We  are so happy to launch season 3 and to do so celebrating "freedom" with  Patrick Stephens, who after 24 years in prison was finally able to come home to his family. 

On this episode, we have a candid conversation with Patrick and his biggest supporter (his sister ). I will NEVER FORGET the brief conversation I had with her during my junior year at UCF as I escorted her while she waited for a talk she was giving.

I was a young, eager Psychology major with a minor in African American and Women's studies ready to sop up wisdom from her LIVE SPOKEN WORDS like an empty sponge.

That was 1997...this picture of her was taken in 1996 in New York.

The impact she had and the thoughts/conversations she ignited on the intersections of race, gender, place, class and sexuality will not be forgotten. 🖤🙏🏾

Character. Integrity. Service.

Today, another giant of a human being has transitioned. Colin Powell the first Black National Security Advisor, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and secretary of state in U.S. history, died at 84. Colin, son of Luther & Maud Powell, immigrants from Jamaica, lived a life of service. His service wasn’t to a political party but to the better ideals of America. Like so many Americans today we mourn his death but are also reminded that leadership requires character. Leadership requires integrity. Leadership requires service.

Biz Markie died at a YOUNG 57 years old from complications related to diabetes.

African American people are more likely to develop diabetes than white American people. This may be because we are more likely to experience barriers to methods that could lower our likelihood of developing it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 10.5% of the population of the United States had diabetes in 2018.
In the report, diagnosed diabetes was at 11.7% among non-Hispanic Black people in the U.S. and 7.5% among non-Hispanic white people in the U.S.

In 2018, non-Hispanic Black people were twice as likely as non-Hispanic white people to die from diabetes, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

These racial disparities concerning diabetes may be due to a combination of environmental, socioeconomic, physiological, and genetic factors. Know your numbers. Monitor Your Health!

FREEDOM. We can’t imagine the feelings the enslaved Texans felt when they heard that word. A 2.5 year delayed message, but what we do know is that they celebrated. While, we acknowledge we have yet reached full freedom, we celebrate today. Celebrate Black life. Celebrate Black joy. Celebrate Black beauty. Celebrate

We’re relieved at this verdict, but let’s be clear. This is NOT justice. This is accountability. We are praying for George Floyd’s family.

The work must continue. We must dismantle that systems that continue to perpetuate the murder of unarmed Black men & women by those who are sworn to protect and serve.

Earl Simmons ( DMX ) lived his complicated life out loud. His music covered the wide range of emotions humanity brings, yet it was his rage and pain that most moved us. It moved us because he gave words to the pain many faced due to unresolved trauma. As time went on, we all cheered for his victory. We wanted him to win. We needed him to win. His winning gave hope. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the very demons he tried to slay, but even in death he is winning. As we reflect on his life, we are forced again to confront the systems that enable trauma. The traumas that then lead to higher incidents of substance abuse and mental illness. life and even his death is reminder that we are complex human beings who deserve love and a world where we fight like a pack of pit bulls to make it a safer one. One where we give space for healing and we equip our communities for healing.
