The Hollow Tree
James Brogden
⭐: 4/5

Pros: If you're fascinated with death and what lies after it, you'll be drawn to this book. The chaos and confusion dying can potentially create is personified within these words and will take you on quite the adventure.

As someone who's had many, many experiences with the "others" (that is, deceased souls), THT gave me a different way to see what might be beyond the veil. The others never tell me and I never ask, but I do think it's a bit of what we believe mixed in with some sort of design a tad bit. THAT made my mind wander, no doubt.

It also made me wonder how people who weren't born with the "gift" may "obtain" it during life, such as our MC does. It's all I've ever known, so to think one could just... Develop it after an accident, well, yes. Quite intriguing.

Cons: There is a bit of a go-around. Just when you think resolution has occurred, a new problem happens. In the end, it's not a bad thing and as I've previously stated, it really lends to the idea that death can be a confusing time for the recently departed, respectfully. You just need to hang in there for it.

Conclusion: If you're in the mood for a take of the other side and for all the components aforementioned, I do recommend you read this book. Despite my con, it's well worth your time!

WELL THEN

Pros: This story wasn't your usual thriller. I was impressed by how quickly it moved while still giving sufficient details to keep me hooked.

I also really enjoyed the character growth and introspection of one of the MCs (you'll see if you read it). You don't see that a lot, especially with how far the change went from being a con artist in love with her job to not.

Cons: I can't think of any, but am really trying to since my usual review format is p/c.

Conclusion: If you're craving a different kind of story with twists, pick this up. Admittedly, there are twistier books out there, but this one is meant to be shorter and more fast paced, so I would say it still is entertaining. I know I was thinking about it when I wasn't able to be reading and that's always a good sign, especially with as picky of a reader as I am!

Together We Rot
Skyla Arndt
⭐: 4/5
Pros: I like folklore and enjoyed that aspect of this book. I enjoyed the character and plot development as well. I appreciated how Arndt wrote it: she kept with themes, had intriguing analogies, and really used these things quite well for one of our MCs personalities more than others. It was rather beautiful, honestly.
Loved the cultish, religious vibes that drive this book. The concepts were interesting in how they were relayed overall.
Cons: I'm not big on love scenes and there's a few in here that I skimmed through. I understand why it was necessary to have these two characters have the relationship dynamic they did, but I was more interested in the dark side of things. That's not a con for everyone, just me. Also, I always review in pros/cons format.
This is super silly, but the word "lurched" is used so many times that my ears began listening for it.
Conclusion: If you need a YA audience book with a touch of horror and cult, try this one out. Same for if you appreciate a creative writing style that stays on track but still provides enough details to saturate your mind of what's going on.

The Wives
Fisher
⭐️: 5/5

Pros: first, when you don't live in a lifestyle you're curious about but not curious enough to think of joining... this book is one of those. However, not all is as it seems. I truly can say no more without giving the whole thing away.

Initially, this felt predictable. In fact, I found myself wondering if I liked the MC thinking that she'd signed up for this, so why is it her "mission" to mess this bro's life up? This felt like a jealous woman who could've foreseen events and still acted on her emotions. Can't say anymore without spoilers. Read my conclusion for why you should read this.

Cons: this may come the more I marinate on the plot, but I still don't quite understand what happened. I'm a delayed processor anyway, but wanted to churn out a raw review, so I guess it's good if you're similar to me and like to have things to think on later.

Conclusion: if you want an intriguing topic to read about from a non-traditional perspective, please pick this up! If you like to be constantly thinking, "this is too predictable, so therefore there has got to be something coming that I don't see, please tell me that's the case..." this is your book. Just saying.
