Second powership fully connected to GPL’s national grid - The second Power Ship, which is being rented by the Government to assist the Guyana Power and Light Company, has been connected to the national grid and is now supplying an additional 60 megawatts to the grid.

The Guyana Power and Light Company announced the successful connection yesterday. The ship is anchored in the Demerara River at Ruimveldt and is expected to remain there for the duration of the two-year rental agreement. The first power ship to be rented by the Government is anchored in the Berbice River, and has also been rented for a two-year period.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips toured the latest power ship to arrive on Sunday and expressed his confidence that it will do well in alleviating the many power supply problems being faced by GPL.

The Prime Minister has assured that there will be no blackouts over the Christmas holidays, now that the national grid is being supplied with the additional power it needed.

The Government and GPL have both said it was necessary to procure additional power as there is growth in demand across the country.

The administration, however, is placing its bets on its gas to energy project to fully address Guyana’s energy needs. The project is expected to come on stream in late 2025.
