Unlearning Project : Risk Assessments

31/03/2021

Our latest episode went LIVE last week!
It's funny, we're having such parallel experiences - both in the middle of deep transitions and unsure where this road is taking us, but willing to sit and ride it out.
Transitions are tough - it takes patience and grit to just wait for the next thing to be revealed.
It's so natural for us to jump to the next thing.
Beginnings and endings are exciting, emotional, definitive, and clear. Transitions are murky, confusing, and maybe awkward.
Here's to sitting in transition a little longer

Read this book: Transitions by William Bridges
*or listen on Audible 'cause that's what I do :)
I'm on my second time through and I should probably take notes.
I've been in a transition for a while - not knowing what I want to stop or start, if anything, and trying to feel out what I really want in this life. Work seems meaningless and mundane, daily life is full of responsibility and each task carries imaginary weight with it,
I want to enjoy more, be free of care like a kid, and not feel the expectation and judgment of society.
Is that possible?

You go for a walk, have a vacation, take a day off
and sure, those are little hits of freedom or space or peace
but then you're back to the grind, carrying a false sense of weight and responsibility.
At what point do you stop and consider that none of that matters?
What do you really want to be doing and how can you make THAT happen?

Life is full of transitions.
Beginnings and endings are obvious, but transitions are that weird in-between space where you might feel lost or aimless.
How do you handle that time?
That's what sets you apart.

What's your biggest fear?
Flying
Dying
Heights
Drowning
Is there any chance that fear might be accentuated because you are following the crowd, doing what you're supposed to do, doing what society thinks should be done?
You might find that things that trigger you are because you're avoiding the truth within yourself.
Listen up for more mind-blowing concepts ;)

Have you ever met someone who seemed to contradict themselves often?
Was your impression that they were trustworthy?
Or maybe you thought they were less so because they changed direction so often.
Hmm,
maybe they're more so because they change their mind based on new information as it comes to them!
A new episode dropped this morning all about this!

It's been said that the "greatest" in the world - athletes, inventors, CEOs, investors, whatever you want to fill in the blank - are not the smartest or the most talented, but the ones who didn't give up.
They're the ones who recovered from failure quickly, kept going even if everyone thought they were crazy, the ones who showed up relentlessly.
They trusted the process and kept going.
Do you exhibit that kind of grit?
Do you prefer to jump when the going gets tough?

There's a point in every journey where you stop to question if what you're doing is worth it.
All that effort, all that exertion
All that stress, all those early mornings
Will you keep going?
How do you know if it's worth it?

There's a book called The Dip, by Seth Godin.
Highly recommend.
Either you're on a promising path or you're in a cul-de-sac.
The thing that sets us all apart is the wherewithal to determine, even with all the grit and perseverance you can muster, if you're in a cul-de-sac or if your path is leading somewhere.
Tell me, how would you know?

"Trust The Process" - it sounds so cliché but we naturally tend to look past the beauty that exists in the period of strife on the way toward the goal.
That's where you're tested the most.
That's where you grow the most.
That's where you learn the most about yourself.
Are you trusting the process and willing to embrace the toughness that is the process or are you ready to jump to the next thing?

You've heard the phrase "Trust the process" before
What does that apply to in your life right now?
In what endeavor do you feel in the weeds or like you're just in the middle of things and can't quite see the light at the end of the tunnel yet?
90% of the battle is just showing up day after day.

You ever knock over an anthill and watch the ants throw their hands up and refuse to rebuild?
Ants go right to the solution and get to work.
How is it that we can be so intelligent, yet waste so much time fuming over why, how, and thinking about "that never should have happened!"
Are those thoughts helping?...really?

Time's running out!
Have you listened to Art Of Reframing yet?
Come Monday another new episode will be live, so make sure you've tuned in to Ep 52 before then :)
Reframing is a simple tactic we can all use in so many situations and in every aspect of life.
Pessimism and negativity can be flipped by intentionally recognizing thoughts, evaluating their origin and validity, and then reframing them to reflect an opportunity or gratitude.
What are you going to reframe today?

02/02/2021

For those with anxiety or anxious tendencies, it's easy to think "there's something wrong with me"
but what if that heightened state of awareness and emotion is your superpower?
How can you reframe it into a more positive light to see less of a problem and more of an opportunity?

Episode 52 - The Art Of Reframing on the Unlearning Project podcast:
When we have a flat tire, we have a chance to dwell in anger and frustration OR to appreciate the forced slow-down.
When we fall off from our workout regimen or diet, we can choose to mentally beat ourselves up and sulk for days on end OR we can decide that it's okay to try again.
Work in this area over time will create a mindset less likely to exude pessimism, hopelessness, and resentment.

Your thoughts are not facts.
Your thoughts are only thoughts.
They are not facts.
They may be assumptions, interpretations, conclusions, or opinions,
but one thing is for sure, they are not facts.
In Episode 52: Art of Reframing, we dive into this in more detail. I only heard this recently and it hit me like a ton of bricks.
We walk around thinking our thoughts are the truth.
Living by them,
Acting upon them,
Reacting based on them,
Our thoughts are fooling us.

Sometimes you just need a fresh perspective on your situation to realize the silver lining.
Reframing is an extremely useful tool to practice toward flipping negativity, pessimism, and resentment toward a more positive mindset.
What thoughts have you reframed lately?

If you think you're not good at something, but you've never even tried it, where did that idea come from?
How can you follow through in avoiding that activity based on only that thought?
What if you could be good at it?
Most people aren't good at things right off the bat, so what if it takes practice?!?!
Doesn't the joy of becoming good at something justify the commitment to trying?
What is something you didn't think you'd be good at but tried anyway?
What made you try it?

The Illusion of Truth can be Resisted with Sufficient Knowledge

Our perceptions of the world tend to change dramatically as we get older. I had far different goals, aspirations, and fantasies at age 22 than the ones I have now at 46. One observation I noticed is that at 22, I read predominantly self-help books to improve self-confidence. My goals were to achieve wealth, professional success, and a feeling of self-reliance.

Looking back, I can now see how each book I read constantly talked about how the expansion is better, bigger means better and lunch is for wimps. These were actually counterproductive for me and fueled a completely external and materialistic definition of “success.”

Of course, this made complete sense to a 22-year old who was deeply hungry desperate, and believing-in-the-dream type of guy like myself. Now, flip this outlook on its head and you’ll get, “where is the peace in more is better?”, a quote from one of Wayne Dyer’s books that has stuck with me. How could two polar opposite positions make complete sense to me at that time in my youth? I wanted more and to continually expand myself into wealth, success, and prestige.

But where is the peace in having more and constantly striving to expand one’s position in life? That question has inspired and haunted me for a long time now. I certainly don’t proclaim to have all of the answers, I openly and candidly choose to share what I’ve learned, how my perspective has shifted and the insights I continue to gather from navigating this life experience both professionally and personally.
