When I newly moved to the area where I now live, I needed a carpenter to put certain things in place for me. I didn't really know anyone around whom I could ask, so I had to find one all by myself.
One sunny afternoon, I set out in search of one. I walked to a carpenter's shop I had noticed weeks before, but on getting there, it was deserted, not a single person in sight.
I had walked quite a distance so I became stressed almost immediately because I didn't know any other place.
As I turned to walk the same path home, I suddenly remembered that I have The Helper within- The Holy Spirit.
Isn't it not-so-funny that we often resort to prayer only as a last resort after we have leaned on and exhausted our intelligence and knowledge?
So, I quickly muttered a prayer under my breath;
"Holy Spirit, please help me find a Carpenter!"
It was as though he was waiting for me to say the prayer.
Almost immediately, the still small voice said,
"Enter into that street."
This is a street I had never entered into before. I was new in the area and didn't really know my way around.
Immediately I entered that street, I saw someone carrying a neatly polished wood (perhaps a fitting for a Wardrobe) and walking gently towards the same direction I was coming from.
I was still shocked as to the swiftness of the answer to my prayer that I allowed him to pass me for a second or two before saying, "Hello, good afternoon. Are you a carpenter?"
He stopped in his tracks, turned around, and said, "Yes."
I smiled within me. Apparently, he was heading to a street just before mine to get a job done.
He later came to the house and did all the fitting I needed him to do.
You know, this reminds me of the words of Solomon in the Proverbs:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight."
- Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Why am I writing this?
It may appear like I'm writing this post for you (well, I guess I am), but I'm actually writing this for me.
For those times when it feels like I'm at my wit's end and don't know where to go, I'll always remember this incident amongst many others.
If God shows up in the things we call "little" then he will show up in the big things too.
