It's National Forest Week!

The spectacular 193 million acres of our country's National Forests and Grasslands stretch from Alaska’s snow-capped peaks to Florida’s lush longleaf pine forests. Red rock deserts, sprawling grasslands, hardwood forests, and fascinating history await you when you visit National Forests and Grasslands. They are places for rest, rejuvenation, and adventure that fill us with awe for the natural world.

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres of Wisconsin's Northwoods. The USDA Forest Service manages the land for multiple uses including forestry, wildlife habitat, recreation, harvesting of forest products, fisheries, and wilderness and natural areas.

Managed by the USDA Forest Service, national forests and grasslands host 170 million visits every year.

Did you know 7 in 10 Americans are within a 2-hour drive of a National Forest or Grassland? You can find an area near you by clicking here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/

RHINELANDER, Wis., July 3, 2024 – Sections of Forest Road (FR) 2112 (Bonita Road) in Oconto County will be closed to vehicle traffic from July 8, 2024 until July 12, 2024 so that one culvert can be replaced to accommodate aquatic organism passage.

FR 2112 will be closed between Weso Creek Road and McComb Lake Road. This section of road is located in the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

McComb Lake remains accessible. From the north, take County Road W to McComb Lake Road.

A map of the restricted area is provided for clarity. USDA Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps are available online for visitors to reference to identify alternative routes. The maps are located online here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/cnnf/maps-pubs. While the section of road is temporarily closed, USDA Forest Service officials encourage travelers to bring along a paper map or other navigational resource, and plan for extra time that might be needed.

Exemptions to the prohibited motorized activity include any federal, state, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty and persons with a special use authorization or other USDA Forest Service authorization specifically exempting them from the effect of the closure.

Just In: The Wendelin Smokey Bear portraits just shipped from the Grey Towers National Historic site and are officially on their way to us here in the Wisconsin Northwoods! The portraits of Smokey Bear will be on loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library in Washington, D.C. for a special exhibition! The public will be able to view the portraits for free at the Pioneer Park Historical Complex (https://rhinelanderpphc.com/) July 2-7, 2024.

This special exhibition will call attention to fire safety during one of the busiest recreation weekends of the season. The portraits are also being brought to Wisconsin in celebration of Smokey Bear’s milestone 80th birthday.

An Opening Reception will be held at the Pioneer Park Historical Complex on Tuesday, July 2, 5 to 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the general public. There will be activities for all ages.

• Test your Smokey Bear and fire safety knowledge in the Quiz Game.
• Make a Birthday Card for Smokey Bear.
• View recently digitized vintage Smokey Bear films from the National Agricultural Library.
• Enter the Birthday Desserts Competition: https://tinyurl.com/bdfx4wrv.

To tie in with the Wisconsin Department of Tourism’s Top Chef Wisconsin-inspired theme for 2024, which is “Culinary,” (https://tinyurl.com/3mz2n3sn) the opening night reception in Rhinelander will feature a special Smokey Bear birthday dessert competition. Information about how to enter the contest is available online, here: https://tinyurl.com/bdfx4wrv.

Legendary USDA Forest Service artist Rudolph (Rudy) Wendelin created the 19 portraits of Smokey Bear, and more, from 1977 through 1995. Wendelin worked for the USDA Forest Service as an illustrator beginning in 1933 and was the mastermind behind Smokey Bear’s signature ranger hat and blue jeans. Thanks to Wendelin’s art, Smokey Bear’s message “Only YOU can prevent wildfires” has prevailed through generations.

The Wendelin Smokey Bear collection will be in Rhinelander midway through a year-long road show that is traveling throughout the U.S. So far, the portraits have been displayed at Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument; Smokey Bear Historical Park,
Grey Towers National Historic Site, and more.

In addition to the special hours for the opening reception, the portraits can be viewed during hours of operation of the Pioneer Park Historical Complex, which are:
Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday 12 to 4 p.m.
*Closed on July 4, 2024 in observance of Independence Day.
Registration is not required for the exhibition or reception.
