While public finances increase with the contribution of inflation, the people are getting poorer. Erkan Okandan, one of the former bureaucrats, said that it was seen that public revenues increased rapidly through unjust taxes with the contribution of high inflation. Okandan also emphasized that "Get out and tell this society the truth".

Erkan Okandan, one of the former bureaucrats, touched on a very important issue in his statement on his social media account. Underlining that inflation is also a tax, Okandan noted that public revenues increased due to indirect taxes with the contribution of high inflation, that is, through unfair taxes.

“PUBLIC OFFICIALS ARE ALSO NEGATIVELY AFFECTED”

Stating that there is a positive situation in terms of increase in revenues in terms of public finances, Okandan stated that the purchasing power of the minimum wage has decreased, and that the low-income and, so to speak, public servants who are under the scope of Law No. 47/2010, are also negatively affected.

“IMMEDIATE IMPLEMENTATION OF TAX REFORM MUST BE PERCEIVED”

Sharing figures on the subject, Okandan said, “At the current stage, whoever will form the government in this country, no matter who will form the government so that such issues can be addressed a little. It should be perceived that a very serious tax reform should be implemented urgently in this country.” Okandan underlined that all wage earners, from the minimum wage to the low-income to the civil servant, are struggling with indirect taxes, naturally with high inflation.

Okandan said: “Turn your face to the North and look at what those who are the main cause of inflation are doing in their own country. Even if you say, ‘But they have a banknote printing house, we don’t,’ don’t hesitate to come out and tell the truth to this community.”

The proposal by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides for a package of Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) is “a step in the right direction”, said Germany’s ambassador to Cyprus, Anke Schlimm.

In an interview to CNA, Schlimm reiterated that a two-state solution is not acceptable and that Germany remains committed to a federal solution for Cyprus.

In his last report to the Security Council, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to work together on confidence-building measures, noting that mechanisms of dialogue and rapprochement “can, in the absence of fully-fledged negotiations rekindle hope.”

Kasoulides presented a package of CBMs to the EU and international partners, including proposals to return Varosha, the fenced off part of Famagusta, to inhabitants under UN administration, along with operation of the airport and port in the north.

“We hope that Turkey and the Turkish-Cypriot community will respond in an open and constructive way to the recent initiative by the Republic of Cyprus,” Schlimm said.

Asked about developments in Varosha, the ambassador said the solidarity of the European Union and Germany with Cyprus is “beyond question” and that Turkish actions in the fenced off area “remain unacceptable.”

She reiterated that the EU and the UN Security Council have condemned the change of status in Varosha as running contrary to all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, while Turkey has been called upon to reverse and avoid any further unilateral actions.

Asked about the pressure on Cyprus, due to migration, the ambassador said she shares the concern on rising numbers of irregular arrivals to the island and welcomes the cooperation of Cyprus with the EU Commission in this context.

“Germany has offered concrete support to Cyprus and initiated joint task forces on migration as a gesture of solidarity. The basis for this is a bilateral action plan (Joint Action Plan on Migration Management between Germany and Cyprus) that was agreed at the end of December 2020. The action plan provides, among other things, German support for the return of rejected asylum applicants to their country of origin,” Schlimm said.

At the same time as the general population is benefitting from the lifting of most Covid restrictions, we read that elderly people continue to be virtual prisoners in care homes with no indication that they too will be given a respite.

Summer may be coming but autumn and winter will not be far behind when all of the Covid precautions are likely to resurface, especially for the elderly. But unlike the rest of us, it looks like they will not be allowed to enjoy a few months of freedom even though for many of them, due to their age, it could even be their last summer on this earth.

Instead, they will remain cut off from the outside world without any apparent show of mercy from the Covid Gestapo. These are the people in authority who told them life would go back to normal once they were vaccinated. Most have been vaccinated and some even had Covid on top and are likely already immune, but no exceptions are being made.

Government advisor Petros Karayiannis said any relaxations would depend on the further improvement of the epidemiological picture and the number of coronavirus hospitalisations. Funny how we all thought the indicators were fine, hence the lifting of most measures. Last Friday’s hospitalisations clocked in at a mere 45 people.

Justifying the remaining restrictions, Karayiannis said nursing homes were the most vulnerable spaces because all residents are elderly. These are weasel words from someone who does not have to live in a care home and has not had his freedom taken away.

There are two facts in life right now. Covid is not going away, ever, and there will always be elderly people who can catch it so can we deduce from the professor’s comments that people in care-homes will be isolated forever? If not, what is the metric for lifting this isolation?

17/05/2022

Foreign Minister in south cyprus Ioannis Kasoulides underlined the need to speed up the enlargement process in order to avert the Western Balkans becoming vulnerable to the influence of third countries such as Russia, China and Turkey.

He was speaking during a discussion with the Foreign Ministers of the countries concerned, in the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council held in Brussels on Monday.

In particular, according to a Foreign Ministry statement, Kasoulides stressed that the political instability caused by the crisis in Ukraine, combined with the growing influence of third countries in the Western Balkans, should cause particular concern.

The EU, he said, “must accelerate the enlargement process and support our partners in the Western Balkans in order to preserve its own credibility and avoid making the region more vulnerable to the influence of third countries such as Russia, China and Turkey,” according to the Foreign Ministry statement.

The Foreign Ministers of the EU exchanged views on the Western Balkans and examined ways to strengthen EU political engagement in individual sectors. They also took part in a working lunch with their counterparts from Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania.

They also reviewed the latest developments in Ukraine in the light of the ongoing Russian invasion in the presence of the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and Canada.

Prior to the beginning of the FAC, the EU’s Foreign Ministers participated in an EU – Canada ministerial meeting in the presence of Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly.

During the EU – Canada ministerial meeting, Kasoulides said that the reshaping of the security architecture in Europe is of vital importance and that Cyprus supports the strengthening of EU – NATO cooperation in a way that is mutually beneficial, based on the principles of reciprocity and autonomy of decision-making.

14/05/2022

Madrid and Rabat will on May 17 reopen the border posts between northern Morocco and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, which have been closed for more than two years, the Spanish Interior Minister announced on Thursday.

"There is an agreement between (...) the governments of Spain and Morocco that the borders of Ceuta and Melilla, the land borders, will open on 17 May at 00:00, that is to say, on Monday night", said Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

This process will be gradual and will initially only affect nationals of Schengen countries, the minister told journalists in Madrid.

Land borders

This reopening will then be extended "from 31 May" to "all cross-border workers", i.e. Moroccan nationals who work in these two cities, he continued.

Ceuta and Melilla are the European Union's only land borders with the African continent.

The head of Spanish diplomacy**, José Manuel Albares**, had announced on Wednesday evening a "definitive agreement" with the Moroccan authorities for a reopening "in the next few days" of the borders of Ceuta and Melilla with Morocco.

Diplomatic crisis

They had been closed during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, in the spring of 2020, then kept closed the following year due to a serious diplomatic crisis between Madrid and Rabat.

The agreement on their reopening comes after Madrid ended nearly a year-long diplomatic crisis with Rabat on 18 March by publicly supporting the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony controlled by Morocco, but for which the Sahrawi independence fighters of the Polisario Front, supported by Algeria, claim self-determination.

Border controls

The quarrel between Rabat and Madrid was caused by the reception in Spain of the Polisario leader, Brahim Ghali, who was admitted to a Spanish hospital in April 2021 for treatment of Covid-19.

It had led to the arrival in Ceuta in May 2021 of more than 10 000 migrants in 24 hours, thanks to a relaxation of border controls on the Moroccan side.

Cocoa has been Ghana's main commercial crop for several decades. And although the West African country is the second largest cocoa producer and exporter in the world, some are still looking into different ways to exploit it. Such as Dr Harrison Adjimah who uses cocoa and other local raw materials in his wines.

The senior lecturer conducts an entrepreneurship programme to encourage students to be innovative which allows him to demonstrates the potential of value addition to local raw materials.

"We were looking for ways to prove to the students that it is possible to develop premium products from our local resources. So, the idea of making wine from cocoa became quite appealing, explainsHarrison Adjimah founder of Volta Winery.

**In addition to cocoa, cashew and coffee beans are processed into refined red and white wines and juice.
**

"What is so clear is that there are aspects of things in the cocoa that we are not using for anything. For example, if you are making wine from cocoa, the cocoa bean is there you can still export it. We are spanning the cocoa industry, and am proud to part of that push as well", says Adjimah.

Besides making sweet wines, the senior lecturer uses his branding and packaging power to attract more clients. Volta Winery aspires to become the premium cocoa, coffee and cashew winemaker in Ghana using the standard wine production steps.

Real Madrid battled back from the brink of elimination to overcome Manchester City and book its place in the Champions League final.

For the third knockout tie in a row, Real looked down and out. Though this is a team that has become accustomed to improbable heroics, even by its own absurd standards Wednesday's late, late show to secure a 3-1 victory over City was cutting it fine.
With City leading 4-3 from the first leg, Riyad Mahrez's second-half goal had seemingly booked his team passage through to the final in Paris.
However, two goals either side of the 90-minute mark from substitute Rodrygo turned the game on its head and sent the match to extra time.
In truth, it then felt as though there was going to be only one winner.
Just three minutes into extra time, Karim Benzema -- who had been rather anonymous all game by his own high standards -- was fouled by Ruben Dias inside the box and made no mistake dispatching the penalty. That goal secured Real's 6-5 aggregate victory.
No matter how deep of a hole Real seems to find itself in, the magic inside the Bernabeu always seems to pull the team out.
For three successive rounds, Carlo Ancelotti's side has been on the verge of elimination. Now, somehow, it finds itself with a chance to win a record-extending 14th title when it takes on Liverpool in Paris' Stade de France on May 28.
It will be the fifth time Ancelotti has reached the Champions League final as a manager, the only man to have ever achieved that feat.

22/04/2022

According to the news on BRT English, the Office of the President said on Tuesday that the Greek Cypriot police refrained from filing cases against perpetrators identified by the families of Turkish Cypriot missing persons.

According to a statement issued by the President’s Office, President Ersin Tatar informed members of the UN’s Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances visiting the island that the majority of missing Turkish Cypriots had been abducted or forcefully taken by Greek Cypriot police or militia from their workplaces, hospitals and homes between 1963 and 1974.

It said that Tatar had also told them that more Turkish Cypriots had gone missing in 1974 while almost all Greek Cypriot missing persons were made up of Greek Cypriot soldiers.

The statement added that the reason why the mass grave at Atlılar had still not been opened by the Committee on Missing Persons was because of the preventative efforts of the Greek Cypriot side.

The Office of the President said that the working group in its first findings published on April 12 had called for faster progress to fulfil the rights of the relatives of the missing and to “depoliticise the issue of missing persons in Cyprus and genuinely treat it as a human rights and humanitarian issue,”

The statement expressed the hope that the report to be prepared by the group and presented by the UN Human Rights Council will contribute to encouraging the Greek Cypriot side to fulfil its responsibilities concerning Turkish Cypriot missing persons.

It also said that the Turkish Cypriot side had reiterated its readiness with all its institutions to launch work on undocumented migrants.

The Russian embassy in Cyprus has rejected unfounded news reports suggesting that Moscow was mulling establishing a consulate in Northern Cyprus.

“We would like to emphasise the recent rumours, published in the Greek online news agency Pronews.GR and in the newspaper Kathimerini, about the alleged establishment of a Russian consulate mission in the occupied territories and some journalists’ speculations, based on these rumours, about the recognition of the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ by Russia, are untrue”, the Russian embassy said in a statement.

“Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” is only recognised by Turkey but following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there has been speculation in Athens and Nicosia that Moscow may have changed its position on the issue.

The issue was recently raised when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov did not use the prefix “so-called” before the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” in a speech on two occasions, the Euractiv website reported.

The Russian embassy in Brussels made it clear that Moscow had not changed its position.

“One should not look for the black cat in a dark room, especially if it isn’t there,” the embassy said.

22/04/2022

As previously noted, the coalition government handed in its resignation to President Ersin Tatar on Wednesday after a split between Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu and his Finance Minister Sunat Atun. Sucuoğlu on Tuesday had conveyed his request to Tatar to remove Atun from the cabinet. The president in return had asked for time to evaluate the issue. In the afternoon, Sucuoğlu revisited Tatar, this time handing in his resignation which was accepted the next day.

The Leader of the People’s Party (HP) Kudret Özersay made evaluations to BRT after President Ersin Tatar accepted the government’s resignation.

He said that the latest developments were not the result of a disagreement between the coalition partners but of problems within the UBP itself.

Noting that the country’s economy was damaged, Özersay suggested a communal consensus with the participation of the five political parties in parliament.

Pointing out that the country should be governed with a joint understanding, he said that the HP was ready to discuss all possible alternatives.

On Sunday Kathimerini newspaper claimed that Russia intends to open a consulate in the TRNC.

Reminding that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had mentioned the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” in a statement he made in the past months, the newspaper wrote that this situation caused significant desperation in the Greek Cypriot Administration with bilateral relations with Russia in the background.

The newspaper stated that a new dimension that seems to be related to Russia’s approach in the Eastern Mediterranean is Moscow’s decision to open a Russian consulate in Northern Cyprus.
