By the time I was in 5th grade, I made about $300 off of my YouTube content.

That $300 was EVERYTHING to me at the time. You know how when you’re a little kid and $20 felt like $100? And you couldn’t even FATHOM a big number like $1000? Now our rent is double that as adults 💀 lol but it’s so crazy to look back on this.

I had a YouTube channel where I made up stories with my webkinz and littlest pet shop toys. Beyond the stories, the video editing I did was rather intricate and intense for my age on windows movie maker.

I consider all of this the actual start of my content creation career! Everyone starts somewhere, and it’s so fun to look back on where your journey began. I truly had such a great time making those videos. I’d check back in on the account in high school and see comments asking when I’ll be back on YouTube, when I’ll be continuing the series and so on. It made me sad that I felt like I didn’t have time (and felt too old) to continue in this creative outlet.

Now, creating videos for social media platforms is my full time job, and I think the middle schooler who got a Sony handycam for Christmas one year would love to see this journey!

Customers are getting ad fatigue and craving more authenticity. ⚡️

If you’re solely focused on talking about the product (and yourself,) your customers will lose interest fast. Sell the results they will have. Sell the idea that having this product in their lives will improve their day to day.

As a consumer who is also in the UGC space, seeing the same style of ads IS exhausting, and often does not convince me without some core results to show.

1. Brand partnerships matter more - Build lasting partnerships with the right brands in your niche. They can provide a steady stream of income, with or without a massive following.

2. Niche expertise is valuable - If you have truly valuable expertise in a niche, brands will want to partner with you to create UGC even if you don't have a large following (yet). They value your knowledge and skills over follower count alone.

3. You can grow organically - Many UGC creators build their following organically over time through their partnerships and the quality content they produce. They don't need a huge initial audience to get started.

4. Referrals work - Once you produce great UGC for a few clients that delivers results, those happy clients will often refer you to their peers. This referral network can help you scale your business.

5. Followers are not guaranteed - Many influencers with massive followings struggle to monetize them effectively.

6. UGC is not posted to the creator's page - It is shared to the brand's page or used in their ads strategy.

1️⃣ UGC Beats Traditional Ads - Consumers are tuning out traditional ads at an alarming rate. User-generated content by everyday people remains one of the most trusted forms of marketing. Brands lacking UGC will suffer.

2️⃣ Social Algorithm Changes - Platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube continue to favor organic-looking UGC over structured, commercialized content in their algorithms. Brands not investing in UGC risk getting left behind.

3️⃣ The "Influencer" is Dead - The era of mega influencers is coming to an end. (I personally predict the fall of the Kardashians in 2024.) Brands are seeking out niche UGC partners who produce quality, authentic engagements at a lower cost. UGC experts will reign in 2024.

2️⃣ Personal style - Every creator brings their own personal flair, tone of voice, expertise and style to UGC. This distinctive perspective makes their content stand out from others.

3️⃣ The ability to adapt - Successful UGC creators continually adapt by experimenting with new types of content, platforms and formats to stay ahead of trends. This evolution keeps their work fresh.

4️⃣ Expertise levels vary - Not all UGC creators are at the same level, whether beginner or advanced. There are niche opportunities at every level for those who can build credibility within that segment.

As a freelancer, contractor, or solopreneur, you may be reluctant to self-promote and market yourself on social media. You worry it seems "braggy" or you don't want to come across the wrong way. But here are 3 reasons why not marketing yourself could hurt your business:

1️⃣ You become invisible - If you don't show up and share what you do, you become invisible to potential clients online. You miss out on opportunities.

2️⃣ Others don't know what you offer - If you're shy about promoting your services, how will people interested in hiring you even find out what you offer? You have to let people know.

3️⃣ You're competing with marketers - The people you're competing with for clients - other freelancers, agencies - they are branding themselves, promoting their work, and going after business. You have to do the same to keep up.

So here's what you can do:

✨ Share your expertise by writing posts about your industry. Demonstrate your knowledge and skills.

✨ Highlight successful projects and results you've delivered for clients. Show the impact of your work.

✨Promote new services or skills you've developed that could help potential clients. Focus on the value you provide.
