Lola Baldwin established the Women's Protective Division of the Portland, OR Police Department in 1908, where she targeted any business that exploited young women, launched an after-care program for juvenile delinquents, and assisted single mothers in getting social resources.

Her innovative approach to policing not only helped reduce crime but also provided vital support and resources for women in need.

Baldwin's contributions to law enforcement paved the way for future generations of women in policing and set a powerful example for all those who strive to serve and protect their communities.

"Mirandizing" an arrestee indicates the police officer has informed the subject of their rights under the Constitution before questioning them, the most well-known being the right to remain silent.

The phrase originates from the Miranda v. Arizona Supreme Court decision of 1966, which ruled that anyone who has been arrested must be advised of their rights.

Dalmatians have been used as firefighter dogs since the early days of horse-drawn fire carriages.

The Dalmatian’s main job was to run alongside and protect the horses that pulled the fire engines, keeping them calm and focused on their task in spite of loud noises, crowds, or other distractions.

This tradition has continued even though firefighters no longer use horse-drawn carriages - many departments still keep at least one Dalmatian mascot. 🐾

In case you missed the exciting launch this past Friday of When Every Second Matters...

This is a series not to miss!

"You can train all you want to for different things, but you never really know how you are going to act or how you are going to cope, not cope, how it's going to affect you emotionally, psychologically, until it's there."

Officers were responding to what they thought was a shots fired call, but upon arrival, it was quickly evident that the loud noise reported was a result of a fire that was rapidly engulfing a residential building.

With the fire department miles away, officers needed to make a split-second decision to try to evacuate the residents, by entering the burning complex without the proper gear to ensure their safety.

Officer Mazone and former officer Duffy, put their lives on the line in an attempt to rescue the residents. The events that unfolded not only changed the community but changed the course of the officers' personal and professional lives as well.

In 1487, Isabella I of Castile’s armies were the first to use ambulances.

The Spanish army of the time was treated well, and people came from all over Europe to join. They had the first military hospitals (called “ambulancias”), but wounded soldiers couldn’t get help until after the fight was over, so many lives were lost.

Napoleon Bonaparte’s top doctor, Dominique Jean Larrey (1766–1842), developed the ambulancias volantes, which changed how ambulances were used on the battlefield.
