Truck stops offer many essential services for drivers, but don’t hesitate to spend a night away from the usual route to enjoy a morning of fresh mountain air.

Dakota and I absolutely love waking up to beautiful landscapes outside the window. There are plenty of places to walk and explore, and it’s also beneficial for your mental health. Sometimes, it’s a much-needed break from the rat race and a chance to slow down and unwind...
To my dismay, Dakota knows how to operate the windows, so she never misses a chance to catch a breath of fresh air! 😂..

After dropping off my set of trailers at the Seattle FedEx hub, I had the following day free due to the reduced freight movement during the holidays in 2021...

Before departing, I conducted thorough research, checking truck restrictions and using Google Maps to find a parking spot within walking distance. I only had a bobtail, how hard could this be?..
The roads into the mountains were narrow. I was constantly scanning for truck restricting signs and low bridges. I was white knuckling that steering wheel like it was my first day on Donner Pass.

With my heart pounding and a knot in my stomach, I eventually made my way up those winding mountain roads to a small parking lot with a steep curve that I doubted I could manage with the light load on my drives. After almost tipping over and spinning my drive tires, I successfully entered the lot...

Dirty truck. Fluffy pup. The snow never fails to cheer this pup up. The excitement and energy exuded by this girl can be felt on so many levels.

In the winter time parking on these docks that aren’t plowed poses many challenges for us, but all Dakota sees is snow.

Moving our tandems with a lack of traction can make this a bit of a circus act. Today I managed to find a more bare spot in the snow and was able to move them without chaining. In other instances I’ll chain at least one tandem tire to help grip the ground.
…
“Tandems” in this case is referring to the tires on my trailer that have an ability to slide to different positions on the trailer.
…
We need to move tandems at certain customers in order to provide safety and stability for those unloading (so the trailer doesn’t tip down towards them every time they drop a forklift in and out), OR in this case to help match the dock height.
…
Either way this is always an interesting problem to try and solve in these conditions, but I’m always in a good mood about it thanks to Dakota keeping spirits high.

There is a lot of snow in the western US right now. I know there are always a lot of new drivers and several drivers afraid of the snow out here.

Give yourself more time to travel and please learn to chain. You may never want to chain and that’s okay, but you may run into a situation where you have no choice. It’s better to be prepared. Look into for chains (NOT SPONSORED, just obsessed) ⛓️

Remember that heavier loads are better in the snow. If you are nervous or light and drive slow try to pull off every once in a while if you have a conga line 💃🏼🕺🏽of vehicles behind you. You’ll avoid road rage and drivers passing you in less than optimal conditions.

When you stop roll your tires slowly in the snow to cool them down before settling in for the night. This way you don’t melt yourself into a hole. 🕳️

AND most importantly make yourself a snowman on the side of the road for others to pass by and enjoy. I hope he brought many smiles to travelers. 🧳

We are all living in the present moment, not knowing if we have any more time beyond what we are experiencing right now. I shudder at the cliché, but the future is never promised.

I find it unwise to ignore the fact that our time here is limited. We only have the sand that already exists in our hourglass, and this sand will continue to fall regardless of our inattention to it.

Maybe this is a call to be more mindful. Time will pass us by whether we take advantage of it or not.

There is no “right time”. There is only the time we make. The time we set aside, the time we take.

There are so many missed opportunities in the paths not taken. Choose to take that dusty trail and see where it leads. You may be pleasantly surprised at the waterfall waiting for you at the end.

Take a chance. Take a break from the routine. Take all the opportunities you can on the paths you usually pass up. It may just change your life in the best unexpected ways.

It’s events like these that make me wonder where has the trucker code gone? Just a general where-with-all to know to slow down before passing an accident scene. I had many trucks passing this after it just occurred at 60+ mph. 🚛💨❄️

I’m appalled at the general lack of awareness this community is experiencing. I was lucky enough to have been able to not only protect the scene with my vehicle, but also create a buffer so that no other vehicles would barrel into the wreckage.

I was eventually instructed by law enforcement to create a barrier across the entire road after they arrived to stop traffic completely.

A truckers hazards have multiple meanings, but it all boils down to “CAUTION” 🚧

A CB is helpful here, but not all drivers have them. AND not all that have them turn them on. Keep your head on a swivel and don’t be complacent. Our freight needs to arrive on time and intact, but our respect for others and the road should come before that.

Winter is here. Time to strap up. The work doesn’t stop. We push on. Together we brave the snow and ice. If you are out here with me, I see you. But listen, here is my game plan:

If you pass another driver in the snow covered lane let’s try not to go Mock 2. It makes it more likely for you to lose control and blinds other drivers with your snow drift.

Distance is ASTRONOMICALLY important. Stay out of my bubble and I’ll stay out of yours. If I lose control I don’t want to take you with me, and vice versa. We can wink at each other from afar 😉

All of our equipment is different. Some of us can handle the loss of traction better than others, and we need to be mindful that not everyone has the same experience or tools. Let’s be kind, patient, and helpful to other drivers. Mostly just stay away from each other. Like, please. 😂

I rarely share my “out of the truck” experiences. There is so much I covet when it comes to my personal space and privacy.

I’m taking a chance sharing with you a piece of me I have managed to hide from the public eye for quite sometime.

Much of my time outside of the truck is very useful when it comes to coping with the mental struggles that come with such a high paced, relentless, isolating job like trucking.

These pictures capture 3 separate occasions I’ve visited this particular secret stop. I use this spot to not only escape trucking, but also the shackles in my mind. It’s rarely trafficked and perfectly hidden close to the road side, making for an easy escape.

Allowing yourself to take a break from not only the cab of the truck, but the busy sounds of the road, people, as well as other extraneous noises that are pervasive across truck stops is beyond beneficial.
…
There is something I find so soothing in the middle of the desert so far away from the hussle and bustle. It is okay to need reminding that you deserve peace. You deserve to relax. You deserve relief from the pressure.

Find your escape what ever it is, and where ever it may be. Do forget to care for yourself. You cannot serve anyone else if you don’t first turn inward.

A clear dark sky is one of the most beautiful soul, body, and mind experiences I’ve had. I’ve laid so many nights outside my truck in the desert sand staring up at the sky.

It is humbling to lay under such a large infinite sky with so much mystery and possibility. All I can do is lay still and appreciate that I may never know the answers to my questions. But it is striking a chord in my souls nonetheless.

There is something incredibly sad about watching the sun set on a part of your life. There is nothing you can do but slowly watch it fade to black.
But there is hope in that darkness. The sun will meet us again, in time.
We just need to brave the darkness for a little while.
We are all fighting our own battles. My heart goes out to you and yours. 🖤

Dakota and I often like to just stay still and take in what is around us. The abandoned mining town of Belleville NV hasn't had residents since around 1920. The exact date is unknown. https://youtu.be/kcuKEGSZI-E

Taking in bits of history like this around the country is one of my most favorite things to do. Not only that, exploring an abandoned town that is so far away from any civilization is so incredibly humbling when you find yourself alone our there in the rubble the silence is so loud.

This keeps me grounded and reminds me how much I don't recognize myself in the fast pace world I often subject myself to. Taking time to truly feel what it's like to be alone is so awakening.

Don't forget the unique existence YOU give to this world.
