Northwoods News Luminaries • Joe Hovel
Our recent story on Joe Hovel (https://www.northwoodsnews.com/joehovel-northwoodsconservationist/) and his memoir "From Barbells to Spruce Grouse – a 50-Year Journey of Land Conservation" gave us the opportunity to meet a true Northwoods Luminary.
In Joe's words, "It is my hope that this writing can inspire other people to do something. I don't expect everyone to do anything I've done… or even anything similar. Not everybody even thinks that the methods I used are even probably realistic in a lot of ways. Some of them were maybe a little off the wall.
There's a lot of people around here that are much more qualified than I am, and I would like to see them do more... There are resources in the Northwoods that are incredible, and they're being seriously diminished every year... We're losing what benefits us most."

Visit the Eagle River Main Street Program page for information on ordering a 2022 Ice Castle Snow Globe. 🏰
Watch this video at your peril! Dan Dumas, our videographer, was brave enough to interview Mark Cropsey, aka Marcus Dread, the soul collector and proprietor of Evil Falls House of Tormented Souls-Haunted House. Get a taste of what scares await those who dare to enter his establishment this October... 😱
