During the early 20th century in Paris, authors like Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald — plus artists including Pablo Picasso — convened for creative conversation at the home of writer and LGBTQ+ icon Gertrude Stein. If it weren’t for her salons, it’s possible these literary greats would never have put their best ideas to paper.

But before she became the organizer of these visionary rendezvous, Stein had her heels in Pittsburgh. There’s a plaque outside 850 Beech Avenue where she was born in 1874. Her family left what was, at the time, Allegheny City just six months later — but Pittsburgh still claims her.

This Feb. 3, her 150th birthday, the City of Pittsburgh will proclaim it “Gertrude Stein Day” at on Galveston Avenue, just steps away from her birthplace.

Phil says we’re going to have an early Spring! 🌸

Gobbler’s K**b in Punxsutawney was teeming with fans of Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog today, eager to see the critter’s weather prediction.

The holiday’s roots go back to European agriculture traditions, marking the midpoint between the winter solstice and spring equinox — but it has since taken on a life (and lore) of its own.

Larry Scirotto is our city's first openly gay police chief. And while he says that's something he's deeply proud of, it's not something he's spent much time discussing. Today, that changes. Hear his take on q***r representation in the Pittsburgh bureau, why he decided to come out when he did, and how he hopes his identities — gay and biracial — will inform his tenure as chief.

When Chief Scirotto's promotion was announced, many on social media flocked to the comments to celebrate the representation, but not without critique. The term 'ACAB' or "all cops are bad," continued to pop up.

When asked about community relations, Chief Scirotto said:

"That's, that's a challenge, right? It's an opportunity. It's an opportunity to make inroads where we have not focused many of our efforts. You have to be intentional about engaging communities where they're at.

There have been abuses throughout history with policing in the LGBTQ+ community. [Outreach] has to be intentional. It just won't happen. We change the narrative by our actions and not our words."

Big news. Take care of yourselves and your neighbors, today and every day 💛

A few hours ago, a jury ruled that the man behind the synagogue shooting in 2018 should be put to death. The gunman was found guilty earlier this summer on 63 federal counts, including 11 counts of a hate crime that resulted in death.

City Cast’s Megan Harris and Mallory Falk dropped a short bonus episode (link in bio) discussing the ruling and what comes next. Additional sentencing is coming soon and we think there’s more to say, so please stay tuned to our feeds next week.

In past years, the basement at Smithfield United Church of Christ opened its doors to those in need of a place to stay in the winter, but as homelessness surged, Allegheny County kept the shelter open indefinitely.

A community quickly developed among folks who slept there or hung out on the church steps, but neighbors started objecting.

The iconic red-and-white Iron City Beer sign atop Mt. Washington was taken down last week and replaced by a black-and-gold display that reads: “IC Light. Cheer Pittsburgh. Drink Pittsburgh.”

Did you know that back in 1938 — according to Pittsburgh Brewing Company — it was actually the “World’s Largest Neon Sign”? It was 650-feet long, and each letter was more than 30-feet tall.

The glow cascaded over the smoky city, and it even featured a clock and beer glasses that filled from the bottom. How do you feel about the new Iron City Beer sign?

West Homestead is tucked between the borough of Homestead and the Pittsburgh neighborhood of New Homestead in the Allegheny Valley along the Monongahela River — also known as Steel Valley from its iron mill days. Homestead Steel Works operated there from 1881 to 1986 and was the site of one of the most impactful labor disputes in U.S. history — the Homestead strike of 1892.

This area was also home base for the Homestead Grays, a professional Negro league baseball team formed in 1912 with stars like future Hall of Famer Josh Gibson. has an awesome collection on the legacy of Negro League Baseball in Pittsburgh.

For the past eight years, Squirrel Hill genealogist Tammy Hepps has also been researching the history of Jewish immigrants in Homestead through “Homestead Hebrews,” a community often historically underrepresented. She even did some digging into Pittsburgh native Jeff Goldblum’s family tree. Mark your calendar for July 13, Jeff Goldblum day in Pittsburgh!

What would you do for a Klondike Bar? I bet you can’t read that famous slogan without hearing it ring in your mind!

The advertising jingle started in 1982, and the ice cream brand is still capitalizing on its prominence across generations — Klondike is hosting a nationwide contest through July 16 and they're coming to Pittsburgh this weekend to help find the most creative answers.

The story behind the famous treat begins in the early 1900s with William Isaly and his dairy company.

Back then, you could buy a Klondike for 10 cents each. And some of the early flavors were surprising — standards like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, but also cherry, maple, and grape.

Learn more Klondike history and all the contest details at the link in our bio. And then tell us what you think — can Pittsburgh claim the Klondike?!

29/06/2023

Pittsburgh has been proudly hosting fans of fur culture for close to two decades. Anthrocon, the annual convention celebrating anthropomorphic animal characters through art, costume, writing, and more, is estimated to bring 10,000 furries Downtown. Here are five ways to respectfully furry watch today through Sunday.

🍻 Share Your Table
Condado & Scarpino share a sidewalk along 10th Street with the Westin, where Anthrocon is based. Call ahead or get there early to reserve your spot, or pick an outdoor table along Penn or Liberty avenues.

📣 Be Chatty!
Most people love to tell you about their passions, and folks with fursonas are no different. Most people put their preferred name right on their convention badge. Out-of-towners especially are often excited to hear what's going on in Pittsburgh while they're in tahn.

💵 Support a Furry-Friendly Business
There will be food and drink specials Downtown all weekend, including grub served from dog bowls and bevvies with extra long straws. Show your appreciation by spending your money at a spot doing our city proud.

🎉 Get in the Game
Check out the convention itself, the fursuit parade on Saturday at 2 p.m., or other events like a sightseeing Gateway Clipper river cruise. We have a longer list in our Hey Pittsburgh newsletter!

💛 Be Kind
Furries love Pittsburgh. As Mister Rogers would say, be a good neighbor and love them back 😻

Earlier this week, five people set off on a submersible run by OceanGate Expeditions to visit the Titanic wreckage. Yesterday, we learned they all died. And at least one Pittsburgher knew the risks involved.

Professor Alex Waibel, an expert in speech translation systems with , is proud to call himself an explorer, but today he’s mourning.

One of the big challenges to deep sea exploration is how vessels like Titan communicate with would-be support above water, and Dr. Waibel had been working on a way to solve that. Last summer, he tested his technology with OceanGate, and he planned to return in a few months. Host Megan Harris connected with him from Germany, where he was waiting to hear the fates of his friends and former colleagues alongside everyone else. Click the link below to listen.

There aren’t many places where you can feel like you’re in country woods but still reside in the city. But then there's Observatory Hill, aka Perry North in the North Side. The neighborhood features stately homes — some over 100 years old and dating back to when the neighborhood was founded 1894. The area was once part of Allegheny City, which was annexed into Pittsburgh in 1907.

🌳 Go, See, Do
Play in Riverview Park, the 259-acre densely wooded green space with trails, a pool, playgrounds, shelters, and ball fields.

Another shining star? The Allegheny Observatory was one of the first major modern astronomical research institutions in the world. In 1869, the observatory created the Allegheny Time Service, which is believed to be the first systematic time distribution to railroads and cities; it’s also the home of the modern time system. While the space is now mostly used for research, it is occasionally open for tours.

Want to be a nebby neighbor? Buy tickets for the Observatory Hill House Tour this Sunday, June 25 from 12 to 5 p.m. This year’s showcase features the unique stories of more than 15 homes and businesses, plus drink samples and food trucks. And if you buy a $40 VIP ticket, you can get an exclusive tour of the observatory.

🥪 Eat & Drink
on Perrysville Avenue sells classic handhelds and unique takes like the French toast breakfast sandwich. Better yet, grab a sando-to-go for a picnic in the park.

Cars were essential in the early 20th century — not just to get Black folks from A to B, but as a key part of establishing mobility, freedom, and a place in the middle class.
