"Would Have Given (Uddhav Thackeray) A Slap": Row Over Minister's Remark

Union minister Narayan Rane said it is shameful that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray does not know the year of independence

Union minister Narayan Rane has sparked off a row over his remarks about slapping Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for what he claimed as the latter's ignorance of the year of India's independence.
There is speculation that Mr Rane may be arrested over the remarks against the chief minister. Some reports said a team of Nashik police has left for Chiplun in Konkan region, where Mr Rane is present now, after a complaint against the Union minister over the remarks. There is no word yet from the police on these developments.

"It is shameful that the chief minister does not know the year of independence. He leaned back to enquire about the count of years of independence during his speech. Had I been there, I would have given (him) a tight slap," Mr Rane said during his Jan Ashirwad Yatra in adjoining Raigad district on Monday.

The BJP leader and former Shiv Sena chief minister claimed Mr Thackeray forgot the year of independence during his August 15 address to the people of the state. Mr Thackeray had to check the year of independence with his aides midway during the speech that day, Mr Rane said.

Mr Rane's remarks drew sharp reactions from Shiv Sena, whose workers put several posters in Mumbai and other places, calling him a 'kombdi chor'' (chicken stealer), a reference to the poultry shop he ran in Chembur five decades ago, during his initial stint with the Bal Thackeray-led party.

Shiv Sena's Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg MP Vinayak Raut said Mr Rane has lost his mental balance.

"To impress BJP leadership, Rane has been attacking Shiv Sena and its leaders. He lost his mental balance after his induction into the Modi-led ministry. Modi should show him the door," Mr Raut said.

Mr Rane flagged off his political life in Mumbai with the son-of-the-soil party led by Bal Thackeray in the late 1960s. He entered the Maharashtra Assembly in 1990 as a Sena MLA.

Rolls-Royce Sold By Bollywood Star Among Luxury Cars Seized In Bengaluru

At least seven luxury cars were seized on Sunday by transport authorities in Bengaluru for not paying tax and lacking ownership documents, officials said.
Some of the seized cars were reportedly purchased from Bollywood actors.

These include a Rolls-Royce belonging to a Bollywood star, news agency PTI quoted an official as saying, stating that the cars were parked near UB City.

“We don't know who it belongs to. There are no documents available with them. That's why the cars were seized,” Mr Kumar told PTI.

Transport Commissioner N Shiva Kumar said the cars were seized since no documents were available with the drivers of the vehicles.

PM's "Big Fan" Walking From Srinagar To Delhi In Hopes Of Meeting Him

Fahim Nazir Shah is walking to Delhi from Srinagar, hoping that his around 815-km journey will get the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he will get an opportunity to meet him.
"I am a very big fan of Prime Minister Modi," the 28-year-old, who works as a part-time electrician in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar, said as he reached Udhampur on Sunday after walking over 200 km.

Taking short breaks on his journey, which started two days ago, Mr Shah, a resident of the Shalimar area in Srinagar, believes that at the end of this arduous journey his dream of meeting the prime minister will be fulfilled.

"I am on my way to Delhi by foot to meet him (Modi) and I hope to attract the attention of the prime minister. To meet the prime minister is my cherished dream," he said, adding that his previous attempts to meet the PM did not fructify.

Mr Shah said that he has been following the Prime Minister on social media over the past four years, and his speech and actions have "touched my heart".

"At one time, when he was delivering an address at a rally, he stopped suddenly on hearing the ''azaan'' (Muslim call for prayer) leaving the public astonished...that gesture of our prime minister touched my heart and I became his ardent fan," he said.

Mr Shah said that over the past two and a half years, he has made several attempts to meet Prime Minister Modi in Delhi. "During the PM's last visit to Kashmir, security personnel did not allow me to meet him," he said.

This time I am sure I will get a chance to meet the prime minister," Mr Shah said.

Asked about the change in Jammu and Kashmir after its special status was abrogated and made into a Union Territory from a state in 2019, he said the change is visible as Prime Minister Modi has his focus on Jammu and Kashmir.

"There is a change in the situation, the development activities are taking place at a good pace and the Union Territory is marching forward," he said.

Mr Shah said he would like to discuss the problems of the educated and unemployed youths with the PM and developing the industrial sector in the Union Territory.

"I Don't Trust Anybody'': Joe Biden When Asked If He Believes Taliban

Taliban is seeking legitimacy and have made promises but Washington will see whether "they mean or not", said US President Joe Biden, adding that "I don't trust anybody" when asked whether he believes the Taliban or not.
During his address to the nation from White House, Biden said if the Taliban is going to attempt to provide for the people of Afghanistan, they would need additional help in terms of economic assistance, trade and a whole range of things.

"I don't trust anybody. Taliban has to make a fundamental decision. Is the Taliban going to attempt to be able to unite and provide for well being of the people of Afghanistan, which no one group has ever done for 100 years? If it does, it would need additional help in terms of economic assistance, trade and a whole range of things," he said when asked whether he trusts the Taliban now.

"Taliban has said and we will see whether they mean or not. They are seeking legitimacy to determine whether or not they would be recognised by other countries. They have told other countries as well as us that they do not want us to move our diplomatic presence completely. All this talk now, so far Taliban has not taken actions against US forces," he added.

His remarks come as countries continue to evacuate their citizens from Afghanistan through the Kabul airport, which is under US forces'' control.

The evacuations are being carried out as the security situation has deteriorated in Afghanistan following the takeover by the Taliban and the collapse of Ashraf Ghani's government.

US military has pulled around 25,100 individuals from Afghanistan since August 14, and approximately 30,000 since the end of July.

Biden said he is in discussions with his military officials regarding the extension of the evacuation mission in Afghanistan, beyond the August 31 deadline.

Biden informed that the US has extended the safe zone around the Kabul airport. "We have made a number of changes, including extending the access around the airport and the safe zone," he said.

Comments
Earlier on Friday, Biden had termed the evacuation from Afghanistan the ''most difficult and largest airlift'' ever in the history. He had assured to get all Americans and allies out of the war-torn country. "Kabul evacuation is among the largest and most difficult airlifts in history," Biden had said.

LG Again Refused Permission": Manish Sisodia On Delhi Oxygen Deaths Panel

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has rejected a proposal by the Arvind Kejriwal government to set up a committee to establish the number of people who died during the second Covid wave due to a lack of medical oxygen, and award ₹ 5 lakh monetary compensation to their families.
This is the second time Mr Baijal has dismissed a proposal of this nature; in June he refused the Delhi government permission to investigate nearly 40 deaths reported from two city hospitals.

"We sent the file to LG sahib... but he has again refused permission for an inquiry into deaths because of a lack of oxygen," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said Friday evening, adding that the Lieutenant Governor had said "there is no need to form any committee".

"The centre is saying states should report how many deaths occurred due to lack of oxygen... but the LG is not allowing an investigation. How will we be able to say how many died..." he said.

"This means the centre wants states to give it in writing that there were no deaths due to lack of oxygen. But to say this will be a big lie to those who have lost their loved ones."

Mr Sisodia also accused the centre of "mismanaging (Delhi's) oxygen crisis" in April-May, when the devastating second wave of the pandemic struck the capital, leaving hospitals scrambling for supplies and forcing relatives to scour the city for even the smallest oxygen cylinder.

A massive row broke out last month after junior Health Minister Bharati Praveen Pawar told the Rajya Sabha "no deaths due to lack of oxygen were reported" during the second COVID-19 wave.

The centre's statement triggered furious protests from the opposition, which pointed to the many social media appeals and court cases filed by hospitals, particularly in Delhi, asking for oxygen.

The centre then asked states and UTs to collect and submit this data, which was to have been presented during the recently concluded monsoon session of Parliament; a session that was shut down two days early because of a fierce stand-off between the opposition and the centre.

Last week Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the Delhi government "it is not too late" to submit the data; Mr Mandaviya took a swipe at Mr Sisodia's comment from days earlier, when he said the Delhi government had received no such request from the centre.

Andhra Pradesh is one of only two states, so far, to report oxygen supply-related deaths; the other is Punjab, which said four deaths were "suspected" to be due to a lack of oxygen.

The surge in severe symptomatic cases during the second COVID-19 wave earlier this year - cases requiring hospitalisation and oxygen - put immense pressure on an already creaking health infrastructure, and hospitals ran short of critical medical supplies, including oxygen.

The shortfall was severe enough to force the government to import oxygen, rush to set up new oxygen production plants and turn to other countries for help in setting up emergency facilities.

Moplah rebellion a manifestation of Talibani mindset: RSS leader Ram Madhav

The Moplah rebellion, also known as the Mappila riots, of 1921 was one of the first manifestations of the Taliban mindset in India and the Left government in Kerala was allegedly trying to whitewash it by celebrating it as a communist revolution, RSS RPT RSS leader Ram Madhav claimed on Thursday.
He said the national leadership is aware of the “correct history” and therefore, it will not give any space to such Talibani or separatist forces to create violence or divide people in the country, be it Kashmir or Kerala.
Madhav, a member of the National Executive Committee of RSS, was speaking at an event held at Kozhikode in remembrance of the victims of the violence during the 1921 rebellion in Kerala.

Lashkar, Jaish Still Operate With Impunity": S Jaishankar At UN Briefing

Foreign minister S Jaishankar detailed India's concerns about terror for the first time since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, naming specific groups in another first. "Whether in Afghanistan or against India, groups like Lashkar-e Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed continue to operate with impunity and encouragement... Heightened activities of the proscribed Haqqani network justify growing anxiety," he said in an address to the United Nations Security Council in New York.
"In our own immediate neighbourhood, ISIL-Khorasan (ISIL-K) has become more energetic and is constantly seeking to expand its footprint. Events unfolding in Afghanistan have naturally enhanced global concerns about their implications for both regional and international security," he said during a briefing on 'Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts''.

"What is true of Covid is true of terrorism. No one is safe until all of us are safe... (But) Some countries undermine our collective resolve," added the minister. Then in what appeared a dig at China, he continued, "When we see state hospitality being extended to those with blood on their hands, we must call out the doublespeak".

Supreme Court Announces Names Of 9 Judges Recommended for Elevation

The Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana has recommended nine names, which include three women high court judges, to the Centre for appointment as judges at the top court, the Supreme Court has said in a statement. Four of the judges to be elevated are chief justices of high courts.
The statement came hours after the Chief Justice of India slammed the media for its reports of the matter. The reports on appointments even before any formal announcement are "counterproductive", Chief Justice NV Ramana said.

The chief justices of high courts whose names are recommended are -- Justices Abhay Shreeniwas Oka of the Karnataka High Court, Vikram Nath of the Gujarat High Court, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari of Sikkim High Court and Justice Hima Kohli of Telengana High Court.

Besides, names of Justice B V Nagarathna from the Karnataka High Court, Justice C T Ravikumar of Kerala High Court, Justice M M Sundresh of Madras High Court and Justice Bela Trivedi from the Gujarat High Court judge have been recommended by the Collegium.

Senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha, whose name if cleared, would became the sixth lawyer to be elevated to the top court bench directly from the Bar.

Speaking at a function earlier today, Chief Justice Ramana said he was "extremely upset" and asked the media to be "responsible" in reporting such news.

India "Very Carefully" Following Developments In Afghanistan: S Jaishankar

With the Taliban now in control in Kabul, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said New Delhi is "very carefully" following the developments in Afghanistan and India's focus is on ensuring the security and safe return of Indian nationals still in the war-torn country.
Mr Jaishankar, addressing reporters at the UN Security Council stakeout after chairing an open-debate on peacekeeping under India's current UNSC Presidency, said "that (situation in Afghanistan) is really what has been very much the focus of my own engagements here, talking to the UN Secretary General and other colleagues who are here as well as the US Secretary of State."

"At the moment we are, like everybody else, very carefully following developments in Afghanistan. I think our focus is on ensuring the security in Afghanistan and the safe return of Indian nationals who are there," he said in response to a question by PTI.

Mr Jaishankar has discussed the situation in Afghanistan in his bilateral meetings in United Nations, including with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

He arrived in New York on Monday as the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the situation in Afghanistan, the second time in just over the 10 days that the powerful UN body met under India's Presidency for the month of August to discuss the situation in the war-torn country.

India on Tuesday rushed back home its ambassador Tandon and staff from the embassy in Kabul in a military transport aircraft following escalating tension, fear and uncertainty gripping the Afghan capital after the Taliban insurgents seized the Afghan capital on Sunday.
