XM Studios Magneto (Dawn of X) First Impressions
Like many collectors, I too was waiting on bated breath for the new XM Magneto statue. Based on these initial looks, all of which I think suck and are poor quality images, I don't hate it. I actually like it. But I don't love it and my anticipation from the teasers was built on loving it. What I do love is the concept. This is a victorious Magneto marching through a destroyed Sentinel, using remnants of the machine to create steps. It creates a much different demeanor than the majority of Magneto pieces that range from silent rage to uncontrollable rage. This is a calm and stoic rendition who is proud of his work, which I'm cool with, but also agree that XM including an additional portrait with some rage would benefit the versatility of the piece as it fits in a variety of collection themes. The flow of the cape is bonkers good; I love how its folding in on itself off to the side. The base and the concept are the least of my concerns with this statue, as those all fall in the sculpt of the character himself.
There are 3 areas where I feel the statue comes off unbalanced: the bulkiness of his armored areas, his body proportions and movement, and the paint. The base looks like a well-sculpted statue and the character looks more like an action figure. I love the modernized designs of his leg/arm gauntlets, belt, and collar. However, the collar and belt look way too big/thick on his body. That collar is jokingly large and overpowers his upper torso, which already looks as though it is proportioned too long. It could also just be the gaudy piece hanging from the collar halfway down his torso. The belt has a similar impact, looking way too thick on a body that is already very thick in muscle mass. It causes the characters body proportions to feel bloated. Besides the bulkiness, from these pictures, it doesn't look like the sculptor captured the twist in Magneto's abdomen and chest, rather, it just looks like his upper torso lifted and put back on his waist, just slightly twisted. His abdomen seems to blend into his back with very little differentiation between those regions and his obliques. He looks muscular in some areas, but strongman thick in others and it doesn't blend well. This also creates a strange lack of separation in the shoulder/armpit area and has the right arm looking like it's attached flatly to the body.
Lastly, I know that it is very likely s**t lighting, but the shading in the character's suit appears overlooked, particularly for a company that generally captures a modern take on characters. The paint for both headsculpts looks flat and void of any life/realism. Also, is there a slight lean to the body? That can be fixed in production, but a lot of collectors also expected to see a similar adjustment to the XM Cyclops screaming torso, but to no avail. The placement of his legs relative to each other also feel a bit too close to be stepping up onto a step, but that's really nitpicking.
