Our perceptions of the world tend to change dramatically as we get older. I had far different goals, aspirations, and fantasies at age 22 than the ones I have now at 46. One observation I noticed is that at 22, I read predominantly self-help books to improve self-confidence. My goals were to achieve wealth, professional success, and a feeling of self-reliance.
Looking back, I can now see how each book I read constantly talked about how the expansion is better, bigger means better and lunch is for wimps. These were actually counterproductive for me and fueled a completely external and materialistic definition of “success.”
Of course, this made complete sense to a 22-year old who was deeply hungry desperate, and believing-in-the-dream type of guy like myself. Now, flip this outlook on its head and you’ll get, “where is the peace in more is better?”, a quote from one of Wayne Dyer’s books that has stuck with me. How could two polar opposite positions make complete sense to me at that time in my youth? I wanted more and to continually expand myself into wealth, success, and prestige.
But where is the peace in having more and constantly striving to expand one’s position in life? That question has inspired and haunted me for a long time now. I certainly don’t proclaim to have all of the answers, I openly and candidly choose to share what I’ve learned, how my perspective has shifted and the insights I continue to gather from navigating this life experience both professionally and personally.
