique nutrition prescription
✅ unique use of supplements (if at all)

As the saying goes you connect the dots looking in the past.

💯For all of you who don’t know me or all of my story let me share some of me with you!

You never forget where you came from but that doesn’t define who you can be!

I was always shorter than people I played against. So I made up for it by doing whatever I could to do to be bigger.
👉🏻I didn’t discover strength training until later in my teen years...so I did the unhealthy thing I ATE!
👉🏻 I wasn’t eating chicken breast and broccoli. I ate McDonalds, ice cream and pasta by the plateful!

⁉️ when I went to University and was no longer playing team sports I fell in love with running.
👉🏻 so I started to out run my now mediocre diet
👉🏻 then I decided I wanted to run my first half marathon. One of my profs designed my program and got me in the track and we refined my diet.
👉🏻 I was not running and fuelling for performance

👉🏻 I have now gone in to run 10 marathons, 10+ half marathons, 3 Ironman, 8 1/2 Ironman, 50 km trail races and 100 km trail race.

Who you were doesn’t define who you will be but it is a reminder that can always sit in the back of your mind of who you do not want to be again!
