Weightlifter sets more goals for 2025🏋️‍♀️🏋️‍♂️

There’s hardly any rest for Weightlifting Fiji especially when excelling and success are on their mind.

As they countdown to wrap up this year, reflection on this year has been on the achievements and the hard work they have all pitched in.

Coach Henry Elder says it’s been a remarkable year for this sporting body, and with their eyes set on even greater heights, they’re ready to elevate their game in the coming year.

“To share something and shed a little bit of light on Weightlifting Fiji, we’ve had a pretty exciting year and right from the beginning, from the onset during the Oceania Championships in Auckland – that set the platform for the year.”

Elder believes he has an exceptional group of athletes who have consistently demonstrated immense passion and dedication over the years.

Even amidst the festivities, they remained focused, with their captain creating history just days before Christmas.

"No donation is too small - every contribution makes a difference."

The Vanuatu government is looking for organisations to "donate" disaster relief funds.

Currently, there are over 50 active GoFundMe fundraisers online, raising money for relief from the earthquake last week. Story in development.

Please leave for a moment to read these words:
You may have heard that Vanuatu was struck by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake, resulting in devastating damage and loss of life. We feel very lucky to have escaped unharmed. While our family is here, we are sourcing and distributing much-needed food and essential supplies to local communities. Your support would mean the world in helping this beautiful nation recover during this critical time.

At a time where rescue operations are ongoing, power and water are still unavailable in some communities, food is limited, and many local homes have been damaged. After speaking with local villages, we’ve identified the most urgent needs: clean water, rice, nappies, and other essentials. As provisions become available in the coming days, we will ensure they reach the most vulnerable.

Today is Christmas, what do you want to say...
I've made a few cards this Christmas, so if you have something to say, check out in the comments! Many surprises in the comment section~~
Do you know where is the first place to spend Christmas in the world? It's in South Pacific!
The first place to ring in the Christmas is Kiritimati Island, which is part of the Republic of Kiribati. The small region is also known as Christmas Island, which is in the world's farthest forward time zone, making it 19 hours ahead of places like NYC.
About 45 minutes later other places like Nuku'alofa in Tonga celebrate. It's just 6:00 a.m. EST on December 25 when that happens.
When it's 7:00 a.m. EST, it's December 25 in Fiji.
Places like Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, along with the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, say "Happy Christmas!" when it's 9:00 a.m. EST.

BREAKING! Palau’s Immigration crackdown

Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr signed Presidential Directive No. 24-65 on Wednesday, December 18, instituting immigration controls for a 90-day period in an effort to combat criminal activity linked to foreign nationals.

However, the directive has raised concerns over the scope of authority given to the National Security Coordinator and its potential effects on Palau’s investment climate and labour market.

The directive was prompted by recent high-profile cases of criminal activity involving foreign nationals, including a murder, immigration fraud, and drug trafficking. Past instances of illegal gambling operations and related crimes further highlight systemic vulnerabilities in visa and work permit processes.

The directive assigns the National Security Coordinator oversight of:

*Approvals for tourist visa extensions and investor visa renewals.
*Reviews of work permit applications submitted by individuals currently on tourist visas.
*Screening applications under the Foreign Investment Board’s review process.

Additionally, all new and renewed visas in 10 categories—including business, work, and resident visas—will be subject to review by the coordinator, who may recommend revocation if warranted.

What's the decorations of the upcoming Christmas?

Samoa's Alcohol Control Board has announced temporary extensions to the operating hours for alcohol sales at nightclubs and bars during the Christmas and New Year period.

The extended hours will apply to Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

On Christmas Eve, alcohol distribution and sales at nightclubs and bars will be permitted from 10 am until 2 am on Christmas Day, Wednesday 25 December.

This means partygoers in Samoa can enjoy two extra hours of celebration with loved ones, thanks to the temporary extension on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Similarly, the same hours will be in effect for New Year's Eve on Tuesday 31 December. On Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, the sales hours will return to their usual schedule.

Importantly, the notice clarifies that these temporary hours only apply to nightclubs and bars.

Set, Go! Boxers are ready for the night of boxing in Oceania!

THE ring is set for the Oceania Fight Promotions boxing night at the Hideaway Hotel at Six Mile, Port Moresby.

There will be five all male bouts on the card set for this Saturday.

The fights will start at 6pm and end at 10pm.

“It will be an all-local bout unlike in the past where international fighters especially from the Philippines were brought in and matched up against the local fighters.

It is unfortunate the fight night has no female boxers on their fight card due the recent PNG Boxing championship event that saw a couple of female boxers taking part, and have to recover before they can fight again.

If give you a piece of string, what will you do?

Recently, the "Mulan House" Women Entrepreneurs Association of the Chamber of Commerce of Chinese Enterprises in Papua New Guinea held a New Year themed event in Port Moresby. With the theme of "Weaving a Better Future", the event took the learning of traditional handbag weaving techniques in PNG as a link to renew friendship and jointly wish a better New Year.

What is this woven bag? With a population of about 9.95 million, PNG is home to more than 1,000 tribes and more than 800 languages. In such a diverse culture, women in almost all tribes, villages, and families use the same item, the "Bilen bag" - a traditional hand-woven bag for women.

In rural areas, people use Bilen bags with a maximum width of 1 meter, which can hold dozens of kilograms of items. Urban Bilen bags are relatively sophisticated and fashionable, and are mostly used to carry daily belongings or as fashion accessories, with the smallest only palm-sized.

At the beginning, ordinary people used Bilun bags to put sweet potatoes, fruits and other agricultural products, and tribal soldiers used them to load arrows, and later, Bilun bags gradually developed into local characteristics of gifts. Accompanied by traditional songs, dances and messages of blessing, friends and family will present Bilen bags to significant others at birthdays, weddings, bar mitzvahs and other ceremonies.

Now it is also a symbol of PNG's friendly exchanges with the outside world. When foreign dignitaries visit PNG, they will receive exquisite Bilen bags. Chinese enterprises, Chinese medical teams and Chinese agricultural assistance teams in Papua New Guinea often receive the gratitude of the local people - Bilen bags.

Only VVVIP can enter Samoa tala VIP terminal?

The Air NZ was not given the option to continue operating at the international terminal in Faleolo and was instead required to use the new $25 million regional airport.

The minister criticised Air New Zealand’s handling of VIP passengers, including Speaker of the House Papalii Lio Masipau and Minister of Justice Matamua Vasati Pulufana, amid allegations they bypassed standard security procedures.

Brent Roxburgh, Air New Zealand’s Head of Pacific Islands, told the Samoa Observer that Air New Zealand will only use the VIP terminal for preapproved passengers.

“Air New Zealand continues to use the VIP terminal for people who have been approved in advance, on the condition they have been screened in the main terminal before departure,” Roxburgh said.

Tensions between Air New Zealand and Samoa Airport Authority (SAA) General Manager Tumanuvao Evile Falefatu escalated after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) followed the airline’s departure policy.

The Japanese Ambassador to Samoa, Senta Keisuke, was escorted to the main terminal for security screening prior to departure on December 10.

In an email obtained by the Samoa Observer, Tumanuvao expressed frustration with Air New Zealand’s country manager, Samantha Imo-Munif, over the arrangement.

“Sam, you make things complicated,” Tumanuvao wrote, asserting that “MFAT does not dictate us; screening will still be there at SAA VIP.”

He also requested staff observe screening procedures and warned Imo-Munif to “tread carefully” before signing off with, “Watch out before someone gets burned.”

Samoa Airport Authority staff stationed at the regional airport told the Samoa Observer photographer the newspaper was prohibited from the $25 million publicly funded facility.

Samoa Observer photographer Junior Ami made the trip to the airport on Thursday afternoon to take photos of the facility that began operations in December.

Mr Ami was at the regional airport to take photos for a news story when Samoa Airport Authority (S.A.A.) staff approached him and demanded he leave immediately.

He said when he started taking photos, three S.A.A. staff, two men and one woman asked if he was from the Samoa Observer.

When he replied yes, the staff told him he was not allowed to take photos claiming these were instructions from their boss.

Good news! Fijians living overseas no longer have to travel to the capital in person to get a passport

Fijians living abroad will no longer have to travel to capital cities for passport services under the Government’s plan to decentralize immigration services.

Under the proposal, Fijians living abroad will no longer need to travel to distant capitals such as Canberra or Sydney to complete passport biometrics.

Instead, the process will be decentralized, with passport services offered at enrolment centers in major Australian cities, including Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, as well as in Suva, Lautoka, and Labasa.

Applicants will also have the option of receiving their processed passports by mail, eliminating the need for additional travel and accommodation costs.

The government is also exploring the possibility of expanding the outsourcing initiative to other countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand and Canada if the pilot programs in Australia and Fiji are successful.

“We started by assisting homeless people on the streets of Port Moresby, providing basic necessities through our own contributions. Now, we’ve extended our efforts to include hospitals, starting with Port Moresby General Hospital,” Mr. Kengi shared.

During the visit, the group provided gift bags to 52 young patients. Each bag contained toiletries and fresh fruits, aiming to meet both practical and emotional needs.

Can apply for passports overseas? Vanuatu launches first overseas Passport Enrollment Station in Hong Kong

Vanuatu's first overseas passport enrollment station for printing new electronic passports has been launched in Hong Kong.

Caretaker Minister of Internal Affairs, Andrew Solomon Napuat, praised the achievement, which was made possible by a dedicated team of local professionals.

Mr. Napuat expressed pride in the team, highlighting their ability to complete the task.

"Installing a passport printing system in a foreign country is a major achievement," he said. The installation took place at the office of the Vanuatu Consul General in Hong Kong, where the system was tested and successfully implemented.”

The newly installed system allows for efficient processing, taking about 10 to 15 minutes to issue a passport. The first passport printed at the station was for Vanuatu’s Consul General to Hong Kong, George Bogiri, demonstrating the system’s capability to produce high-quality electronic passports quickly.

The caretaker Minister announced that Vanuatu citizens living abroad can now upgrade to the new electronic passports by visiting the Consulate General office in Hong Kong. The office is staffed by a Vanuatu Immigration officer dedicated to assisting citizens with passport printing.

Napuat also revealed plans to expand enrollment stations to other locations approved by the Council of Ministers, including Brussels, Dubai, and New Caledonia. These overseas stations will complement installations already completed in most provinces across Vanuatu, with PENAMA Province set to follow once its immigration building is ready.

The Minister noted the importance of these stations in addressing challenges faced by Vanuatu citizens traveling abroad with the older version of the passport. "This initiative will make it easier for citizens worldwide to upgrade their passports and improve their travel experience," he said.

Papua New Guinea's foremost tourist attraction, the Kokoda Track, reopened on Thursday afternoon after being shut down by landowners over a payment dispute.

The route was made famous by Australian troops in World War II, who clashed with Japanese soldiers along the route throughout much of 1942.

After the war, it became a noted trekking route, attracting mostly Australians following the path the soldiers had taken under far more perilous conditions.

Oro Province encompasses part of the 96 kilometre long track, which runs from near Port Moresby to Kokoda Village, over the Owen Stanley Ranges.

UNESCO inscribes Chinese 'Spring Festival' on intangible cultural heritage list. What is Chinese 'Spring Festival'?

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced on Wednesday to add Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of traditional new year to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In China, the spring festival marks the beginning of the new year. It falls on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar and involves a variety of social practices to usher in the new year, pray for good fortune, celebrate family reunions and promote community harmony. This process of celebration is known as ‘guonian’ (crossing the year).

In the days preceding the festival, people clean their homes, stock provisions and prepare food. On New Year’s Eve, families dine together and stay up late to welcome the new year. During the festival, people wear new clothes, make offerings to heaven, earth and ancestors, and extend greetings to elders, relatives, friends and neighbours.

The spring festival promotes family values, social cohesion and peace while providing a sense of identity and continuity for the Chinese people.

Extend, increase! There is new information about the direct flight between China and Vanuatu

The Vanuatu Government signed a bilateral agreement on Civil Air Transport and a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on Traffic Rights with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) yesterday to enhance bilateral ties in aviation, tourism and trade.

CAAC Administrator Song Zhiyong shared that during the past two days, the two countries have prolonged in discussions and shared dialogues in relations to air transportation and how to strengthen them.

“Vanuatu has long been a good friend of China in the South Pacific,” Mr. Song said

“Over the past 42 years, the relationship between the two resulted in something stronger, and we are appreciative of how Vanuatu has stood and supported the One-China Policy.

“Our aim is for both leaders to support the aviation impact at a national effort.

“During the past four months, we have maintained consultations between the countries to sign the Air Service Agreement and the Memorandum of Agreement on Traffic Rights to provide legal foundation for airline services to meet national and international demands.”

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Minister for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Matai Seremaiah, conveyed his thanks on behalf of the Vanuatu Government and said it is the first time for the CAAC to foster a relationship with the Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu (CAAV).

“Vanuatu is dependent on tourism, from a Government scale, we are committed to partake in the agreement to promote marketing and tourism in the country,” he said.

CAAV Acting Director and Deputy Director Ellory Takiau said the MoA is to bind the agreement made during the Prime Minister’s visit to China this year to sign the Air Transportation Agreement which will allow Chinese planes to make direct flights between China and Vanuatu.

Mr. Salwai had remarked during his visit that Vanuatu will connect with state and business corporations in Shanghai to promote Vanuatu as a favourable destination for Chinese investors and tourists.

Mr. Takiau said this MoA is to ensure if China wants to extend its flights to Port Moresby and to Port Vila, the CAAV will facilitate the flights.

“The MoA will strengthen CAAV to work more closely with CAAC to bind diplomatic ties between the two nations,” he said.

According to past consultations held between the Vanuatu Government and CAAC Deputy Director General (DG), Chen Wei, in 2018, Mr. Chen was briefed on how the Government of Vanuatu is setting its sights on flights between China direct to Vanuatu and that initial preparations are carefully being looked at to facilitate such flights.

The Deputy DG of CAAC reassured that CAAC would assist CAAV and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (MIPU) in marketing Port Vila to Chinese airline companies and aircraft intending to operate in Vanuatu. CAAC further stated its commitment to consider and assist CAAV accordingly, based on the excellent diplomatic relations both countries enjoy.
