A beautifully upbeat melody brought together by a banjo and cello duet, one can almost visualize themselves skipping down a dirt road while the sunshine shines, the breeze rustles your hair and brings the smell of local native wildflowers to your nose. Your packed duffle bag hangs loosely over your shoulder as you joyously accept the journey ahead. Where are you going?

This bluesy song, while catchy and vaguely familiar, seems to tell the story of a weary traveler on the road home. He encounters a few different birds along the way and ponders what spiritual message each one has for him, whether it be guidance, motivation or warnings. The song feels like a plea with these majestic winged creatures to show him the way and protect him on this journey home.

On the Pacific Coast of Northern California and Southern Oregon reside the Tolowa Dee-Ni' people. There is a legend in the Tolowa Nation about a great tidal wave (Test-ch'as) that wiped the earth clean sometime between 8200 and 310 BCE. It's said those who survived were sent to Mount En-May in the Klamath mountain range of Oregon.
This performance of 'Tolowa Tidal Wave,' is part of a new album from @ronstadtbrothers called The Road, commissioned by #TomKat Foundation, @sjsu - Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies, #Caminoarts, and @TomKatMeDiA. It tells a story about the ancestors of today's Tolowa Nation peoples and their lives in the Coastal Redwood Trees of modern-day California. The song takes us on a journey of learning about their ancestral life and the tidal wave described in their storytelling, and how it upended their ancestral home generations ago.
