What’s next for Afghanistan? Join the online conference October 1st.

The war, over a period of twenty years, has officially cost the lives of 240,000 people, many of them civilians, destroying entire villages and forcing the population to flee.

Several million Afghans are refugees in Pakistan, Iran and Turkey.

At the same time, the collapse of all the world’s stock markets has aggravated a creeping recession, which had already caused millions of job losses. The surge in oil prices, the meteoric rise in gold prices… again, the significance of this turning point in world history cannot be properly assessed at this stage. But no one can doubt that this new situation increases the threats that weigh on the situation of the workers and peoples of the whole world (…). At this turning point in the world situation, independent workers’ political action is the only way to defend the achievements of civilization, which are inseparable from democracy and peace.

The Colombian people were protagonists of the longest and most massive general strike in our history, a great event, with unprecedented, enormous, and peaceful daily days of protest in the streets throughout the country. During 45 days of struggle, we witnessed an irruption of youth and women, constituting the so-called first line that placed themselves at the head of the mobilizations, not only to defend, with their handmade shields, the rebellious crowds from the brutal repression by the state and paramilitary armed forces. But also to show the country and the world that they decided to fight against poverty, misery, unemployment, exploitation, and the no future to which our people, especially the youth, have been subjected during decades of oligarchic, neoliberal, and despotic governments. In particular, against the more than 20 years of the genocidal and corrupt regime of Alvaro Uribe Vélez, president in an unrelated body of sub president Duque, and his accomplices, bankers, landowners, businessmen, politicians, military, paramilitary, and drug trafficking mafias.

The People of Colombia Rise Up!

Since April 28, the uprising against the government of Iván Duque has not stopped and is showing the way.

The “national strike”, with protests, blockades and marches all over the country, went on, marking May 1st, forcing Duque to withdraw his reform project, along with the resignation of the Finance Minister on May 3rd, who said he didn’t want to be an obstacle to a “consensual solution”. But the streets continued to boil over against the violent repression that caused more than 30 deaths, thousands of wounded, 79 arrests and 200 missing persons.

more than seven million workers, peasants, women, pensioners, young people, taxi drivers, truck drivers, miners, students, doctors, nurses, blacks, indigenous people, environmentalists, feminists, human rights defenders, shopkeepers, small and medium businessmen, raised their voices against the tax reform and the inept, incapable, unfair and corrupt regime of Uribe and his sub president (?) They said enough of genocide and state terrorism, of the extermination of indigenous people, peasants, former combatants of the FARC, enough of the plundering of public health resources, no to bill 010, no to the labor and pension reforms, we want basic income for the millions of families thrown into poverty, free vaccines for all the people now.”

After noting that “there is no unified direction of the ‘paro’,” it was decided, among other points: “to denounce the disinformation campaign against the causes and actors of the national paro, which the Uribe-duquista dictatorship and the military leadership attribute to guerrilla fronts, to vandals and criminal gangs (…); to call for popular assemblies in all the points of concentration and blockades that culminate in a great municipal assembly that builds a unitary, programmatic and democratic roadmap.”

All solidarity with the struggle of the Colombian people, demanding respect for the right to demonstrate and an end to repression.
