Pearl Jam - Ten (2017 Reissue)

My daughter found this in the record shop in town and bought it for me because she’s amazing. (I gave her the money for it but it was a wonderful gesture)

I often say I don’t trust anyone who claims to be a massive Pearl Jam fan and Ten is their favourite album and while I stand by that it is a really good record.

The problem comes with time…I remember being excited for every PJ album release and each one is special for different reasons.

I guess now that it’s all available so easily people can just move onto the next thing so easily there’s less commitment to spending time with a record because it might be two years before the next one.

Or maybe I’m just a hipster who loves Riot Act!!

Olivia Rodrigo - Sour (Pink Vinyl)

The girl started her collection this year with this from
I think it’s a good record but my 14 year old kid absolutely loves it and I’m pretty sure that she’s the target audience, not a 44 year old bearded man still clinging onto a tiny shred of relevance and credibility (in my kids eyes at least)

Everyone knows this album but the record is a great thing to look at on the 12” scale and that’s half the point of buying vinyl isn’t it???

Album of the Day
Riot Act ~ Pearl Jam

I’m definitely in a minority but Riot Act is a top 3 Pearl Jam album in my book and I’ve said many times that I don’t trust anyone who says they “LOVE” Pearl Jam and Ten is their favourite record…yes it’s great and everyone knows it but it’s far from their best work

For me this album finds the band working through their grief after Rosskilde and they feel closer together than ever before..it’s the us against the world vibes that made Vitalogy and No Code such great records and Riot Act is a beautiful, if ragged, cousin to those albums.

I haven’t had a chance to listen yet but it gets todays title for the gleeful noises the kid was making down the phone when telling me her vinyl and cassette combo was waiting for her at home.

Reminded me of getting home from school and finding that Skeltons had phoned cos my order of Vitalogy/Troublegum/Holy Bible had come in

Oh to be a kid and that excited again!!

The Divine Comedy ~ A Short Album about Love

Not a lot to say…it’s a cool little record and exactly as described.

While everyone was getting excited about Song 2 and Beetlebum and Stand by Me and whatever else, Neil Hannon just crooned some simple and elegant songs of love and sometimes… that’s all you need.

Album of the Day…
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit ~ Live at the Ryman

I’m surprised it took this long for Isbell to make the “album of the day” post.

2nd sh*tty day on the bounce so I revert to old favourites…I tried listening to other stuff but nothing would stick so I had a Jason Isbell marathon…about 5 albums back to back

I hadn’t listened to this live album much so I finished off the day with this in my ears on a hot and sweaty bus…sunglasses on so the world doesn’t see the feelings and get all uncomfortable at public emotions.

I know I’ve been banging on about him all summer but seriously…this guy is special, like really special.
Just need a UK tour soon and I’ll be a very happy Robbie!!

Album of the Day
Nirvana ~ Live at Reading 92

Had a pretty sh*tty day waiting in for locksmiths but that’s ok I can get some recordings done as long as the water board don’t find a leak between my stopcock and the road and choose today to dig up my front path…bugger!

I put this on in the name of research for the Nirvana shows I’m currently writing for later this year..it’ll be a standalone 6 episode series where me and a massive Nirvana nerd can get deep into the weeds.

No spoilers but this recording of an incendiary performance is as close as you’ll get to seeing Nirvana live. It’s a reminder, as we get closer to 30 years without Kurt, of just how vibrant and vital and fu***ng important his voice and his work was.

Each show he curates a playlist of some his favourite bands and artists from a particular town or city renowned for it’s contributions to music…From New York to Nashville, Seattle to Sydney, we travel the world through his record collection. We may also go to Hull.

In todays show we visit Atlanta, Georgia. Home to the greats of Hip Hop, R&B and Soul. We drive right past them to hang out with some college bands from Athens, Southern troubadours and a bunch of Metalheads.

Album of the Day
Songdog ~ Last Orders at Harry’s Bar

I think it was 2015 when I was introduced to Songdog. On a balmy Isle of Wight Saturday afternoon at the Rhythmtree festival, we were sat on a sofa in a tent with the kids (all under 10) when a cool looking dude in a hat walks onto the stage, says something like “this might not be great for the little ones” and then just absolutely mesmerises me for almost an hour.

This record is a real showcase for Lyndon Morgans lyrics/poetry…they’re beautiful and melancholy, they speak of love and loss, the thrill of the chase and the importance of a good woman (or a bad one???)

There’s an honesty and integrity to the words that can only come from a life filled with experience and focusing on life’s important things…Sex, Death and Country Music

It’s a really beautiful record..get it in your ears!
