Governor Denay warns of crisis as floods hit Jonglei

Jonglei State Governor Denay Jock Chagor on Wednesday called for help to avert a humanitarian crisis due to the combined effect of devastating floods and inter-communal violence in the state.

Thousands of people have been marooned by floods in parts of Jonglei, with Bor and Twic East counties the worst affected as families are forced to move to higher grounds.

Speaking on Wednesday, Governor Denay said there is a humanitarian crisis in the state as thousands of people have been displaced from their homes by floods.

“As we speak now, people are in swamps. People are trying to move to higher grounds, so the humanitarian situation is dire,” said Denay. “My message to the people of Jonglei is that we need peace and unity so that peace dividends reach everyone.”

The official appealed to the national government and aid agencies operating in the country to intervene.

On Wednesday, President Salva Kiir declared a three-month state of emergency in the restive state of Jonglei and Pibor Administrative Area due to the ongoing inter-communal violence and the dire humanitarian situation there.

Two killed by floods

Two people have died in floodwaters that have forced a large number of people to leave their homes in Bor town of Jonglei on Saturday, a local official said.

John Makuei, the public health deputy director for Bor municipality, said the two bodies were found in Hai Fangak and Achegdiir areas.

“A man in Achengdiir was swiped away by floodwaters as he tried to cross to the other side. Also, a woman was found drowned in floodwaters in Hai Fangak,” Said Makuei.
Makuei said the displaced families in Bor are at risk for waterborne diseases.

The Sudanese opposition groups and the Sovereign Council have heeded to the call of the ordinary Sudanese common men and women who were suffering and in need of peace, and they are now on board to embrace peace, therefore the threat to the stability of Sudan is about to be restored with the official and formal launching of the Sudan peace negotiation process.

It is for the first time in the history of Sudan that all the political parties, movements and armies came together in Juba to negotiate under the initiative of President Kiir in order to attain peace and end the conflict in Sudan.

Both the Chairmen of Sudan Revolutionary Fronts Dr. Al-hadi Iddris Yahaya and the Chairman of SPLM/N General Abdala-Azizi Adam Al-hilu commend the efforts of President Kiir and maintain their political will to negotiate in good faith towards ending the political standoff in Sudan once and for all.

The Prime Minister of Egypt Mostafa Kemal Madbouly reiterated the commitment of his Government to stand and support the initiative and this peace process for peace, stability and development of Sudan.

Meanwhile the President of Sudan Sovereign Council General Abdul-Fatah Al-Burhan described the initiative of President Kiir as a homegrown process that would address the root causes of the conflict. General Burhan say Juba is the rightful place for the Sudan peace negotiations and his government would stand behind this initiative.

On his part, the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni called on the Sudan Sovereign Council to work for the prosperity, identity and the interest of their people not their political interests.

President Museveni called on the Sudanese parties not to waste time and address all the issues and come-up with the resolutions to the conflict in Sudan.

The Prime Minister of Ethiopia Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali applauded the effort of President Kiir and the region to work for peace in Sudan.

Dr. Ahmed emphasized that this initiative and process should bring back peace and stability to Sudan and called on IGAD countries and African Union to support this process and get positive results that would make people of Sudan happy.

In addition, President Salva Kiir Mayardit applauded the President of Sovereign Council and the Cabinet as well as Sudan Revolutionary Fronts and SPLM/N to heed to the call for peace in Sudan. Adding that only political dialogue, negotiation and compromises would be the best solutions to resolving the conflict not through the barrel of a gun, also, for the government and the opposition to negotiate in good faith to usher in peace and security in Sudan.

The Sudanese Peace talks were being held in several Countries but there has not been tangible results and Juba is now the next arena to step-up all its efforts to breakdown the political deadlock in Sudan.
