Things I'm learning as I prepare to send this baby to print:

Lets be real, I can't begin to afford an ISBN😱😢 no idea it was so expensive or that in the US those numbers are only issued by one single private company! Calling all experts, do I really need one?

But so far the process has been much more doable! Making progress toward the finish line!

Our first release is a collection of 5-voice motets by renaissance composer Raphaela Aleotta. Read on to learn more about this too-long-overlooked composer!

Late 16th century Ferrara was a city devoted to music and the arts, flourishing under the keen patronage of Duke Alfonso II d’Este, patron to the famous Concerto delle Donne (a thread for another time) Alfonso’s appetite for musical excellence spread far beyond the walls of his own palace, and he encouraged the study and performance of music in the city’s convents.

In the convent of San Vito, there was “a rare organist beyond all belief... Suor Raffaella” whose musical skills were put to incredible use as a performer, composer, and director. The daughter of a gifted architect and engineer employed by the Este family, Raphaela received an excellent education, and her talent for music was clear from an early age.

The musicians at San Vito provided an ideal vehicle for Raphaela’s musical prowess. Contemporary musician Hercule Bottrigari describes attending a performance by the nuns of San Vito “it appeared to me that the persons who ordinarily participated in this concert were not human, bodily creatures, but were truly angelic spirits.”

The ensemble at San Vito included wind, string, and brass instruments, and singers of remarkable vocal range: two sopranos, two female tenors, and according to Artusi a “singular and astonishing” female bass. Under Raphaela’s direction, the ensemble was described by Artusi as “the most excellent, unified, and well-proportioned ensemble that Italy possesses.”

In 1593 Raphaela Aleotta published a collection of motets for 5, 7, 8 and 10 voices. Her compositions are consummate examples of late 16th century polyphony, balancing lyricism and elegant vocal lines with powerful imagery and sometimes surprising turns of dissonance.

Appetite whetted after reading all that? Learn more about our new editions of her 5-voice motets at dulcamarapress.com.
