Fresh off clinching the WNBA championship and earning Finals MVP with the New York Liberty, Jonquel Jones received a hero’s welcome in her native Bahamas.

The celebrations included a parade, school visits, and a meeting with Prime Minister Philip Davis. Jones, who has played internationally in countries like South Korea, Russia, Turkey, Mongolia, and China, emphasized the importance of her Bahamian roots and the potential of basketball in the Bahamas.

She plans to rest before joining the Chinese basketball club, Sichuan Yuanda Meile, aiming to help the Liberty secure back-to-back championships.

Congrats, JJ, and keep shining! 🌟

Hard to believe this was me 15 years ago, chasing my dream one game at a time. The journey wasn’t always easy, but it shaped who I am today. Life after the game felt like I stepped onto a new court without a playbook.

The key is to focus on your intangibles. The same hustle, grit, and discipline that made you a great athlete will make you successful in whatever comes next. Keep building, keep grinding.

Who are we supposed to believe? Noah Vonleh or the Shanghai Sharks?

Vonleh’s recent experience in China sounds like something straight out of a bad movie. Allegedly there is pressure to play injured and a terrifying hotel ordeal where SIX people tried to break into his room. Add in all the salary disputes and as an athlete, it’s hard to not be team Noah.

On the other hand, teams always have their side of the story, and we know the truth can get murky when money and contracts are involved. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about wild situations overseas.

And that’s exactly why we are here. Athletes need support, real advice, and a voice when things go sideways. No one should feel alone trying to navigate this stuff…especially in another country.

So what do y’all think? Is this another case of an athlete getting screwed, or is there more to the story? Let’s talk 👇

Four years ago, I started Overseas Famous with nothing but a wild idea and a lot of late nights wondering if anyone would care about the stories of overseas athletes. Fast forward to today, and it’s not just a book or a podcast anymore…it’s a growing community built by and for overseas athletes.

We’re putting in the work to make sure the people grinding it out around the world get the support they deserve. We are building something real for the imports who’ve been overlooked for too long.

We’ve come so far, but we’re just getting started. Happy Thanksgiving, imports. Here’s to hard work and big dreams all while proving that we’re more than just a name on a roster. Let’s see how far we can take this thing together.

Are We Coddling Athletes Too Much?

Joel Embiid made headlines this week, not for his dominance on the court, but for being called out by Tyrese Maxey in a team meeting. This sparked a bigger question...are we creating impossible expectations for athletes while shielding them from accountability?

In the world of billion-dollar investments and supermax contracts, have we lost the balance between support and discipline?

In this week’s Overseas Famous newsletter, I dive into:

🏀 Joel Embiid’s situation and what it says about today’s sports culture.

🏀 The hard truths about playing overseas, where there’s no luxury, no excuses, and no room for being late.

🏀 Why accountability might be the missing piece in modern sports.

Are we setting athletes up for success, or failure?
