On this day, exactly 29 years ago, an act was passed, giving birth to the Caraga Administrative Region!

Comprising the provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur, alongside the cities of Butuan and Surigao, we proudly became Region XIII - The Caraga Region!

Today, we reflect on our rich history, diverse culture, and the journey that has defined us as a region.

The Philippines Guardian’s Brotherhood Makamandag Mahogany Chapter extended their humanitarian efforts by serving free hot porridge to flood victims on Tuesday afternoon, February 6th in Purok 5A- Barangay Mahogany.

Nearly 400 cups of hot porridge, commonly known as "pospas," were served.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 | 𝐁𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐀𝐍 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆

Riverside barangays in Butuan City have been flooded since Friday, February 1, following a week-long heavy rain in the Caraga region due to the trough of a Low-Pressure Area outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

The Butuan City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) has placed 13 barangays under the order of forced evacuation because of the rising water levels of the Agusan River which was recorded at 2.8 meters which is within the Red Warning Alert Level indicating flood alert warning level 3 at around 10:00 in the morning of February 4.

The 13 Barangays are Baobaoan, Mandamo, San Vicente, Baan Riverside, Golden Ribbon, Pangabugan, Mahogany, Maon, Buhangin, Agusan Pequeño, Aupagan, Obrero, ug Bading.

Siargao's surfing sensation, John Mark "Marama" Tokong, once again showcased his exceptional skills by emerging victorious in the men's shortboard heat at the 2024 La Union International Pro World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 3000, held at Urbiztondo Beach, San Juan, La Union, on Thursday, January 25.

In the finals, Tokong bested Sweden's Kian Martin with a total score of 17.90 points, securing a convincing 4.65-point lead.

The World Surf League (WSL) said that this victory granted Tokong an additional 3,000 points, propelling him eight positions higher in the rankings to No. 6.

"To be honest, I didn't really expect that I was going to win because all the athletes are from Japan, Indonesia, and around the world. I'm so happy, I'm so stoked right now because everyone here is supporting me. I'm not just doing this for myself; I'm doing this for my family and for the Philippines," Tokong shared with reporters.

This victory in La Union marked Tokong's sixth win in the QS, the fifth being in the Philippines and the first outside of his home break in Siargao.

The Tribu Kamanting Performing Arts Guild of San Jose, Dinagat Islands province, was hailed as the 2nd place winner in the Ritual Showdown Free Interpretation category during the Sinulog sa Sugbo 2024 in Cebu City on January 21, 2024.

The group also secured the 2nd spot in Best in Musicality (Free Interpretation) and the fourth place in Best in Street Dancing.

Siargao Island has officially introduced the candidates who will vie for the title of Miss Universe Philippines-Siargao Island 2024 on January 7, Sunday.

The candidates represent the following towns: Burgos, Del Carmen, General Luna, San Benito, Santa Monica, and Socorro.

The coronation rites are scheduled to take place on February 1, 2024. The chosen winner will be representing Siargao Island in the national Miss Universe Philippines pageant.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊: 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐚 𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑

Five Higher- Education Institutions in the Caraga region have secured positions in the University Ranking in the Philippines by uniRank 2023.

Caraga State University in Butuan City claimed the top position, followed by Father Saturnino Urios University in Butuan City at the second spot. Northeastern Mindanao State University in Tandag City secured the third position, while St Paul University Surigao in Surigao City and St Joseph Institute of Technology in Butuan City secured the fourth and fifth ranks, respectively.

The rankings, which encompass 227 educational institutions across the country, are determined by an algorithm based on four web metrics from various sources.

"The rankings are based on an algorithm that integrates four web metrics: Majestic Referring Domains with a minimum Trust Flow (55%), Similarweb Global Rank (35%), Moz Domain Authority (5%), and Majestic Trust Flow (5%)," uniRank stated.

Established in 2005, uniRank™ is an international higher education portal offering reviews and rankings for over 13,900 officially recognized universities and colleges across 200 countries.

SM City Butuan hosted a Media Thanksgiving Day on Wednesday December 27 at the SM City Butuan Event Center, gathering some national media reporters, government media, influencers, and radio stations in Butuan City.

Innah Capulong-Tiguman, Public Relations Officer of SM City Butuan said the event aims to acknowledge the efforts and contributions of its local media partners.

Around 30 individuals attended the thanksgiving event.

In a significant recognition of the Philippines' cultural heritage, Abina Tawide Coguit, an Agusan Manobo embroiderer from La Paz, Agusan del Sur, has been honored as one of the nine Manlilikha ng Bayan 2023.

Presidential Proclamation No. 427, series of 2023 stated that Coguit is recognized for her commitment to safeguarding and promoting the Agusan Manobo Suyam (embroidery) tradition.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA) emphasized the rigorous selection process that led to the recognition of these cultural masters, each representing a unique facet of the Philippines' diverse cultural tapestry.

Suyam, meaning "thread" in the Manobo language, takes center stage in Agusan Manobo embroidery.

The Local Government Unit of Lapaz shared insights into this unique form of expression, revealing that Suyam serves as a visual language through which the Agusan Manobo people convey their deep connection to ancestral lands, spiritual beliefs, and social hierarchy.

“Suyam adorns the garments of the Agusan Manobo people, transforming them into canvases of cultural identity and storytelling,” LGU Lapaz said.

In April 1992, the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National Living Treasures Award was institutionalized through Republic Act No. 7355.

The NCCA, through the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Executive Council, conducts the search for the finest traditional artists of the land, adopts a program that will ensure the transfer of their skills to others, and undertakes measures to promote a genuine appreciation of and instill pride among the people about the genius of the Manlilikha ng Bayan.

Coguit is the lone Manlilikha ng Bayan from the Caraga region.

𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝟖𝟒,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐘 '𝐊𝐀𝐁𝐀𝐘𝐀𝐍' 𝐈𝐍 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐀

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) has reported that a total of 84,072 individuals, equivalent to 24,053 families, have been displaced across the Caraga Region as a result of Tropical Storm 'Kabayan.'

According to the latest situational report released on December 20, 2023, by the NDRRMC, 68,461 people are currently seeking refuge in 401 evacuation centers established throughout the region. 15,611 individuals have found shelter outside these designated centers.

The report further indicates that the total number of affected individuals in the Caraga Region has reached 90,096.

Among the recorded damages are 50 partially damaged houses, while 4 houses have been reported as totally damaged.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has officially canceled all Tsunami Warnings associated with the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck 30 km offshore of Surigao del Sur on December 2, 2023, at 10:37 PM.

The decision comes as monitoring stations confirm the passing of the tsunami threat, with the last recorded wave arrival reported at 02:52 AM, December 03 at the Hinatuan-Bislig Bay Station on Mawes Island.

"The tsunami threat associated with this earthquake has now largely passed the Philippines. Consequently, DOST-PHIVOLCS has now canceled all Tsunami Warnings issued for this earthquake event," PHIVOLCS stated.

PHIVOLCS said the local governments are urged to swiftly assess the aftermath of the tsunami and provide necessary guidance to affected communities.

Boats at sea are advised to follow standard procedures from the Coast Guard or port authorities as they safely return to the coast.

Tsunami advisory has been issued by PHIVOLCS with wave heights more than one meter above normal tides.

Coastal areas of Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental are at high risk.

Tsunami waves expected between 10:37 PM to 11:59 PM, 02 Dec 2023 (PST).

Residents urged to evacuate immediately to higher grounds. Boat owners advised to secure vessels in harbors and move away from the waterfront.

EARTHQUAKE ADVISORY: Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake Jolts Caraga- Phivolcs

An earthquake, measuring 6.9 in magnitude, jolts Caraga region and parts of Mindanao.

The quake occurred at 10:37 PM local time with its epicenter located 42 km N 66° E of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

Cities like Bislig in Surigao Del Sur and Cabadbaran in Agusan Del Norte reported Intensity V shaking.

The earthquake has also affected Butuan, causing widespread shaking.

Reports indicate that a majority of Butuan is experiencing a power outage.

Authorities are assessing the situation. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and prioritize safety. Follow local advisories for emergency information.

21-year-old Rydelle Abarico secured her first international Gold medal after she dominated the Womens Finals at the Thailand Tropical Downhill Skateboarding Competition held in Khao E-to, Prachinburi District, November 25-26.

Hailing from Alegria, Surigao del Norte, Abarico, a 2019 SEA Games bronze medalist and current World #5, showcased her downhill prowess, finishing atop the leaderboard with a best run time of 1 minute and 39.284 seconds during the qualifying rounds.

In a fierce competition, Thailand's Mp Nawapan Aung-insombut and China's Xiaoling Peng secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Claiming the top spot, Abarico won a grand prize of 25,000 Thai Baht.
