Roads sound like they are pretty bad around the River Valley. Some main roads may not be as bad as others but if you don't have to get out, then stay at home! We are hanging right at freezing or under so maybe we can avoid power outages as long as we shoot up above freezing and a melt off occurs. Once we go above freezing we are projected over 3 inches of rain this week so it's going to be some cold rainy days for the foreseeable future. But hey we should see temps in the 50's later in the week!

22/01/2024

The moisture appears to be ahead of schedule tonight and it’s definitely cold enough to instantly freeze. Be sure to charge up phones and any portable chargers and make sure you have your generators or heaters ready to go in case of any power outages. We’re still looking at a quarter inch to half inch of ice and possibly more depending on conditions. Stay safe out there Herd!

Let us see the low temps from around the River Valley! Hector Observatory observed a low of 4 and a -9 wind chill. Linker Mountain Observatory got down to 0. There are also rumors of another wave coming in on Thursday that could hinder any thaw out and next week there could be a system bringing in ice... Will update when we can about those!

14/01/2024

Conditions at the Hector Observatory as of 5 PM: Little over 2 inches of snow on the ground and a crisp 14 degrees. Have heard reports from ARDOT that roads are sticking big time in places and proving difficult to clean off.

Fresh pow at the Dardanelle observatory. Main roads still in decent shape

Snow is in the area! Let us know if y’all are seeing some reach the ground so far. Reports have dialed back on the prediction but we still should see 3 inches if not more and will disrupt any travel plans to start the week. Stay safe and stay warm today and be looking for any potential live reports from the Herd!👀

13/01/2024

Once we go below freezing this evening, we will not return to above freezing until Wednesday at the earliest. This will be a dangerous weather event and predictions for snow are all over the place! We will have a report out tonight or in the morning for yall when we get further info. This looks like the real deal, so for those yearning for live reports I’m sure you will be pleased this coming week. Most importantly, stay safe out there Herd!

Today will be a cold day with rain and thunderstorms and intense wind gusts. Cold air is coming into the state and we could see some snow tomorrow if the air is cold enough. I'm afraid right now we're just going to have a cold rain. Batten down the hatches with this wind and fix something warm to eat this week because this weekend the big Arctic cold front arrives and we could see highs in the 20's with lows potentially in single digits. Snow chances are up in the air, but I am seeing more and more chatter that we potentially have a good chance of accumulation in the River Valley!

05/01/2024

Snowflakes have now arrived finally to the Hector observatory. Reports all across the River Valley and much more coming from the west. Roads still appear to be clear and as long as temps hang at 35 it will be fine. Still a nice sight to see. Send in any pictures you have!

There appears to be a chance of snow beginning Friday morning early. At this time, it seems to be a mix of snow and rain beginning around 5 AM. Higher elevations will be affected more, and it all depends on what temperatures will be throughout the morning. Right now it is forecasted to be a high of 38 so it is a toss up on what will actually happen. Could be a messy commute to school and work around the River Valley. If temps increase the rain should wash away any accumulation along road ways for later Friday afternoon. Extended forecasts are showing major precipitation and Thunderstorms coming Monday along with strong winds, so be aware. Herd mobilization isn't in play at the exact moment in time, but will be monitoring any snowfall in the area.

27/06/2023

I know the Herd has been dealing with storms lately and some may still be cleaning up but there appears to be more in store. A system is coming from the west that looks to hit in the next couple hours so be ready once again. Be safe out there!

A line of heavy weather is approaching from the west. A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the area. Lightning, high winds, and possible hail could be associated with this line of storms. The warning goes to 9am. Stay safe.

Tornado Watch this morning until 12:00pm
Stay Weather Alert

05/04/2023

New reports are showing that the cold front has stalled out a lot of the movement, and estimates are showing it not arriving to the river valley until 7-10 tomorrow morning. It appears we may be in the clear for any middle of the night surprises as of right now, but now morning commutes could be interesting.

04/04/2023

Tonight could get a little rough in the weather department. We could experience severe thunderstorms with large hail and high winds. Also there is an enhanced chance of powerful long track tornado super cell storms. Ultimately there will be a line of storms push through with high winds an isolated tornadoes. Begin to prepare now. Pick up or weigh down anything that might be blown around in your yard. Put your vehicle under a shelter or at least cover windshield from possible hail damage. Charge phones and battery lights in case power goes out. And have a place prepared to shelter in case we do have damaging weather tonight. Keep an eye on the weather through the media so that you will not be caught by surprise. Also it doesn’t hurt to start praying for the Lord to put a cover of protection over our area. We will be making reports as needed tonight with the latest watches and warnings. BE SAFE!

POPE COUNTY SHELTERS in case of severe weather threat tonight:

04/04/2023

Everyone needs to be on high alert tonight. The River Valley looks to be right in the line of these storms coming late tonight around 1 or so. The radar tracks I’ve seen have the most severe tracking just north of us in very north Pope County, but as we know that can always change. It could really get fired up to our North East, but the timing could be very bad. Make sure your phones are charged, have a way of getting weather alerts, and a plan in place to seek shelter if need be! Stay safe out there Herd, we will be sure to update as the day goes along.

Smedley the Squirrel has come out of his hole this morning. His belly is hairy! Six more weeks of winter!

01/02/2023

Linker Mountain Weather Observatory daily news release for February 1st, 2023.
Temperature right now remains below freezing at 29 degrees.
Reports are coming in that very little melting is occurring around the area. Some roads are being reported as covered and slick while others are partially clear with slick spots. If you have to be out today please use caution.
Wish I could say we are out of the woods but we are not. Another round of frozen precipitation will be moving into the area later this afternoon. This round could possibly be the worst we have seen. Looking to be more of a freezing rain and ice event tonight. We are currently in a Winter Weather Advisory, but the counties just to our south are in Winter Storm Warning. Being this close to the other warned area it could get rough tonight. A lot will depend on temperatures as moisture arrives. Freezing rain and sleet will be the primary weather tonight. Be on guard as we get later into the afternoon and early evening. Stay in unless you absolutely have to be out.
If advisory or warnings change we will get them out as soon as possible.
Snowcow Mike
