Can we talk about cooking with MdDS?
Who else gets a huge symptom spike when working in the kitchen? This is what cooking feels like to me.
Also if you have MdDS, are you the main cook in the household, or does someone else do most of the cooking?

Did you know that vestibular disorders make it difficult to walk, talk, and think? These disorders can have a massive impact on day-to-day life, and too often that goes completely unseen. Unless you have experienced it, it is hard to imagine what it is like to live with a vestibular condition. That's why we need to raise awareness!

When people hear that you are dizzy, they often (wrongly) think that it's no big deal. But in reality, just getting out of bed can be difficult when you have a vestibular disorder.

Symptoms like vertigo, dizziness, nausea, brain fog, fatigue, stress, and anxiety all combine to make simple movements like getting out of bed difficult. If this is you, you are not alone. For information about living with a vestibular disorder visit vestibular.org/coping

I think my stiff doll pose is a little off, I forgot Barbie's fingers are always touching instead of spread out. 😅
First scene! 👌
Had me crying tears of joy when all those little girls broke free from playing "mommy" with their baby dolls.

Benzodiazepines are a common medication used to treat symptoms associated with vestibular disorders like MdDS and VM.
Today is Benzodiazepine Awareness Day. It's a controversial class of medication that can cause dependancy. Often times physicians warn against prolonged use and suggest not to take it any more than a few weeks.
Most vestibular patients who are prescribed benzodiazepines are recommended to use them for long periods of time, since these medical conditions are chronic and not curable.
My journey with MdDS and vestibular migraines has been a long 6 year ride. Honestly I can not imagine how much more difficult every moment would be if I did not have benzodiazepines in my toolbox to help me through high symptom moments.
These scare tactic articles (like the one attached) cause me extreme anxiety, because they are not "bad medications" if prescribed and taken responsibly, and for the proper conditions. The thought of these medications being taken away from people living with this debilitating illness is absolutely terrifying.
Medications work differently depending on your condition. With MdDS we feel a constant sense of motion and disorientation, like being drunk when you haven't had a drink. Taking a benzodiazepine while symptoms are high reduced the sense of motion and disorientation, taking away the "drunk" feeling. Without these medications I can not focus, I struggle to walk a straight line, am nauseous from the sense of motion, and get slurred speech from the dizzy disorientation.
I agree these medications are not for everyone, but if they can improve your quality of life while living with a debilitating condition, I would hate to see them taken away from the patients they are helping.
What are your thoughts and experiences?

July 11 celebrates World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day (W-BAD) to raise global awareness about medically induced dependence on benzodiazepines.

Chronic illnesses lesson of the week:
Don't allow the things you can't enjoy or can't do, take up any space in your life. It's hard to accept when you can't do something you used to enjoy. Letting go of those things can feel like letting go of part of yourself, or like giving up. Try not to focus on what you can't do or can't enjoy, shift that focus to what you can do and what you can enjoy. Free up space for THOSE things in your life.
When I was diagnosed with MdDS over 5 years ago I learned that using an elliptical glider increased MdDS symptoms, and was advised not to use any sort of stationary equipment. I had a Gazelle elliptical glider which I stored away in a closet, thinking I will use it again when I "get better". Every time I opened that closet and saw that Gazelle I was reminded of what I couldn't do. The Gazelle was big and clunky and heavy, and I allowed it to take up that space for 5 years. Repeatedly reminding me that I was not "better" yet. This year I made a goal to declutter and get rid of things that do not "spark joy".
That Gazelle didn't "spark joy", instead it sparked resentment, disappointment, discouragement, frustration, and self doubt. So I dug it out of the closet, dusted it off, took some pictures and listed it for sale on marketplace. A lady bought it last week and as she drove away with my Gazelle in the back of her car, I didn't feel like I was letting go of something I wanted or even something I found useful. Instead it felt like I was letting go of the resentment, the disappointment, the discouragement, the frustration, and the self doubt. My only regret is not letting go of it sooner. Make space for things that bring you joy.
