Honoured to get a mention by Naomi & Her Handsome Devils, whose fabulous live version of "Love" I chose as the final track in my first podcast.
I also played the song last Tuesday at my first live DJ gig since pre-pandemic days, which felt amazing! 🧡

Working on my fourth show and came across this wonderful photo from an article on the New York Times website.

Thank you to whoever recently left a lovely comment on my Mixcloud page, I’ve not been able to work out who you are from your username except that you’re a Lindy Hopper because of your reference to rock-steps!

If you’re the kind of person who likes to listen to things in order, and haven’t yet tuned in to my second show, here’s a reminder, as episode 3 should be out in the next week â˜ș

Naomi & Her Handsome Devils were the band I featured at the end of my first radio show, with their live recording of Love.
Here they are at the 2019 edition of The Snowball, one of the highlights of the international swing dancing calendar, which usually takes place every year in Stockholm over several days, culminating in a big New Year’s Eve party.
It’s an event on many swing dancers’ wish list. This would have been filmed just before the world starting locking down due to Covid.
Performing here are four brilliant dancers: Frida Segerdahl, Alice Mei, Skye Humphries and Remy Kouakou Kouame.
The song, Gone So Long, is included on the band’s latest album, Live at the Uptown Swingout.

The amazing Chick Webb, who featured in episode one, and is the subject of an excellent documentary if you get a chance to see it.

Did you know that bandleader and drummer extraordinaire Chick Webb overcame the challenge of physical disability to emerge as one of the stellar performers of the Big Band era?

Webb showed an early talent for drumming despite being constrained from infancy by a deformed spine that hunched his back and restricted his growth. (His adult height barely exceeded four feet.)

He acquired his first drum set by the age of twelve and progressed rapidly from street musician to dance band drummer. In 1926, after settling in Harlem, Webb launched his career as a bandleader. Within a year he and his orchestra were performing at the Savoy Ballroom, where they would vanquish formidable rivals such as Benny Goodman in the Savoy’s storied battles of the bands.

After recruiting Ella Fitzgerald to serve as his band’s vocalist, Webb shared in his young singer’s success in 1938 when her recording “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” became a nationwide hit.

Just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone who listened to the first show, it ended up peaking at no.4 in the global swing charts on Mixcloud which was a wonderful and unexpected bonus!

Not quite sure how that has happened... maybe swing music isn’t such a big genre on the platform. Anyway, thanks so much to everyone for listening, it has made me very happy!
