Hari ini 28 tahun yang lalu, Sony PlayStation dilancarkan.

Segalanya dimulakan oleh Ken Kutaragi, pengurus divisyen kejuruteraan perkakasan Sony. Minatnya terhadap pembangunan permainan video bermula apabila melihat anaknya bermain Nintendo Famicom & merasakan ada penambahbaikan boleh dilakukan.

Pada 1988, Sony berusahasama dengan Nintendo untuk bangunkan ciri CD-ROM kepada konsol Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Diberi nama “SNES-CD”/“Play Station,” ia dijadual untuk diumum pada Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 1991 di Las Vegas.

Namun Nintendo membatalkan pelan usahasama itu tanpa memberitahu Sony & mengikat kontrak dengan Philips untuk projek tersebut. Berang selepas mengetahuinya, Kutaragi & Presiden Sony Norio Ohga memutuskan supaya mereka membangunkan konsol sendiri.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) ditubuhkan & pada Oktober 1993, Sony mengumumkan bahawa mereka memasuki pasaran konsol permainan video dengan PlayStation. Ia disusuli pemeteraian jalinan dengan pembangun pihak ke-3 seperti Namco & Konami.

Di samping mendapat sokongan daripada pelbagai studio permainan video Jepun, Sony kemudian membeli syarikat dari Liverpool, Psygnosis sebagai pasukan pembangun dalamannya yang memainkan peranan penting dalam pembangunan perisian & perkakasannya.

PlayStation mula dipasarkan di Jepun pada 3 Disember 1994 pada harga ¥39,800. Ia terjual 100,000 unit pada hari pertama & 2 juta unit tak sampai 6 bulan sebelum mula dipasarkan di Amerika Utara (9/11/1995), Eropah (29/9/1995) & Australia (15/11/1995).

Ia menjadi platform hiburan komputer pertama yang terjual lebih 100 juta unit dalam tempoh kurang sedekad. Kejayaan PlayStation membawa kepada kelahiran penerusnya, bermula dengan Playstation 2 pada 2000 hinggalah yang terkini Playstation 5 (2020).

Sony menamatkan pengeluaran konsol pertama PlayStation & permainannya pada 23 Mac 2006, 11 tahun selepas pelancarannya & kurang setahun sebelum PlayStation 3.
