Crochet teacher Eva Pacheco from Spain and her students knitted sun shades from recycled fabric.
Prior to that, outdoor canopies made of plastic were installed in her city. Now they are replaced by products, on the creation of which Pacheco worked with a group of her students. The work of knitting lace "bedspreads" has continued over the past three years.
Due to the hot climate in Spain, city streets need reliable protection from the scorching sun. Usually plastic awnings were used for this purpose. They make life somewhat easier for the Spaniards on hot summer days. The temperature in the middle of the day can exceed 30 degrees, but it gets a little cooler at night.
New awnings made from recycled fabric have appeared in the town of Alhaurin de la Torre. Thus, the city authorities decided to find an alternative to the old plastic awnings, which can hardly be called environmentally friendly. Plastic is a huge environmental problem, and today many people know how slowly it degrades naturally. Therefore, people around the world strive to reduce as much as possible the number of plastic products that they use in everyday life.
Three years ago, the city authorities began cooperation with knitting teacher Eva Pacheco, who received an order to create new awnings. Recycled fabric was chosen as the material for their production. The idea turned out to be very successful, and for three years Pacheco, together with a dozen of her students, was engaged in the implementation of this project.
At the moment, the total area of crocheted blankets is 500 square meters. They were used to decorate the city, hanging bright banners over the streets. Wicker canopies have a unique pattern and invariably attract the attention of the townspeople and tourists visiting it.
According to the city councilor, this project not only reflects respect for the environment, but also promotes the development of local trade. The unique crochet awnings made by the talented needlewoman and her assistants have already become a local landmark.
