President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon has been deposed and is currently under house arrest following a coup in the central African country.
In a video message from an anonymous source, President Bongo expressed distress and called on his "friends all over the world to make noise" for help.
He mentioned that he and his family had been arrested, his son and wife were in different locations, and he was confined to his residence.
The military officers who carried out the coup announced that they were overturning the government. They dissolved "all the institutions of the republic" and declared the cancellation of the recent election results.
The officers' statement came after the national election authority had declared Bongo's victory in the recent election, where he received 64.27 percent of the vote for a third term.
The coup announcement occurred during an overnight curfew and an internet shutdown that had been imposed by Bongo's government during the election to prevent the spread of false information and potential violence.
The officer representing the coup said that the recent election didn't meet the conditions for a transparent and credible ballot, and they decided to put an end to the current regime in order to defend peace.
