We’re back!
Episode 1 of Season 2 starts off with, none other than: THE CICADA ARMAGEDDON!
We answer all your questions:
“Do I need to put a paper bag over my head and lie down?”
“Will all my plants be unalived?”
“Will my child ever be able to live a fulfilling life afterwards?”
“Why are all the horticulturists, entomologists, botanical gardens, and nurseries so calm about this!?”
In true Take It or Leaf It fashion, we did the research so you didn’t have. Luckily, everything is going to be alright. Some of you have already started to see cicada emergence and some of you will be seeing it shortly. Some of you saw periodic cicada emergence last year and some of you will see it next year.
Let’s take a moment to be truly amazed and fascinated by these insects that live for 13 or 17 years under ground before crawling to the surface for their final metamorphosis all for the chance to get lucky 😉. Give our episode a listen so that you can throw your cicada fear away.

@nfarringdon and @hortwise go to a park to find some goodies to talk about to coordinate with their podcast. We found some Japanese beetles feasting on Perennial Hibiscus and Roses and decided make a video discussing them. Episode 5 is available! The primary focus, minus the first 15 minutes 😁, of this episode is the discussion of common pests you may encounter in your garden or on your plants. In addition to talking about those annoying polypods (word of the day), we also give a shout-out to the beneficial biological control insects which can help hinder some of the pests. Synthetic and organic methods of control are also discussed. Horticultural message: do not confuse Dipel Dust with diaper dust 😎

Welp, we lost power. Unfortunately we could not figure how to upload Episode 5 via pencil and paper by candlelight. TBD on our newest episode release, but we’ll post as soon as it’s available.
The Northern Catalpa Tree (Catalpa speciosa) is blooming and has stunning flowers. The flowers lead the way to a large, bean-like seed pod which has inspired the common name, Cigar Tree. This tree is great for pollinators and it is fast growing, but be conscientious of where you plant it (if considering it in your landscape). This tree can be prone to small branch dropping and, to some, the seeds can be a nuisance. Overall, it can still be quite a stately tree in the right spot of your landscape.
