26/10/2024

The American luxury brand industry was shaken on October 24 as the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York halted Tapestry, Inc.’s ambitious $8.5 billion acquisition of Capri Holdings Limited.

Tapestry’s acquisition plan aimed to unify brands like Coach, Kate Spade New York, Versace, Jimmy Choo, and Michael Kors under a single luxury empire, allowing Tapestry to compete on a larger scale with European rivals.

However, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) argued that Tapestry and Capri are direct competitors in the U.S. market. The FTC claimed that the acquisition would “limit market competition and raise the risk of price increases.” During an eight-day trial in September, the FTC consistently sounded the alarm on these risks, which the court ultimately supported with its ruling.

On October 22, former & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries was arrested on s*x trafficking charges.

In addition, Jeffries’ partner Matthew Smith and middleman James Jacobson were indicted as part of an investigation led by the FBI and federal prosecutors in Brooklyn. 17/10/2024

On September 15, French luxury conglomerate LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) announced its third-quarter results for 2024. Although overall sales reached €19.076 billion (approximately $21 billion), organic sales declined by 3%, falling significantly short of analysts’ expectations.

The 5% sales drop in the company’s core Fashion & Leather Goods division was particularly impactful.

In addition, sales in Asia (excluding Japan) fell by 16%, largely due to weakened consumer confidence in China. Meanwhile, Japan remains an important market for Chinese travelers, benefiting from the weak yen, though its growth rate slowed sharply from 57% in the second quarter to 20% in the third quarter.

On October 13, the major shareholder of the British luxury brand Mulberry, operated by the Mulberry Group, issued a statement declaring that it has no intention of selling its shares in response to Frasers Group’s takeover proposal. This move clearly signals an intent to stop Frasers’ acquisition attempt.

Mulberry, known as a luxury leather bag brand from UK, gained widespread attention in the 2010s, thanks to the support from fashion icons like Alexa Chung and Kate Moss. For the full year 2024, revenue fell from £159.1 million the previous year to £152.8 million, and net losses plummeted by 353%, from a £13.2 million profit to a £33.5 million loss.
