(𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥)

There’s something about cooking meals from scratch that feels oddly exciting. The uncertainty of how it’ll turn out—the taste, the texture—and just experimenting with measurements until I hit the right timpla makes it kind of a thrill.

To give a bit of background, I only started cooking real homemade meals last year. Before that, I was honestly only good at cooking rice (sinaging) and whipping up instant foods, especially Pancit Canton and canned goods like spicy sardines (which I’d just open and transfer straight to a bowl). It wasn’t until a few months before my internship in Camarines Sur that I dared to pick up a knife and take cooking seriously. And by “seriously,” I mean at home—still no culinary courses or vocational classes under my belt. Learning and wanting to do more than ready-made meals was my way of preparing to live alone in a city far from home for nearly three months.

And yeah, cooking takes A LOT of work—prepping the ingredients, the actual cooking, plating, maybe a quick documentation moment, and then the dreaded dishwashing phase… super tiring, for sure. But somehow, the process relaxes me. Cooking has become my little escape whenever things get overwhelming, when my brain feels like it’s ‘erroring’—just like Bae Seokryu once mentioned. Even when I don’t nail the dish on the first try (and trust me, there are plenty of those), it still gives me that spark to try again until I’m satisfied. It’s a challenge that leaves me tired but happy, in the best way.

Cooking isn’t my first love. My heart has always been in photography and the cinematic/technical stuff, which keeps me busy in a creative, fulfilling way. But there’s something about the appetizing look of a meal that makes me wonder, “How do they make this taste so good?” I always try to guess the ingredients based on flavors I’ve tasted before. It wasn’t the pressure of “adulting” that pushed me into cooking—it was pure curiosity.

For now, I’m just enjoying the process, trying to improve bit by bit without putting pressure on myself. That way, I won’t lose the fun and joy I’ve found in it. And who knows, maybe someday I’ll finally master that secret recipe that’s been teasing my tastebuds all along. I prolly might even be able to cook a little fusion of some things that'd possibly make me ✨Financially Stable✨ But let's save that for later and not spoil things yet...mahirap na, baka ma-jinx 🫣🤪
