AMARANTHE
Metropolis Fremantle with special guests Silent Knight
Review by Stephanie Jewell
Perth local power metal legends, Silent Knight opened for Swedish metal lords, Amaranthe on Wednesday night at Metropolis in Fremantle, bringing the energy! It was quite the operatic opener, with shredding guitar riffs from over driven guitars and piercing soaring vocals by singer Dan Brittain. Stu and Cam N sang backing vocals throughout and added an extra layered element to Silent Knight’s tracks. Paired with wicked guitar solos that brought many fist pumps and devil horns from the crowd. Silent Knight always look like they are having a lot of fun on stage, doing what they love best. This includes fi*****ng each other’s instruments from time to time, or even wiping sweat off each other’s brow!
Shredding and ripping wicked guitar solos, complimented by their band mates keeping everyone on track! They rolled effortlessly from song to song with a pace so fast that it blurred the lines between one track ending and the next beginning. Special mention to Dan G, it is lovely to see a drummer (usually they are hidden) enjoying what they do so much as Dan did on Wednesday night, singing along as he drummed ferociously while the sweat poured off him!
There were clap alongs and sing alongs throughout the entire six-song set, ending on raucous cheers and applause from the crowd begging for more.
Setlist: Prelude, Black Rose, Masterplan, The Ravens Return, Create A New World, Full Force, Power Metal Supreme.
Silent Knight sufficiently warmed up the crowd, who were eagerly awaiting the main event, Swedish metal band Amaranthe, and they didn’t have long to wait! The eyes of the backdrop lit up, and a wicked light show followed as the band poured onto the stage with an incredible vigorous entrance. Amaranthe are comprised of three vocalists – Elize Ryd who sings these soaring ranges, hitting the high notes and the low notes with a voice that is fierce and powerful. Nils Molin, who sings with a beautiful warm tone and also hits the high notes, reminiscent of Iron Maiden’s own vocalist, and Mikael Sehlin, who sings the deep guttural growls and screamo-style vocals. Mikael is unable to join the band on this tour so instead Lost Society member Samy Elbanna has taken the growling and screaming charge. The band is also comprised of Olof Mörck on guitar and keys, who also plays for Swedish power metal band Dragonland. Olof actually asked Silent Knight to open this show as Stormrider had brought the band out in 2016, but Olof missed that tour due to Amaranthe commitments. Johan Andreassen plays bass and Morten Løwe Sørensen on drums.
If you like cinematic opera and Eurovision, and then you cross that with Swedish metal and hardcore, you have got Amaranthe. They are a band that likes to experiment, blending many metal styles, including heavy metal and hardcore, and it works so well in their favour! They made great use of the multi-level stage, which aided their layered and complex sound to be carried out into the crowd who were loving every second.
Their songs included heavy breakdowns, clap alongs and the crowd were eating up every bite and asking for extra servings! The three lead vocalists complimented each other beautifully, with each one taking the lead on separate songs, including a mixture of duets, and the different styles adding such a complexity to the tracks that was hard to ignore. Amaranthe are a band that leave you wanting more, glad that you witnessed something amazing and extraordinary, and sad that the set has finished and its time to go home.
