According to a 2018 Solar Energy Industries Association report, women in solar make up 26% of the workforce, compared to the US workforce overall, where they represent 47%. And when you look closely, women often make up even less of the engineering, design, and installation teams in solar companies.

Thanks to Amicus O&M Cooperative CEO Amanda Bybee for breaking down the figures.

Great article in the Charleston Gazette-Mail by Solar Holler founder, CEO and Solar For All guest, Dan Conant.

"Since 2015, renewable energy has been the largest source of new energy generation built across our nation. In the past couple years, the renewable energy industry has just started to show its potential here in West Virginia.

In 2021, our team at Solar Holler built 25% of the state’s total solar capacity. And, we did it the right way, with union labor.

Here in Appalachia, our mountains and our muscle powered the rest of the country. Our energy electrified New York City, and turned iron into steel in Pittsburgh. If there’s one thing we do well, it’s energy. But, coal jobs are slowly fading..."

"...Now, If you think this is white-guy speak for “I really want to feel good about what I do for a living” well then you’re in for a treat because you and I both want to hear how Geoff rationalizes his privilege (hint: he’s very aware of and in touch w/it) and contextualizes the equity & diversity he says his company, Third Sun Solar, stands for. Third Sun Solar, a woman-owned and led company as well as a B-Corp, is an award-winning solar installation firm serving commercial, institutional, government and residential clients throughout the Midwest that Geoff founded in 2000 from his attic. It’s a company that has served the rural Ohio Appalachian (mainly coal-miner) communities surrounding his family for 2 decades helping wean them off fossil fuels..."

A lot of times we think of diversity as something that is separate and not how we ourselves (no matter who we are!) add to the diversity equation.

Please welcome guest number 16 to our show ☀️ Irasema Garcia. Irasema serves as the Director of Equity, Inclusion & Diversity at GRID Alternatives Have you heard of GRID? If you're interested in solar - or clean energy - this organization is a MUST to follow.

GRID's mission is to build community-powered solutions to advance economic and environmental justice through renewable energy. And they do this through making solar technology and job training accessible to underserved communities.

BUT, it's not only THROUGH the work they do everyday that demonstrates their commitment to equity; it's the WAY they carry forward the work within the organization.

In this episode, Irasema describes GRID's work and key principles that guide their team to carry that work forward.

From the GRID Alternatives website: Under-resourced communities and communities of color disproportionately bear the burden of environmental injustice and climate change. The voices and leadership of economic and environmental justice communities are key to creating equitable and lasting solutions.
