An update from one of our scholarship recipients:⁣

“Hi, I'm Erika Morris, the 2021 Media Girlfriends' university scholarship recipient. I'd like to say thank you!⁣
⁣
I graduated from Concordia's journalism program this May and am now working full-time at CBC Montreal. ⁣
⁣
Working in journalism is more fulfilling than I could have expected and I feel I'm taking on a new adventure every day. I had the opportunity to dip my toes in writing, radio, and television and am growing my confidence as a local reporter. ⁣
⁣
Journalism is a hard field to break into, and a lot of young people are disillusioned with the state of the media landscape.⁣
⁣
Through their hard work, including the scholarship program, Media Girlfriends shows us there is room for us in this industry and we can find the support and resources we need to thrive, no matter our background.”⁣

We are thrilled to announce the recipients of the Media Girlfriends 2022 student scholarships! ⁣
⁣
Christina Gervais .lakotasiou of Wood Mountain Lakota First Nation, Saskatchewan will receive a $10,000 CAD award in this year’s new Indigenous student category.⁣
⁣
Christina is enrolled in the Indigenous Journalism and Communications program at First Nations University of Canada. Christina's dedication to uplifting her community - whether through producing Dakota language podcasts or by helping neighbouring Indigenous communities search for better internet connectivity - is what stood out most clearly to the judging panel. "I recognized her outstanding natural abilities as a strategic communicator and storyteller," Shannon Avison, Assistant Professor of Indigenous Communication Arts at First Nations University of Canada wrote in a reference letter. Christina’s determination to continue her education with three young children is inspiring, and we hope this award supports her education, work, and family.⁣

We are thrilled to announce the recipients of the Media Girlfriends 2022 student scholarships! ⁣
⁣
Taliah Lyons of Ottawa, Ontario will receive a $10,000 CAD award in the university/college category.⁣
 ⁣
Taliah is enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) & Advanced Applied Arts Diploma Joint Interactive Multimedia and Design program at Carleton University and Algonquin College. Taliah applies a community-centred approach to both her areas of study and her extensive extracurricular activities. She also leads the Talk Overdose project, an opioids education initiative which has reached hundreds of high school students. The judges were moved by Taliah’s tenacious spirit and drive to move past personal adversity and create space for other young people to do the same.⁣

We are thrilled to announce the recipients of the Media Girlfriends 2022 student scholarships! ⁣

Mira del Prado ._delprado04_ of Ricmond Hill, Ontario will receive a $10,000 CAD award in the high school category.⁣
 ⁣
Mira is enrolled in the Film Studies program at York University. An arts student from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Mira is a leader and activist with a passion for equity and justice who is already paying it forward and lifting others up as she climbs. The judges felt she demonstrated great wisdom and depth in her essay about filmmaking and its power to connect, heal and inspire. Of her work, Mira says, "Vulnerability through my films allows me to give something genuine to the world.”⁣

The 2022 Media Girlfriends College and University Scholarship is for Canadian women and gender diverse students studying journalism, communications, media, or tech. ⁣
⁣
Three $10,000 scholarships are available:⁣
⁣
✅ 1x 2022 Media Girlfriends Indigenous Student Scholarship⁣
⁣
✅ 2x 2022 Media Girlfriends College and University Scholarship (one for high school students, one for post secondary students)⁣

If you donate to our scholarship, you’ll be supporting people like Jada Wallace who received a $10,000 CAD award in last year’s Black high school student category. ⁣

Jada has been studying media & communications at while balancing a part-time grocery store job & production assistant gigs on film sets in Toronto. ⁣
⁣
She says, “Studying journalism has unlocked a new world for me and a unique confidence in my storytelling ability. I appreciate the Media Girlfriends scholarship because for my first semester of school I could solely focus on producing my best work possible and not the excess stress around tuition nor other fees.Through their network, I was able to connect with many journalists to hear more about their stories and for support with school assignments.”⁣

We want to support more students like Jada. So far we’ve raised $25,367 of our $30,000 goal for three student scholarships this year and we need some help with the final push. Can you help us raise $4,633 by the end of this month? ⁣
