A growing number of North Jersey lawmakers are criticizing the state Board of Education’s controversial move to incorporate gender identity into the equity policy that applies to public school districts statewide. In a 6-5 vote on Aug. 2, the board approved several revisions to the state’s administrative code, which include removing a series of gendered terms and prohibiting districts from segregating s*xual education classes based on biological s*x. Additionally, transgender students will now be able to participate in traditionally gender-segregated school activities instead of being prohibited by their assigned gender at birth. “We want to be clear. Though the State Board of Education sets guidelines on curriculum, it is our local communities, through their elected boards of education, that decide on the final lesson plans," said State Senate President Nicholas Scutari (D-22) and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-19).
The only thing less appealing to American voters right now than voting for either President Joe Biden or Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential election is a third party fusion ticket. A recent Monmouth University Poll found support for an alternative drops when the premise moves from a generic bipartisan ticket to one where actual candidates are named. While the presence of a third party in the race would siphon votes from both major party nominees, it is not apparent it would play the role of a spoiler in a hypothetical situation. In a Biden-Trump rematch, 47% of registered voters say they will either definitely (36%) or probably (11%) vote for the Democratic incumbent and 40% who will definitely or probably support the former President. The biggest letdown in the national poll are those hoping for a bipartisan third ticket—only three in 10 voters responded they would entertain voting for a third-party “fusion” ticket composed of a Democrat and a Republican.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer is leading a coalition of bipartisan lawmakers and the families of the Parkland, FL school shooting victims in a bid to make schools safer across the U.S. The Alyssa’s Legacy Youth in School Safety Alert (ALYSSA) Act of 2023 will require silent panic alarms in all schools to immediately alert law enforcement of an active shooter situation. The second piece of legislation, Strengthening Our Schools (SOS) Act of 2023, would increase investment in more well-trained school resource officers so that every school has a first responder already on the campus in the event of a critical incident. “I can promise you none of us here today will ever give up in our fight for you, the memories of your children, and for the children across our nation,” Gottheimer told the Parkland parents. “We are here today to…turn their memory — and the pain their family and friends carry every day — into action.”
New Jersey's Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver passed away at the age of 71 from an undisclosed illness on Aug. 1.
A lawmaker for 27 years, Oliver rose to be Assembly Speaker in 2009, just six years after first being elected to the 34th Legislative District. She was selected by Phil Murphy to be his running mate in 2017 and became the state’s second lieutenant governor and first woman of color to win a statewide office for a position created nearly a decade earlier after New Jersey watched two consecutive governors resign. "When I selected her to be my running mate in 2017, Lieutenant Governor Oliver was already a trailblazer in every sense of the word," said Gov. Phil Murphy. "I knew then that her decades of public service made her the ideal partner for me to lead the State of New Jersey. It was the best decision I ever made."
